Meta Quest 3 | OT + Review Thread |

You keep acting like OLED is somehow issue-free, but the reality is that OLED has a lot of problems that are even more apparent in a VR application.
For one, OLED pixels are either ON or OFF, which means to get dark grays, OLEDs have to cycle the pixels on and off at a high rate of speed to fool your eyes into seeing gray rather than simply reducing the light for those pixels.
And this is a huge issue in VR, because it creates extremely noticable (and ugly) black-smear in dark scenes with a lot of motion which totally kills any immersion you gain from the higher contrast from the OLED. You also have mura issues that are typically much worse on OLEDs the higher you run the brightness in dark scenes. The Quest 1 had an OLED display, and the mura and black smear were dealbreakers for me. Can't stand it.
On top of that, the PSVR2 has the worst motion persistence out of any VR headset, which you can only work-around by....turning the brightness way down.

So, if a person absolutely cannot deal with black smear and image persistence, then LCD panels are the better alternative.
Metro Awakening is near unplayable on PSVR2 due to the mura, IMO at least. Not sure if that's because of OLED or whatever but that's the game that made me realize what mura is. I definitely noticed it in other games but it wasn't distracting, I just figured it was reprojection.

I plan on double dipping Metro on Q3s, I just assume the mura won't be there.

I've already mentioned mura, persistence, and the old "SPUD" software Oculus used to combat them by slightly elevating the black floor. They're not uniformly issues across every OLED headset model though, which suggests it's more of a quality control and R&D issue rather than a guaranteed limitation. They've varied wildly in severity across many headset models, with PSVR2 specifically being the clear worst WRT both mura and persistence--especially mura. They were not issues worth mentioning with the OG Vive and early model CV1's, though after Oculus dropped the price significantly, I do remember quality control complaints about CV1 uniformity (different batches of displays probably responded to SPUD inconsistently). I never notice any issues with Quest 1 myself, but I admittedly barely used it as it was terrible for PC streaming and far too weak to render anything worthwhile itself. The OG Vive in particular still stands as the benchmark of VR OLEDs IMO, those panels were bright as fuck, blacks were deep as fuck, and the only minor mura style artifact was a very slight Plasma TV style pwm noise on certain dark shades of gray. It was for all intents and purpose the perfect VR display, and that thing is now decade old technology. Even the worst examples of them though still pale in comparison to the omnipresent pitfalls of LCD's, with their benefits more than making up for their minor annoyances.

I had a launch CV1, and the mura and black smear was ungodly terrible. Barely got through Lone Echo because I spent most of my time distracted by the image quality.

^This is a good visual reference for what I saw with the black smear in the CV1 and the Quest 1. Except the CV1 and Quest 1's mura added an extra layer of nasty to it.

The worst OLEDs are much worse than LCDs, unless your only metric for good image quality is deep blacks.

That Warhammer game is being delisted due to licensing. It's from the Wizards developers. The promo code above gives you 90% off, total in USD is $2.65.

Played a bit last night and it reminds me of Wizards titles but with melee combat. I dig Carbon Studios, good voice acting and art style. Fun gameplay too in all their games I've played.

I have quest3 and both sonys vr head sets, quest3 get the most use atm.
psvr1 was a rough pill to swallow on day one, had few hours with thumper and few
others but started collecting dust as the time went on.

I did not had much time with psvr2 as I got hold of a quest 3 soon after, with limited time I had it
felt as a minor improvement to visual clarity, it had great blacks with games like elite dangerus, but still felt not clear when used in pc to read text.
I did not had time to use psvr2 on ps5/pro yet, looking forward to trying GT7 and psvr2.

With quest 3 even lacking deep blacks and eye tracking, I felt it was the true upgrade to psvr1 with the help of sancake lenses.
with built in wifi and ability to work with out a pc, I think a low budget tv/monitor can be replaced with this headset.
quest 3 feel like a mid/high end android phone where you can use emulators and browse internet but with ability to
stream/cast from steam link and use hdmi output from ps5/xbox to display as a second screen inside the headset.

Spend alot of time setting up steamdeck/quest3 itch.io bundle games.
really felt like a new console after ps2 >

quest 3 Fresnel vs Pancake, built in os/wifi, play emulators, cast steam ps4/5/xobx/whatever
psvr good blacks eye tracking, comfort, ps5/GT

sorry for the long ramble.

Have you looked into Asgard's Wrath 2 yet? There's no other full fledged VR game with its size and scope on any platform. The setting is Egyptian and its sort of mash up of Skyrim and puzzles like Zelda, but man, that is probably one of my favorite games ever. The tutorial is about 5 hours long, but its a solid 60 hour AAA RPG.

