JonTron Releases a Statement

Funhaus coverage of this whole incident was utterly awful. They speak as if there is a discussion needed on what JonTron says. The guy is arguing that one race is vastly greater and more well-mannered than any other race. There is no debate or discussion needed. JonTron's views are completely ignorant and just quite frankly idiotic.

Boogie did more of this childly naive "why can't we all just be friends" kind of thing.

Can we please not ignore tons of the guys tweets and posts over the years to keep him comfortably looking "childly naive"?

But yeah, this is about Jontron, not him.

Subscribers are up, views are up, revenue is up...if you're a youtuber then being publicly racist seems like a very good business decision.

Complacency is terrifying. I'm sure the majority of these people would say "I don't care what he believes, his content is great!" Complaceny IS support of those beliefs, complacency is raising him up and giving him more of a platform to spread his disgusting opinions all the more.

Saying "I care about the content and not the person behind it" is simply ignorant.

I have two friends who like Jontron. One is very dissapointed the other said he would continue watching but use Adblock

I think it's fine. There's nothing really to be discussed anymore regarding it until he says anything new. People on the subreddit already shitted on him A LOT. We can clearly see where he stands politically, and whoever thinks this is a reason to unsubscribe already did, and the same for who didn't.

The subreddit was receiving much more movement than the usual, and lots of discussions from users that never followed JonTron, mods are only used to users shitposting... it was probably a pretty bad time for them lol. Long time Jontron subscribers where being downvoted for calling out Jon on his bullshit by people from The_Donald and Kotaku in Action, and I believe they didn't have any other solution to it (other than just shutting down the subreddit, of course).

Yo chums,

Your boi Jimothy Sterling dropped an article on Jontron being a smelly racist

http://www.thejimquisition.com/youtubers-say-the-darndest-things/

This is a good article that shows how dumb it is that some youtubers want to act like the world is against them and "they just misunderstood me and I'm a nice guy except when I'm not" PDP controversy was from idiocy where someone having the most subscribers should know more about this shit but Jon is undefendable
expect for those gaffers who would get banned defending a white supremacist
. They really live in a bubble where they think whatever they do and say doesn't matter because "their people to and we need to sperate the art from the artist". It's just like with Tmartin with his shady gambling where he weaseled his way out with his goddam dog to try to get sympathy.

Yikes. I don't really follow YouTube celebrities (unless Retsupurae counts I guess, but I haven't kept up with them either recently) so I'm mostly familiar with Boogie through his posts in the Gamergate thread way back when. Struck me as a generally well-meaning guy who was standing with non-well-meaning guys because of naivity and emotional instability.

I'm vaguely aware that he's kept up allegience with Gamergate folk, but has he been spreading a lot off this stuff himself? I'm honestly wondering if he was just doing an innocent act back then or if he's absorbed these ideas by being around these people.

I think Ender's Game fans have a good stance. Enjoy the content, but fully acknowledge that the creator is horrible. But I've heard that sometimes JonTron's content involves repeatedly throwing out ethnic slurs and such nonsense so I don't know if that's possible here.

Jesus fucking christ, this article.

I admit, I am VERY easily swayed. After listening to the TB podcast about this, I came here saying that witchhunts do not mean shit. Now, after reading this, there is one angle I failed to consider: the amount of influence JonTron (and PewDiePie and others) actually have.

I owe GAF an apology, tbh. When it comes to politics, it was obvious that there is something bad about politicians like Trump ENABLING racists all around the globe (happens in Hungary too :( ), but that angle I forgot with youtube stars. But its true nontheless.

The mods refused to denounce his racism in the name of professionalism.... come on.

Curious I'm not trying to insult you or anything but did you watch the debate Jon had. Because the shit he says is fucking jaw droppingly racist. "Dilute the gene pool" "richest blacks commit more crime than the poorest whites because of Africa". No video about the "big scary" media will ever convince me otherwise.

Whats even more depressing is that his views on immigration are pretty much the way my country (Denmark) does Its immigration policy.

This is how the immigration minister celebrated that we now have 50 laws making it more difficult for immigrants in Denmark...

It's weird, right. These Youtubers demand to be taken seriously, so news outlets start covering them. But once there is a story that paints them in a bad light, they bring on the persecution complex. What is it, do you want news outlets to take you seriously and report on your doings or do you really just want fluff pieces?

I think Ender's Game fans have a good stance. Enjoy the content, but fully acknowledge that the creator is horrible.

This is one of those cases where ignorance is bliss. Sometimes I'm happy not knowing how horrible some of my favorite content creators are.

But... ugh... what did Orson Scott Card do now? Do I want to know?

