Microsoft unveils quantum computing chip, invented a completely new state of matter (!!!)

Most of us grew up learning there are three main types of matter that matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Today, that changed. After a nearly 20 year pursuit, we’ve created an entirely new state of matter, unlocked by a new class of materials, topoconductors, that enable a fundamental leap in computing.

An excellent Grok summary on why this is a huge deal:

We are witnessing technological breakthroughs at unprecedented scale and frequency. Unbelievable things are happening at breakneck pace.

>The processor operates through a material called a topoconductor, which monitors and manages quantum particles named Majoranas to generate quantum bits

This sounds like straight up magic or Star Wars lmao, this shit really did become indistinguishable. I am inclined to believe this is huge, simply because of how Nadella talks about it. It does sound a bit too good to be true, which is always an issue when anything with "quantum" makes the headlines - and usually then it is - but this might be different.

So they used Majorana as a name, the guy that no-one believed and is supposed to have inveted the "convert materiea" machine... I know ppl in real life that say they know him in person and that he hasn't age at all, kinda bs, but this makes me reevaluate some things I've been told.

If someone finds a nice animated video on the topic of topology and what it means related to this subject then feel free to share! It really helps me understand things better than just reading about it. Same with microbiology.

This is marketing. That new! material isn’t new, it reinforces a known theoretical result.

Majorana is the name of an Italian physicist.

This result is purely hype & marketing. Right now there’s no real mass market application for it. I have utmost respect for MS to keep pursuing this project.

Looking forward similar announcements by IBM & Google.

If it is as good as they claim, surely it would revolutionise world just by being a tool for science and industry?

Goodbye to any known forms of encryption once these get refined. Setec Astronomy.
I wouldn't say "any known forms". Quantum-resistant encryption has been around for a while, so it's really just factorial-based encryption, like RSA, which relies on the difficulty of prime number factoring, that we say goodbye to. Lattice encryption has been shown to be quantum-resistant, for example, and varients of zero proofs make the rounds every few years. But yeah - encryption will need to step up.

I thought there was like 6 states of matter and 3 of them involved plasma? Also I thought now we had 7 because #BlackLivesMatter

Well, for starters I'm glad a microsoft video didn't start with an apology for building on the land some tribe took from another tribe who took it from yet another tribe before our tribe took it. Second, she didn't physically describe herself because I still don't know why they were doing that. Thirdly, this is gonna be called "MaJORana" instead of "MaYOURana" by like 99% of people, why they playing games with us?

And we all know this ends up in a device that just has bloated, poorly optimized software so it runs 5% faster than shit today.

That's a thing for the blind. Even some folks do that on IG ... ESPECIALLY deaf folks who are posting on there (in the description or caption)

Fair enough, though it seems like simething that would be embedded in the cmosed captioning for the deaf or the audio transcription for the blind rather than presented in the main video for the other 98%. I would assume a blind person would have little use for a descriptor like "blonde wearing a blue sweater" versus just making sure the presenters are visually and auditorially distinguishable (not too many women all with focal fry, for example) but what do i know?

There's a setting on smartphones and computers to read out what the video (it usually is video and not so much images) contains in the caption. There's also descriptive audio, which is what you were describing. It's not available in all video services yet.

IBM in shambles? Nvm I guess they would just create their own with the same tech.