Oh yea, that's the main reason I got the headset. I got a year of Quest+ because it has AW2, which was really nice because a year subscription is $60 and you get a free month, plus $25 in store credit. AW2 by itself is $60. And on top of it, the 3s came with Batman. What a good deal!

I played for a few minutes the other week but I want to get through some smaller games before I dive into it. I was really impressed with the intro though, I'm really looking forward to playing it.

Yeah, the tutorial portion is pretty long but the game continues to impress even after 40 hours.

This is Quest 3 footage without a PC. It looks good considering the scale of it. Apparently it uses google earth somehow?

I don't know if you snagged that Warhammer game I posted but it's a total gem of a game. Highly recommended if that promo code works in your region. It's not a perfect game by any means but the exploration and overall vibe is such a treat. Combat is solid too, once I realized to just use magic for everything and not to actually melee. You're so OP in it. I've been hooked and am near the end, probably 10 hour game total if you explore and aren't in a rush.

welcome to the club

If you ever get bored of what's on the store, there are a ton of classic games modded to VR that you can install directly into your headset even without using a connected PC. Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider, HL1, Doom, Quake II, Jedi Outcast, etc

I tried the trial months ago but can't remember why I didn't like it.

I'd wager that you didn't like the melee combat, or that you weren't sure how to progress once you got to the main camp (post tutorial).

The melee is somewhat rough but you can easily unlock spells and once you realize how OP they are, it's just a matter of monitoring your regenerating magic meter and keeping distance from enemies. Parrying works but you can completely ignore it.

Accessing the first real quest can be confusing because you have to use the teleport, "jump" mechanic to go down into an area at the main hub, I didnt realize that and wandered the hub for like 10 mins thinking the game had soft locked. There might be a navigation system but it wasn't on for me. I only say that because videos online show enemy health bars and that isn't on in my game.

If you're like me and are generally forgiving with the limitations of most VR games, you'll probably really enjoy it once you get a feel for the magic mechanics. It's such a steal at $2.65. I honestly would have been fine paying $25 but I'm also really forgiving with VR.

The game gives you access to some fairly large areas to explore and within those areas are optional side quests. Those quests are great though. You basically just explore ruins and fight ghosts, collect upgrade materials and then progress forward. A few puzzles as well and the game does a good job of keeping environments fresh. The 2nd half of the game completely changes the location and its a nice change of environment.

I don't think people realize just how good some of these retro VR conversions are. Jedi Knight 2 has full motion controlled lightsabers and in 1st/3rd person. You can deflect blaster bolts, full dismemberment, and force powers are gestures.

Imagine jumping through the air 30ft in 1st person and landing in the middle of 5 stormtroopers, cutting off one of their heads with the saber(you feel the singe of the blade with the haptics melting through flesh) force push 3 of them, then redirect blaster bolt to kill the last enemy.

It's just the closest jedi sim there is, and being wireless you can really get into it with spin moves and let loose. You can even conceal the blade in "holster" and do a quick flick with wrist that ignites the blade instantly. Just like this:

It sounds simple but they nailed so many small things and made the game 1000x more immersive. Tweaks to the difficultly to make it more challenging in VR(because you're literally a badass) but also options for just about anything you can think of VR related.

The work and care that went into these by Team Beef VR ports is just outstanding. It never feels like some half baked port or mod. No PC needed.

It's one of my favorite things about VR... I don't even necessarily want the old games to be remade, I just love diving into their original worlds in full scale. It's like going behind the screen from what I remember of the original and getting to look around behind the scenes. You see all kinds of details you never would have noticed before, and the sense of the different environments really changes.

It won't run without a connected PC, but the Portal 2 full VR mod is also one of my favorite experiences so far.

So I've just discovered this Ready or Not like game in the store called Split Second for $9,99/4,99€

There's a VR Mod for Ready or Not, but this might be cool for standalone peeps

I think Google made the API available for everyone because it spawned many Google Earth clones on the Quest :D
But damn, this Glider Sim is already expensive and then wants a subscription for Google Earth? Seems shady.
I'd recommend EarthQuest.

I might get this...

Does anyone capture gameplay or stream? I'm trying to capture gameplay but there's no game audio. I can get mic audio but I don't want that. I've tried capturing direct to the headset and casting it to a browser. No audio.

Seems to be a widespread issue based on google results.

Anyone ever experience this and know how to fix it?

I've captured footage but it just randomly worked for me.

Is there any decent way to stream while gaming? I tried Facebook and it works but there is problem because sound lags and if someone comments something, they are like a minute after the stream, so that does not work. I cant try youtube though because I have to have 50 followers to livestream there trough q3.

I would love to be able to stream to twitch from standalone, or youtube. I can stream to yt on PlayStation even though i dont have 50 followers.

Anyone have any tips, would just like to stream like anywhere as long as it not lags with sound etc.

That's insane that you need 50 followers to stream on YT through Quest.
