New AAA PlayStation Studio established in LA

Why hire people to make games when we have AI?

You still need someone to write the prompts though.
I'll send my resume to Sony

I'm sure a senior AI artist position at Sony will pay better than my current job

Sony loves diversitiy so much, yet their highend AAA output is a bit samey. Hope the studio goes for a fps or rpg or anything other than an over the shoulder action adventure.

For God's sake.... No, and even less if it's from Horizon

Kinda agree. Think it's time for them to move on from TLOU for a while game-wise at least. And Horizon...well I quite enjoyed HFW and the game is a technical marvel, but at times it almost feels like they're pushing it at the expense of IP the majority would rather see get that treatment.

Bloodborne is a great example, and I'm sure now something like Astro Bot is up there too.

maybe I am out of the loop but what is bad about LA?

-Super expensive

-Hollyweird infestation

-Lots of creatives out of touch with most regular people

-Mecca for divisive hard far-left political propaganda in a lot of Western entertainment

Yes, it's like they only focus on Horizon, TLOU, God of War and Spiderman...

I mean, I love Gravity Rush because of Kat and how fun it is, but there comes a time when it's annoying to see Aloy and Ellie all the time. I want to see what Japan Studio was like.

And Los Angeles, for God's sake... why not in Japan?

LA...

Sure, just establish a new studio in the 2nd most expensive state in the USA and 2nd most expensive city in California, especially right after you got bamboozled for $700 Billion in Concords failure.

What a ridic claim to make. And we don't even know the game yet.

Gaming will never be what it used to be will it?
It's California so I can understand why someone would think that way but yeah folks should wait to actually see the game before judging that the game will be no good.

Correct. Gaming will never be what it used to be. A mixture of good and bad progress.

Someone that worked on Concord that demanded everyone call her the professor, hates guns and tried getting unvaccinated people fired

Oh the all inclusive left that isnt inclusive when you are straight or white or gun owner or support bodily autonomy .

Cant blame them though. They got brainwashed in universities with the woke virus.

Also love how they are all about supporting the black communities but none of them even have a single black friend AND they burned down all the black businesses in all the riots.

Bunch of fake nobodies that want to live off my taxes and dont want to contribute in any way other than cause racebaiting and division.

Oh i will call you professor but you dont want to know under what circumstances.

Platforms and publishers complain about ballooning development costs, yet they continue to pick one of the most expensive places to live, pay taxes, and build in the world.
No normal business would ever set up anything in california unless they have some strong affiliation with that goverments policies.
Meaning we already know what agenda to look out for .
But as you said why pick the most exoensive places? So you can claim we are over budget but more than half of that goes to personal expense?

Not sure how to tie my experience to this example but maybe this will ooen some eyes .
We do some projects for big goverment enities . Lets just say the budget is not the actual budget , cost is not the actual cost.
When we bid on a job and get close, in order to seal the deal we have to do some scammy shit. We get requests to mark up the job and to allocate that difference to the manager or owner or share holder at completion. So if a job is 100k we budget and price 130k and out of that 30k goes into someones pocket. The amount of kickbacks we have to do in order to secure the jobs is insane. And its all tax payer funded.
Now you know how some people in the goverment if not all become rich and people become poorrer every day.

Exactly.

They are the ones who pick the place, people and agree on product dev, strategy and marketing. Nobody is forcing them to do things.

How many other industries in the world the past 5-10 years have product budgets that zoom up like video games and movies/TV (ie. hilarious She Hulk TV show at $225M for 9 episodes). Costs have gone up due to inflation, short supply of raw goods and interest rates, but not like many media companies. It's like theyre in their own stratosphere. And that's despite software not being like physical product makers whose costs get nailed by port strikes trucker shortages, raw ingredient and commodity costs going up. Things pretty much out of their control. And costs are still reasonably in line.

Who knows. Maybe the costs of software dev tools, renting servers, and pressing discs all tripled the past 5 years. But I dont get a sense that has happened.

Discovered in a recent job listing.

It's the PS Studios team from LA with the former Deviation employees:

Please be the Last of Us Online studio
It isn't, the TLOU Online game was being made at ND and got cancelled. This is a team with mostly ex-Deviation employees.

Probably the new studio based off Bungie people which shifted over to SIE when they laid off staff.
No, the PS Studios team that branched out from Bungie is in Bellevue, Washington. Like Bungie and Firewalk.

The team in the OP is a LA team with ex-Deviation staff.

Does the game dev apparatus still want to live in California? If so, it makes sense, but the cost of this place will be nuts. They'll have to do A LOT of outsourcing.

Maybe we're inching closer to a future where the creatives/upper management are in expensive areas while the coders are outsourced elsewhere.
There are talented gamedevs around the world. But these ones were already living in LA working in Deviation. And before in many top tier shooters such as CoD.

I look forward to them spending $800 million and six years to release a game that gets pulled from shelves in 24 hours.

This is a competition between the internal studios after all.

Ah. I totally missed or forgot about that old Gaf post about Deviation staff.
