Luigi's Mansion 2: Dark Moon Review Thread

I dunno, the comment about the "ghosts not having a backstory" seems about as relevant as "I didn't like the color of the stairs".

Maybe to you, but it's something I enjoyed from the previous game.
There are users here who said the new game does have some little story bits like the original so I'll be happy with that.

It was part of the charm that I loved with the original.
If it was a straight up arcade game I know I wouldn't enjoy it as much so I appreciate any story/puzzle touches added.

The first thing I noticed about Polygon's review was the incredibly lazy use of this graphic :lol

I don't have a 3DS but really, really, really want this game :(

I LOVED Luigi's Mansion on GCN (one of the best games on the system for me), and this is better according to most reviews.

But I do not want to buy a 3DS :( Daaammmnnnn

I thought the Polygon review articulated pretty well what problems the reviewer had with the game.
Mission structure, lack of uniqueness to the ghosts, more focus on action, and the difficulty of playing online because of a lack of voice chat.

He did compare it to the original, but it is a sequel and he saw most of the changes as a step back.

I don't really understand the relevance of Brad's quote in this case, please explain (perhaps I'm missing something.)
Sounds like the Polygon editor liked the game, but that small part about getting to know the ghosts kept what normally would have been a 9 or higher, a 7 instead. I agree that it's too minor of a thing to subtract that much of a score (compared to everyone else's review scores), but that quote from an actual reviewer is saying that this is just the way it should be.

haha, not to pick on you or anything but these kinds of posts always amuse me. I just imagine corporate big wig (in this case, miyamoto/iwata) rapping their fingers together and muttering "all according to plan...muahaha"

Why are you assuming he would have given it a 9 because of just the ghost personality thing?
He had more issues with the game as Hoju nicely posted above, but liked it overall as you said.

7/10 is not bad score anyway.

Every review so far has been very positive. Including Polygon.
This is what everyone should be celebrating.

Well, guys, I just don't think it's worth it to pay so much money to play one game. I'd buy Luigi's Mansion and EAD's 3D Mario, but after finishing those games it's not likely I'd ever touch the 3DS again. I'm just not a handheld person.

Oh, why oh why can't I just download and play those games on the Wii U :( :(

I think the SimCity review debacle has pretty much destroyed what little reputation Polygon had built itself. They went from a 9.5 to an 8 to a 4. I mean jesus christ.

Even without the server issues, there is just no way SimCity is a 9.5

I can't take their opinions seriously, especially when they sit rock bottom, 10 points south of the next review for Luigi's Mansion. The whole operation just smacks of videogame hipsterdom.

$150 3DS XL (at Toys 'R Us) + $40 Luigi's Mansion 2 + FREE Super Mario 3D Land = $190 (for what is a $280 value).

You're saving $90, on a fantastic system with two classic console-grade experiences you can take wherever you go.

Do it, klier!

You guys are trying to convince someone who doesn't like handhelds and would only play this one game to buy the system? ;)

It is a great deal though, if you liked the software.

go for it, the 3ds XL will be $150 on Sunday (Target I believe), probably the best time to pick one up along with this game. Register both and you'll get another free game also!

Damn. Only $150 for the 3DS this weekend? Is that only on Sunday? I wanted to download Luigi's Mansion on Saturday, but if that makes it tricky for me to get the free game, I may hold off.

He said he wants LM2 and SM3DL. I'm sure he'd love those games, and once he realizes these are incredibly immersive console-grade experiences where the fact you're playing a portable fades away, he'd be hooked and start discovering the rest of the 3DS portfolio, which is some of Nintendo's best output in years.

Well you don't have the get the XL just on Sunday (the deal runs this Sunday til the following Saturday). I'm seeing people in the CAG thread I linked buying their XLs this week and then planning to go back to Target and get their price matched down to $160. The Free game comes from both registering your 3dsxl and registering Luigi's Mansion, so you could technically buy a xl today, dl LM from the store Saturday night, then get a pricematch on Sunday and register both games so you'll qualify for the free game promotion

Joystiq: 3.5/5
Richard Mitchell said:
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is a bit like Luigi himself: charming, goofy and utterly affable. The core mechanic of catching ghosts is solid and exciting, and the environments are absolutely worth seeing and exploring. It's got heart, but after trudging through all five of its locales, you may wind up feeling a little like a bedraggled, battle-worn ghostbuster yourself.

Polygon seems a little out in the wilderness on this one... universally loved by everyone except Polygon lol. There's always one sour patch in the bunch

I think it's pretty healthy to see opinions from different point of views instead of having just a giant hivemind of everyone universally praising the game.

Fun coincidence(?): if I recall correctly, Polygon derived more writing staff from Joystiq than any other outlet, including the EIC.

I think he thinks he's accomplishing something by drawing attention to himself.

Not good news for a junior.

This game reviewed way better than expected, I'll pick it up when I get a chance. It's just unfortunate that Bioblock and Dire Emblem are close releases, as naturally they take huge priority.

Exactly.
Though he didn't even trash the game or give it a poor score which is even more bewildering.
Out in the wilderness, what?

Why? Don't want to spend the money or don't think it has enough to offer?
