On this note we might see an increasingly large portion of remaining console development go f2p as companies run out of games to remaster.
That's also ideal to align their games with a paying model vastly preferred in growing Asian markets.

Wondreful 101 sold almost ~3x more than S.T.E.A.M. in its launch week, despite Wii U having at the time ~1/18 of the 3DS install base nowdays.
Holy shit, this is a whole new level of bomba. Rabbids Land sales sound good now...
The last console game Atlus developed was released in 2011. The next one doesn't have a date yet. Wow, what a console powerhouse.
I didn't say they were. I said they will continue to develop.

I wonder if it will even have a big enough of a effect on the sales right now...
So this is what a dying market looks like - 20-30% YoY declines. Ugly stuff. And once Konami and Sega get MGS V and Persona 5 out and set sail for good there will be very little of significance coming to consoles from Japan beyond Nintendo and Square (both increasingly focussed on the west).
Even though this week in itself is obviously not significant, seeing such awful sales brings home how established the mobile transition really is. I really hope Nintendo do a good job with their next handheld.
Will there still be a console market in Japan that's worth their while in 2020 though?
I want to know this too. Never even heard of the game.Is it that bad?
It's a port of a remaster of two fourteen year old games everybody has already played, released on an unpopular console. Not that surprising in my opinion. And judging by the demo STEAM is just a plain bad game with an artstyle that doesn't appeal to a lot of people and especially not Japanese gamers.
Not the PS4.
Arent there only two versions?

Given the reaction in this thread I guess it's not surprising Codename STEAM bombed. People were apathetic or didn't know what to make of it given the art-style. Very sad because the game is really good. Hopefully this is one of those things that goes underground for a decade basted with cult love and retro gamers of the future rediscover it.
It's just a far worse Valkyria + X-Com wannabe with terrible art and boring ass mission design. Doubt anyone will care. Strategy fans will just remember the superior games which inspired this instead. Thank God Nintendo released a meaty demo, I'm sure it helped lots of people save their money.
It's pretty good actually in terms of gameplay. Only it's art style is the big minus since almost everybody does not like it.
15k for FFX? Looks like Japan is exhausted on remasters.

Here's me hoping VR comes sooner that later and it lights a fire or something :|
The next generation Japan will only get two consoles: Nintendo's NX and the PS5. The market will not disappear, but it will be centered towards the hardcore crowd in the case of Sony and kids in the case of Nintendo (20 millions both consoles combined?). Media Create threads will have less pages than the PAL threads.
PS4closure soon heading to less than 10k/week after the barrage of high profile games.
Good luck to Square Enix.
Seeing that Dragon Quest X for 3DS is in Famitsu Top 30, I wonder why Square didn't release the Version 3 for the system too lol
Holy shit Japan. MGS V and Persona 5 can't come soon enough.
Oh well, at least IS has Maids and Butlers ready for Fire Emblem If so they can recoup the losses incurred on Codename F.L.O.P.
Hopefully Codename S.T.E.A.M. or whatever new game they plan will have the art of Kozaki Yusuke
They're in a rather hard place.
For their flagship titles like FFXV and KH3, they really want them as PS4 games for the larger Western audience, but it does harm the Japanese audience.
For titles like Star Ocean, there isn't really a great fit anywhere, so they're sitting on what looks like the best option.
Does it really harm the Japanese audience though? Where else would they put it? We're talking about games coming out in 2016-2017. What platforms could FFXV and KH3 be released on in Japan which would assure higher sales in 2016-2017?
I doubt it will light a fire anywhere, but I'm in the minority.

I can't believe I missed the opportunity to say "Phones".

I think the best argument to be made would be that these shouldn't have been 2016-17 games in the first place. FFXV is famously and horribly delayed, and SE sat on the KH franchise (outside the handheld spinoffs, which do matter) for all of last generation for some reason.
But that bridge is burned now, so I guess the best option left to them is PS4.

I'm of the opinion that if VR "lights a fire," it will do so first and foremost with a non-gaming application. For instance, I suspect something like virtual tourism will be a greater draw than VR Elder Scrolls will be for mass adoption.
But as always, predictions are tough.
You just get those for free on the cloud versions, don't you?
It's just a digital cloud streaming client. I figured they just enabled the expansion material for everyone given that it's a colossal rip-off, is that not the case?
So long Japan, thanks for all the memories.
