Marathon will be a premium, paid - but not 'full price' - Extraction Shooter with 3 maps at launch

When Destiny launched, the market was much more open to this kind of games, even if they sucked. People have become more demanding and some stuff doesnt fly in the current market. Studios need to up their game to get people's interest.

I have the impression that Bungie believes the year is still 2010.
What kind of game?

Marathon is completely different to Destiny.

This is the first AAA PvP game with long-term progression.

Why do people not understand how big this is?

This is not a game from 2010. This is what every game from 2035 is going to look like.

PvP has evolved over the last 10 years, it used to be normal for box price games to thrive, but it's dominated by F2P live service games with strong monetisation hooks and long term content support. The gamers that support these types of games don't jump between titles as often as you might think, they're invested to those ecosystems like Valorant or Apex Legends, where progression, cosmetics and there communities are all very much integrated. So when Bungie announces Marathon with a box price in an attempt to capture a broad audience in a niche competitive genre, it's a risky outdated strategy in today's climate.

Agreed, but this game looks a lot more finshed than Destiny ever did.

Sure Jan GIF

You dont even have a clue which game is catching fire by tomorrow. No one knows that. These long term predictions are just wishful thinking in yr head. ;)

All the people who say this...every single one of them...have been unable to predict a single Live Service hit in the last 10 years.

They've never forecasted a single hit, but will tell you Marathon is in trouble with faux confidence.

Escape from Tarkov is $40
Hunt Showdown is $40
Helldivers 2 is $40

Marathon can't be $40? People went from wanting to pay for fun to not wanting to pay for fun that quickly? Human DNA has changed that much in the last 15 months? I think not.

If you look at many Live Service flops over the last 10 years, you'll see the majority of them launch with huge, short lived spikes.

That's because the Fortnite, CSGO, PUBG, and League of Legends players would rather give a new game a chance than play their 836th hour of the game they main.

It's only after they recognize inferior quality do they return to their main title.

Oof. I'm suprsied they didn't just stick with Destiny since as far as I can tell it's been a money maker. It has a HARDCORE fanbase that buys everything they put out and it still attracts the casual audience every time a new expansion is released. If they took their time and made a Destiny 3 with a more open/social world I think it would have been huge. I don't think Marathon will be anything special but what do I know. Prove me wrong I guess...

Top game: AAA PvP game with paper thin progression.
Bottom game: First AAA PvP game with real progression.

You can only appreciate graphical advancements because recognizing psychological, game design oriented advancements is more difficult.
Bloody hell I really did bring you back from the brink.

Welcome back on board :)

Nice cope. Marathon looks like ass while a game in 2010 featured better visuals with destructible environments which mind you, is a pretty cool game design oriented advancement in itself.

Trying to predict whether a live-service game will succeed in today's volatile market is always tricky. I'm not saying it's impossible to succeed with a box price, it's just riskier now, especially given how the broader PvP landscape has evolved. A box price is a barrier, and 'fun' alone isn't enough anymore. The game also needs to be accessible, addictive, and supported long-term. If you're charging $40 upfront, expectations are way higher at launch, and there's less room for it to grow over time. Games like Escape from Tarkov and Helldivers 2 found success, but their rollouts were unique and not easily replicated. Marathon can succeed, but it's a high-stakes play in a market where most similar attempts have bombed.

Tarkov is 52 euro for the cheapest version

This is Sony another attempt to make a cash grab service disguise as a game. It will be very carefully crafted to make people folk out their money for different kinds of "rewards, achievements, reputations and upgrades". influencers and media outlets will be paid to give this "Game" a glowing previews.
Gaming is fucked.
