Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba and National Diet members slam Ubisoft over Assassin’s Creed Shadows cultural disrespect

In Japanese games like SMT, you kill christian angels and literally fight mother of christ as boss fight.....come on.
Didn't they used to censor this stuff for the western releases though?
Even games as recent as Xenoblade 2 change words like God and stuff for the English release likely to not offend any one.

Not in SMT, in fact in SMTV you can fight Maria (mother of christ) as optional boss.

I love that, I want Atlus have that freedom to make the game however they want but freedom works both ways, other devs also should be free make their own games however they want.

Sounds fun. She was known for her prowess in battle.

My Japanese isn't good, but I heard him say "Yurusanai" and if I’m not mistaken, that’s basically the anime way of saying: somebody is about to have a very bad day.

Ubi telling their people not to go onto social media. Japanese Government just obliterates UBI.

What a crazy turn. They should not have gone down the Yasuke road.

Yeah, a Japanese youtuber.

As a westerner I would have no idea about the Dragons and the differences, but this guy pointing it out makes me think UBI just did a western interpretation of Japan, and not a Japanese understanding of their culture.

I have zero interest in Shadows but the whole grift desperately trying to portray it as offensive is silly.
If you don't like it don't buy it, that's what I'm doing.

Japan can fuck right off.

And miss those 40k sales Assassin Creed gets there with every new entry? No way!

Japan protects their own beliefs, it's up for the US government (or the Vatican) to complain about being able to fight a Biblic figure.

Ubisoft just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Quebec where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Assassin's Creed Shadows for PC, Xbox and PS5 systems, nor will they purchase any of Ubisoft's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Ubisoft has alienated an entire market with this move.
Ubisoft, publicly apologize and patch Assassin's Creed Shadows or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Even if this game succeeds it's over for Ubisoft at their current size in this racket. They know that the gaming community has been successfully polarized against them. They will not, nay, cannot go unwoke. It is part of their culture now. The best thing they can do now is divest. Even if Shadows is a mild success the writing is on the wall. Any success it does see will be blunted. They cannot make good games because again, it is part of their culture. They are stuck. They cannot change and would not know where to start and would not want to start. It's not gonna happen. They can't continue to exist living game to game, paycheck to paycheck. Eventually a big one will flop again, it's only a matter of time. The only reason they want mild success with Shadows imho, is to up the value of the IP before they sell it. The damage has been done and one 80 game is not gonna change anything. The writing is on the wall. It's like in Major League, when you get excited because your hero hit a double you know it's time to retire.

I love that these two posts sound like a single one when read back to back.

Everyone should be respectfull to others. A person's freedom ends where another man's freedom begins. You insult people, you get your ass handed to you, and they will be absolutely right.
If someone doesn't care about culture doesn't mean other don't.

So if I'm stronger than you, I can insult you and if you try to beat me up I'll kick your ass on top of insulting you?

That can't be a prescription for how society should work... If someone insults you, you can insult them back or take the high road and let them look trashy. You don't get to put your hands on them.

Or are you saying your feelings getting hurt is worse than being physically attacked, in which case that would make you a snowflake wouldn't it?

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Considering that Yasuke is well known in Japan and there was a children's book about him written by a Japanese man named Yoshio Kurusuru, I think they know about Yasuke.
Does he also bang Nobunaga's sister in the children's book? Asking for a friend...

Maybe prosecute the people climbing shrines than content in a freaking video game.

By the logic entire Western world would ban Japan for presenting underaged girls everywhere.

See this, Japanese politicians? High time you apologize for you egregious war crimes. Thanks in advance, you hypocritical bastards.
But I guess you're all too busy fucking comfort women in-between complaining about video games.

PS: fuck your shrines. You can shove them where you shit from.
I don't think the Japanese ever apologised or acknowledged Unit 731?

So many white westerner loser incel chuds are still pretending to be Japanese to shit on this game.

When will people catch on it's all trolls complaining cause they are racists?

Stand Strong Ubisoft! We ain't falling for their tricks either.

Sue these faking assholes

You've got to hand it to them. It must have taken a lot of dedication for these western trolls to infiltrate and overtake the highest offices of Japanese government and religion. They're a sneaky bunch.

When my wife and I visited Pearl Harbor over 15 years ago, you are told to be silent as you stand above the USS Arizona. Well guess who would not shut up as they took selfies? Japanese tourists. If I ever visit Japan, why should I follow their customs and traditions? They clearly do not care about anyone else's.

Kada then pointed out the risk of the game encouraging real-world vandalism, noting that:

• Some tourists have climbed shrine torii gates and committed graffiti.
• This kind of cultural disrespect is unacceptable.

In response, Vice Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Ōgushi stated that unauthorized use of real-world locations is unacceptable.

Ubisoft, you have dishonored yourself and your Clan. 😔😔

To atone for such a disrespect, you must climb a pile of thrash and commit graffiti. 🫵🏻🤨

Thus has spoken the People of Nippon. 🙏🏻😑🇯🇵

Yep my country got raped by the Kempeitai, bamboo sticks up fingernails, public beheadings the lot. And guess what, they never officially apologise. So yeah, spare me the cutural sensitivity bullshit.

And than it escalates as I would bring crowd of similary minded people to beat you up
It goes until the body with highest power of violence (i.e. government) step in and declare rules what is allowed and what is not

And normally regulated society is one that try to minimize insults, especially insults leading to violence escalation - this is how society should work and not snowflake entitlement "I insult whomever I want, you shouldnt be allowed to kick my ass for that"

Be mindful, don't insult others even in ignorance, don't put yourself or your values above others - and things naturally be good. It's how adults behave.

I like this.

This thread is exposing people nicely. Anybody talking about Yasuke clearly did not read the OP and has exposed themselves.

Good luck editing your messages now.

I am trying to reconcile my delight with Ubisoft getting raked over the coals for Shadows in 2025 and my previous conviction that Las Vegas officials could fuck all the way off with their complaining about R6: Vegas in 2006...

The biggest difference is that Ubi was a fun company that made cool games in 2006. In 2025, not so much.

A pretty stupid thing to be complaint about, IMO. Also, worried about encouraging people to vandalize the shrines? If they really thought video games cause that kind of behaviour, vandalizing shrines would be the last thing to be worried about considering all the shit that is depicted in Japanese games.

I mean, it's like saying Arsenal Gear crashing into Manhattan would prompt terrorism or saying Steven Armstrong's portrayal in Metal Gear is offensive to Senators in the US.

I don't care about this game but these arguments are pretty stupid. As if they weren't lots of more important issues that require their attention.