What I find interesting about Jim's article is that he calls out Totalbiscuit (good) but on the podquisition last week he said he wasn't going to condemn him when people asked him about it. Huh.

You can read a book from a library without paying for it or supporting the initial creator. Watching jons content, giving his videos views, subscribing to him, all means of support that will benefit him.

Obama was a hitler like demagogue, Gays are not equal citizens, "Violently" opposes same sex marriage. Being gay is a just a front for being a pedophile...

You know....normal republican bullshit.

I hope Jim's article refocuses the debate on the fact that JonTron is a guy with >3 million people notionally following him and consuming his content. This isn't about some rando who made a shitty comment on Twitter this is a significant entertainer with a young following so yeah pillorying him for being a racist asshole is wholly justified.

TB and Boogie are just being TB and Boogie, the whole GG thing told you everything you needed to know about them if you were willing to listen, freeze peaches and "can't we all be friends (with misogynists/racists/people who hate you and actively wish you dead)".

Yea, that shit is obscene. Met her IRL though my job, a really nice, charming person. Dont know what the fuck she's thinking politically though. I suppose someone thought there'd be voters in this stunt.

That's a good point. I'm wondering if it would be possible for someone to take JonTron's videos and host them somewhere else with no advertising revenue for that purpose. I guess you couldn't do it on YouTube itself without getting a strike of some kind?

Reposting jons videos anywhere would be violation of copyright. But really though, I'm not sure how anyone could stomach him enough to want to do that anyway.

The mods refused to denounce his racism in the name of professionalism.... come on.

That part is a problem. I was talking about the decision of banning political discussion.

And I also kinda see the point in not standing for or against Jon in a public way. The subreddit is light hearted and dedicated to shitposting, mods usually don't give their opinions on stuff unless it's a political subreddit. It's a problem, but I can see why they're doing it.

Pretty much. OSC has shown his ass recently and for years now.

In 2008, Card lamented that he had for so long been labeled a "homophobe" because of his stated positions on homosexuality. Here's a run-down on what he said. Notably, he's become far more vocal and politically active in the fight against gay marriage in recent years.

1990: Card argued that states should keep sodomy laws on the books in order to punish unruly gays–presumably implying that the fear of breaking the law ought to keep most gay men in the closet where they belonged.

2004: He claimed that most homosexuals are the self-loathing victims of child abuse, who became gay "through a disturbing seduction or rape or molestation or abuse."

2008: In 2008, Card published his most controversial anti-gay screed yet, in the Mormon Times, where he argued that gay marriage "marks the end of democracy in America," that homosexuality was a "tragic genetic mixup," and that allowing courts to redefine marriage was a slippery slope towards total homosexual political rule and the classifying of anyone who disagreed as "mentally ill:"

In an essay titled "Unlikely Events" published on his personal blog in May (it wasn't noticed until this week, probably because who the fuck reads Orson Scott Card's personal blog?), Card predicted a future where President Obama has turned into a Hitler-like dictator who uses street gangs to pacify the citizenry before placing his wife Michelle on the throne of the United States. He calls this essay a "silly thought experiment," which is nice, because it means that he at least knows that what he's written is completely fucking stupid.

Before getting into the Glenn Beck-esque, masochistic fantasy he's constructed for himself, he claims that Barack Obama "hates the very idea of compromise; he demonizes his critics." This is in preamble to a screed in which the author demonizes someone he doesn't agree with.

If you wondering when all of this stops being just crazy, but also becomes racist, look no further than the following passage:

"Having been anointed from the start of his career because he was that magical combination—a black man who talks like a white man (that's what they mean by calling him "articulate" and a "great speaker")—he has never had to work for a living, and he has never had to struggle to accomplish goals. He despises ordinary people, is hostile to any religion that doesn't have Obama as its deity, and his contempt for the military is complete."

There's a wealth more of Card's nonsense in the links.

Well so do I but I believe the reason is a lot more about protecting JonTrons brand than it is about keeping things "light hearted" in a subreddit we now know is dedicated to a white supremacist.

You mean besides being a open raging homophobe for decades and part of an anti gay marriage board?

Not much, I guess.

I mean, who am I to judge people's taste in comedy? Some people in this thread and the last are fans who are disappointed when they learned JonTron's views, so it would be nice if there was some means for them able to continuing enjoy the comedy without supporting him.

Or you could unsub and move on with your life because no youtuber is that great as to begrudingly consume their content, especially one like JonTron who barely uploads ANY VIDEOS anymore and the ones he does upload are completely rudderless random topics or shitty sponsored content

sounds a little too hard
