Media Create Sales: Week 31, 2013 (Jul 29 - Aug 04)

It's the same thing that happened with Grasshopper's games. If the game fails on a Nintendo console, blame the fans, call them casuals. If it fails on Sony or Microsoft, they are a cursed niche developer or something.

Yeah, I don't want to stir it up too much, but I like how Shadows of the damned and now Killer is dead bomb and everything is fine and dandy, whereas when a game underperforms on a Nintendo platorm some take the occasion to argue that's the proof that third parties should bring their games elsewhere, double standard indeed.

You can't even pre-order it right now. The game is going to be sold-out until December. First week sales are going to be something crazy like 1 million physical and 1 million downloads.

Not available right now, Capcom is being careful with pre-orders.

When MH4 is available, it lasts for like a day or two. Just a few days ago Amazon was taking pre-orders for the game and bundles.

I don't think they're being careful. It's Capcom we're talking here, the kings of overshipping. If they could, they would have put 3 million copies of MH4 out there day one and retailers would buy them all. Conspiracy theory says they either want to sell downloads or Nintendo can't make enough carts.

I wonder what will the difference be in sales between Pokemon and MH4.

In my opinion both are equally big at this point (in Japan of course, MH is pretty much nothing in the west).

Not to mention that these two are relatively close to each other in release,3DS is seriously going to overkill the software sales.

When might we hear numbers for Pokemon pre-orders?

Black and White's million is certainly out of reach, but I'm interested in how the new features and style are galvanising interest.

Both theories hold almost equal credence. I wonder how long before it beats Tomodachi Collection's digital numbers (I guess between 45-100k) and challenge Animal Crossing.

I reckon Pokemon is going to sell shedloads in Japan, still I expect MH4 to be a 4+M hit and become the second or third best selling title on 3DS - Animal crossing is already moving towards 4M mark.

Wow at France, as far as I can recollecr Nintendo games for some reason are always better received than in the rest of Europe.

Conspiracy theory says they either want to sell downloads or Nintendo can't make enough carts.

Another way to put it is that lot of people is going to want to purchase digitally MH4, not differently from what has happened with Animal crossing new leaf, MN3U and Tomodatchi collection, it's the kind of game people want to bring with them everywhere so I expect sales would be affected regardless of any teoretical cart shortages.

Atelier Rorona, GE2, and Danganronpa holdin' it down for Vita, but god damn, Pokebombs gonna drop real hard. X/Y looks literally unstoppable.

Mmmh, so far we've seen clear improvements in W101's ranking in Japan, a sign that the Direct worked...and I know this is just a Japan sales thread, but I think it'd be interesting to look at how ND could affect preorders also outside Japan, for the sake of the comparison.

Japan: 274th --> 35th
UK: 236th --> 78th
Germany: 369th --> 133rd
US: 430th --> 163rd

France not included since there's no "Movers and Shakers" chart there.
It's 12th in Amazon Spain :D
http://www.amazon.es/gp/bestsellers/videogames/ref=sv_v_0

If Atelier Rorona remake on the Vita outsells the PS3 version (which I think will happen) the series should move to the Vita.

The same for NiS games and Disgaea.
Disgaea 5 would do great on Vita.

But on the other hand it would collide with the "up-port' strategy that PS3 version is the standard release and then later down the line an up-port comes on the Vita.

Wonder what will happen.

Yeah, exactly, I mean careful with how many pre-orders they can take.

And again, I just noticed MH4 will be released on a Saturday (2 days of sales), what the fuck. MHP3 was released on a Wednesday (5 days of sales).

I see you Capcom. No wonder it sold that much at launch.

Here's the list of all games that debuted selling over 2 million units:

Code:
[B][NDS] Pokémon Black / White (Pokémon Co.) {2010.09.18} - 2.637.285[/B]
[PSX] Final Fantasy VIII (Square) {1999.02.11} - 2.504.044
[NDS] Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky (Square Enix) {2009.07.11} - 2.343.440
[PS2] Dragon Quest VIII (Square Enix) {2004.11.27} - 2.236.881
[PSP] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom) {2010.12.01} - 2.146.467
[PSX] Final Fantasy VII (Square) {1997.01.31} - 2.034.879

Do we know how many PSX systems had been sold when Final Fantasy VII was released?

Let's put this in another way. If Wii U version came out in December and PS3 version now would there be big difference at sales?

I doubt things would be very different.

Why wouldn't they be? The Yakuza games are fairly popular in Japan, Yakuza 2 especially. It wouldn't have made much sense for the collection to appear on a nintendo platform and not a Sony platform but if it had come out on wii u first in december when software and hardware sales were much healthier, why wouldn't there be a difference in sales? And if the PS3 version came out now after over half a year of fans thinking they could only get it on wii u, considering it opened fairly soft to begin with, why is it so inconceivable to think it'd sell a bit less?

I'm not saying it would have done just as well on wii u as PS3 had their releases been reversed but there's an argument to be made that it could have made a difference. This is all conjecture though, so if you disagree, there's no hard evidence to disprove you. If ZombiU could sell 13k at launch though, why would a timed exclusive like Yakuza HD sell significantly less?

Yakuza games are quite controversial in Japan (rated CERO D).
I don't see Soccer Moms are buying Yakuza for their kids. As a matter of fact you must be last grade of high school or higher (must show your ID) to even purchase Yakuza game.

The 3DS has a very strong position from know till the end of the year. After that the only good move i see Nintendo doing is launching a redesign before the first half of 2014, that'll ensure a continuation of strong sales for the device coming to 2015.

He doesn't say that. And MHP3rd was sold out for weeks, they were selling what they could ship.

Not sure how you came to this conclusion since Pokemon Gen 1-5 never sold less than 5.33 mil in Japan while no MHP game ever sold over 5 mil before.

I'm more surprised Amazon had one hundred thousand units of anything. I'd think that would be more like their entire video game sales in one year.

Why is the Twitter still there https://twitter.com/AmazonJP/status/366200521603817474
but not on the Amazon's page: https://twitter.com/AmazonJP/

I wonder when Japan is going to become more interested in consoles again. Either with Smash 4, or FF XV, perhaps?

Not for Smash I fear, this one is getting a 3DS version too, it's going to eat into the Wii U's version sales big time (in Japan at least).

FF XV's effect depends on how damaged the brand is, we still have a long way to go before it releases and there's that shitty looking Lightning Returns game coming before.

Well, if by "become more interested" you mean have the consoles sell more than 10K a week, the current console owners eventually switching over to PS4/Wii U should do that as major titles continue to release and PS3 games start to dry up.

If by "become more interested" you mean generation over generation lifetime sales growth, I don't think it will actually happen for the foreseeable future.
