After 5 weeks the DS was only ahead of the GBA by about 130K. A few weeks later and the GBA was ahead again.

I think you mistook me for someone arguing that Nintendo was talking about sold-to-consumers numbers rather than shipped. I wasn't. I said the DS has already sold 5 million pieces of hardware, and that it is the fastest gaming hardware unit to do so in Japan.sonycowboy said:But, Iwata said 5.44M right? Although, if thye've only shipped 5.44M, the shelves would be bare, as you've got to have ~some units in transit (from production facilities and/or distributors/retailers warehouses). In any case, the DS is doing spectacularly.
I'd have absolutely little problem believing this number and ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to argue about it as it's so close to reality and DS is so far ahead of the competition in Japan, what's the point??

1) the major sofmap has decided that the best place to hide all the DS stuff to slowdown sales is on the 3rd floor, whilst giving the PSP a big chunk of the 1st floor! cunning way to try and reduce stocks!
2) there simply aren't many DS's available.
3) Ouendan was bargin bucketted everywhere on saturday - and now they are all gone.

5,440,000 shipped, and "over 5,000,000" sold.Babelfish said:From sale the shipment quantity records 544 ten thousand units in 1 year 3 week, exceeding 500 ten thousand units regarding the number of actual sales.
Yet it's still selling at a pace to outsell the PSP 2:1.Agent Icebeezy said:Wait, you mean that a store is going out of their way to thwart DS sales? :lol :lol

it looks like it's 5.1-5.2 million, which would put dec 19-25 sales around 500k!CVXFREAK said:It's a little under 5.44 million though.
I think Sony is essentially buying the best shelf space though. It's the same at Bic, Tsutaya, Sakuraya etc. DS games are always tucked away in the corner while PSP games are the first things you see.DCharlie said:1) the major sofmap has decided that the best place to hide all the DS stuff to slowdown sales is on the 3rd floor, whilst giving the PSP a big chunk of the 1st floor! cunning way to try and reduce stocks!

Media Create is teh biasedLaguna said:GAF am Cry? NDS too succesful for GAF people that they can´t believe Media Crate?
malek4980 said:That means there's only 200 to 300 thousand DS's in the stores. How will they meet demand?
GhaleonEB said:I assume by continuing to produce units. That 200-300k is a snapshot, I'm sure in order to do the volumes they are Nintendo is cranking them out and refreshing the supply chain often.
malek4980 said:To be honest I am shocked they were able to meet demand up to this point. How did they forsee having the fastest selling system in Japanese history.
Jonnyram said:Nintendo knows exactly how many they've shipped, but for true sales, they only have the same data we have, i.e. Media Create, Enterbrain, MediaWorks, Oricon and other research companies. They don't do their own sales tracking.
Jonnyram said:Here's some food for thought. I can walk into nearly any game shop in Japan and buy a new copy of Super Mario Advance. Some of the shops have more than one copy in stock. Do you seriously think the shipment numbers are closer to the sales numbers than a game like Shadow of the Colossus, which is out of stock in many stores already?
Jonnyram said:They don't actually ship games unless retailers order them, so the risk is with the retailer, not Nintendo. Part of the thinking behind DS's new cart format, though, is to make orders quicker to turnaround, so if retailers are bearish and order few copies, but the game turns out to be ultra-popular, a new batch can be up and running quickly.
Jonnyram said:Because Gentle Brain Flexing sold less than Brain Training perhaps? Also, Brain Training 2 has been misappropriately labelled a sequel by you and others. It's a separate title and is unlikely to eat into sales of the original title. The training is more kanji-based.
Jonnyram said:Researchers don't have perfect numbers, but it is also true that Brain Training is a well-stocked game, nationwide, because of its long legs. It's also sold in non-game stores because of its massive appeal. It's not totally unfeasible that there may be a couple hundred thousand copies in stores right now, esp. considering the game sells 50k a week.
Jonnyram said:There's something wrong there, but I don't know if it's with the sales researchers or Capcom's figures.
Jonnyram said:Perhaps the PStwo bundle doesn't count towards software sales for Media Create and co., but Sony counts the production numbers at their side?
They're the best we have in terms of actual sales, though, and your crusade to prove otherwise is generally overzealous and underachieving.
They didn't. They just ramped up production as demand increased.malek4980 said:To be honest I am shocked they were able to meet demand up to this point. How did they forsee having the fastest selling system in Japanese history.
