MotorStorm review [Gamespot]

Evolution deserves the reviews its been getting. I don't understand how hard could it be to add basic shit to the game like time trials.

Like I said, if the worse thing about this game is the lack of features then I'll pick this up. God of War II first then MS second. The demo is loads of fun.

When I played the demo (which I wasn't the biggest fan of gameplay-wise) it still gave me that awesome "only available in the arcade" feel I used to get in the 90s.

It's like the latest MODEL 3 racer just came out in the arcades and there's a 100% perfect home version day one. Does that make any sense to anyone?

I felt the same way about that PC offroad racer from Ratbag. I can never remember what it's called. But I loved it. Similar look and feel, but ancient.

Also, is the track from the demo one of the 8 in the game? And if so is it tweaked?

EDIT: Powerslide

Mario Kart: DD is by far my favorite Mario Kart. :( The co-op mechanics were just fantastic, if only the game had another cup of difficulty.

I'm still getting it even tho the single player looks less the stellar. The game looks like it will be a blast to play online and hell I even bought chromehounds just for the online experience.

mmm... Blu ray! 10000 GB of space? where are them?

Well, this game still looks amazing, i dont care about GS reviews :D

Motorstorm still will be sold

How was VF5 half baked? oh...the online again? :/

*sigh*

The only thing really missing was a more in-depth training mode. People were spoiled with VF:Evo. Online has been discussed ad nauseam. Not sure how that makes the game "half-baked" however.

I guess my next question would be how the heck does Gamespot and 1up give it a 7.9 and 7.5 respectively while IGN gives it an 8.9? That is a pretty big gap their. Who's right?

Isn't IGN usually much more lenient in review scores? That said I don't know what people are worried about, 7.9 and 7.5 are still good scores.

Well, IGN scored EXCITE TRUCK an 8, so my guess is they really like arcade racers
yes, different platforms and reviewers
.

I'd pick this up if the PS3 wasn't twenty-five hundred USD here.

I agree with everything you just said. Is that wrong? I really don't see how VF5 was half-baked. And this is coming from a Tekken fan, so there is no bias. :lol

It'll sell great because it looks ****ing amazing and spectacular, and because it's so far the only next-gen racer of its kind.
True. Well, I hope it will sell well because I want them to make an even more impressive sequel, but really, if the core gameplay and graphics were lacking, but the amount of modes, unlockables, etc was huge, thus bringing it this same score - I would skip on a game. Something short but impressive is much more likely to get my play time.

It makes sense, but it would have to be something like MODEL 6 to make perfect sense ;)

Review scores for MotorStorm come down to how much you value the core gameplay which I personally think is a brilliant achievement. The reviews are very consistent though in that if you are going for online as your focus then it's definitely a must get.

i have tons of fun playing the 1 track demo, so 8 or whatever tracks + online should entertain the hell out of me

and i got it for 49.99 cdn on amazon so it should be good

I wonder why if they acknowledge that Online is such a big portion compared to the single-player, and it's that good, why the single-player has to be just as great.

Tribes 2 = 3.9?
Counter-Strike = 3.9?
Counter-Strike: Source with Bots = 5.9?

Last time I checked, 7.9 is a solid score.

People always expecting hyped up games to get a 9+ are ludicrous.

Look. According to your profile, you've only been here for 2 1/2 months, so I'll cut you some slack. Maybe you haven't caught on to the GAF scoring system, so here's a handy guide:

10 = Passable
9.9 - 9.5 = Good enough to bring up in other, unrelated threads
9.4 - 9.0 = Meets expectations, tear up the suicide pacts, etc.
8.9 - 8.0 = Bomba
7.9 and below = TEH SUCK

Wait, I knew about all that other shit, but NO OFFLINE MULTIPLAYER?

I like how this forces some of the people who hated on ExciteTruck on Wii launch to switch their expectations for content in a game.

im waaay jealous of all you ps3 owners for getting to play the holyness that is VF5, but isnt this a Motorstorm thread?

I'm not exactly caught up in the Motorstorm hype, but i don't get how these reviews are getting so much flak and they are actually doing more to sell it to me than the hype. All of them are more or less saying that the mechanics and polish on the environments/vehicles is top notch, but that there simply isnt enough of it. Sounds like roughly 80% are not only in order, but an encouraging score for a game with limited content and not really re-inventing much in regards to the gameplay. It definitely is providing a great jump-off for racing in the mud in next-gen.

I mean aside from Wollan's "intuition" reviews that he has perfected, what are the rest of you bitching about?

Edit: and with all the "online play" complaints.. where were you guys when Chromehounds got panned?

i've done a lot of research into this very question, and the conclusion i have come to is that, brace yourself, different people have different opinions.

MotorStorm is gonna be a prime example of how few people really consider review scores when purchasing a game. :lol

really? i thought all of the hype was around the visuals and physics from the beginning; the game was to match the trailer from E3.

does this prove that graphics are more important than gameplay because as seen in all the reviews, the gameplay seems to be stale.

Without question, amazing work.

yeah sorry, that comment of VF5 being half-baked just made me a little anxious to kick ET's ass.

now, back to motorstorm. as I've said many times before, can't wait to play it. two more days! :D

That was before we all played the demo and found out it was also fun.

I know from experience that you can't help yourself, but what in the hell are you talking about? Just about every review I've read or seen seems to suggest that the gameplay, the racing of vehicles through mud and dust, is a riot. Just about every review docks the score because of lacking options, not because of "stale" gameplay.

It's good, but I wouldn't buy a PS3 for it.

That's my opinion as well. I played it at Gamestop and that it was good, but definitely not omg amazing. The eye candy aside, it's just a racing game, which bodes poorly for me because I'm not a big racing game fan.

:lol Garnett?

From what I understand from the reviews the game has fun as hell core gameplay but single player features are limited. I'm buying it.

7.9 is pretty good considering its coming from Gamespot.. since when did 7.9 mean its a bad game like half the people in this thread seems to think? Weird

Im still getting it, i been waiting for this and ..heck i'll get it just for the stellar visuals and fun gameplay...

Great racing. Great online play. That's all I really wanted so I'll have to pick this up. Unless you're bitter or only play offline I don't see how people could be disappointed. A year from now though I won't be as forgiving, but for now and PS3 still less than 6 months old it should be fun.

I fully understand the GAF scoring system. My post directly before that one would show that.

But thanks for reading my profile!
