Ok here's a weird one, that thankfully I learned before my son was born. Do NOT buy a Diaper Genie. It's junk and will break on you in a matter of months. If you can find one get an old style Diaper Champ. Even if it is used it's a great product. It uses regular trash bags and not propitiatory bags and isn't mechanically complicated so it won't break. (It's just a weighted plunger that pushes the diaper to the pail when you flip the lid) I am still using the pail and my son just turned 3.

I say get the older version because they did a redesign a year or so ago and they made it worse. Here's the new version So stay away from this one.:

I took a quick look and found a seller on Ebay selling the old style for half than the Amazon link I posted.

Not a fan of diaper genies and stuff like that. We just had a plastic grocery bag hanging a from a hook at the changing table. One or two pee diapers go in there but a poo diaper goes in and then immediately outside into a separate garbage can. I never liked the idea of shit staying in the room, even in a closed container.

My daughter turned 6 months this week, and we're enjoying every single day. Yes, even the days when she's sick or has a hard time falling asleep.

If there's one advice I can give any fresh parent, it's to enjoy as many seconds of your kids' lives as you can. The saying "they grow up so fast" is so very, very true.
We recently watched old footage from 4-5 months ago, and realized how fast she's grown.

Its not as bad, really. After all he/she is your kid so you get over the feeling of yuckiness quickly, if you dont then you will at some point .. And cleaning the poop diaper is pretty simple, just hold it under the tap at full pressure for a few seconds and put it in the diaper bin. Rarely you would have to scrub a little with a brush.

As for your kid having gas after moving to formula, check the iron content. Some formulas have lower iron content or are made specifically for kids with gas issues.

My son is going on 1 year in June and up until very recently he was great at sleeping, rocked to sleep in 5 minutes and then usually 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Just recently though he has become really difficult to get to sleep, he is still wide awake at midnight and does not want to fall asleep for anything. I think that now he is crawling and climbing everywhere he is too excited to just give up and go to sleep.

Heh, mine is kinda starting to maybe be the opposite. She goes down super easy at night at around 8 and sleeps till about 7ish. So usually a bit less than 11 hours when all is said and done. She loves going everywhere and now that she's walking, over the last few days she's actually been sleeping in until 7:30. She loves being up in the daytime, used to refuse to nap, but she definitely loves her night sleep.

I'm not sure how expensive it is compared to other models, just got the one my gf (a child care specialist) says is the best one. If I start looking for bargains on things designed to protect my child in a car crash I think I've already failed as a parent.

What did you end up getting? We got a Chico infant seat that was awesome, but he outgrew it quickly and we had to get a rear/front facing convertible seat (went with maxi-cosi) after 6 months.

Then he got an ear infection a few weeks later which caused him to break out in hives (was weird).

The ear infections have been coming and going pretty much all year. He's got an appointment with an ENT on the 5th of June.

Now he's throwing up and has diarrhea.

It breaks my heart to see him like this. He's such an awesome little kid who doesn't deserve this shit thrown on him. It's breaking my heart.

I recommend Destin and plenty of it for diaper rash. Worked wonders for my son. Of course at that age you will be visiting the doctor on a regular basis so they may give you something better.

I second Destin. Great stuff. If the rash cracks though, you'll probably need something different.

The infat seat with base was super convenient, was great to be able to strap the baby in inside the house and snap it into the base. The only problem was he got too tall for this seat rather quickly. The stroller is also kind of a piece of crap.

I would say be prepared to spend way more than you think it's going to cost on a nice stroller. This one is serviceable for the mall, but if you plan to go on walks on city streets or parks, you are going to need one with >5" wheels.

I ended up getting a BOB, and it was the best thing I have bought so far for my kid!

We got a City Mini Elite, one of the things I hate about strollers is how difficult they can be to collapse but with the City Mini you just pull one handle and done! Lots of other great features, too. And it isn't ridiculously overpriced like a lot of strollers.

Well, i have a 5 month old and he is so rad. He waked up like 2 or 3 times a night but its kinda a routine now. Check his diaper, feed him, burp him which them puts him to sleep...then do it again when he wakes up. I swaddle him and then lay him in his crib. When he gets real fussy he sleeps next to me in bed. When im with him we listen to music and watch soccer...and its true, when he naps you should also nap

I couldn't agree more! 7 week old baby here. Very colic. Using those gas drops that the doctor recommended. Helps our baby sleep a few hours straight at night. Usually wakes up just for feeding, changing and burping. Swaddle him up and back to sleep. I love listening to music with my baby too. Oh and watching racing!

The BOB is the one stroller in our arsenal of strollers I don't hate. It's tall enough for me and actually maneuvers really well.

Everything else we own either handles like a tank or is too short.

We originally went with one of those all in one travel sets that gets you the car seat, stroller, it converts and all that jazz but ended up returning it because it was just a big cumbersome thing. What we ended up was this:

It may look small, but it's actually a larger version of what I think you got. It's rated to fit a kid up to 32" with a weight limit of 35 pounds. We're just now looking to switch to a different seat, but it's lasted us a good 13 months and our girl is tall for her age; 98th percentile so it has done wonders. We still pull the whole seat out when she's sleeping sometimes too. For the stroller we got one of these:

It's very light which is great for my wife to be able to pull out of the car and put away easily and very compact compared to the other strollers, especially those all in one travel systems. It was really the best recommendation we got from two different people when it came to strollers. We really assumed we'd get one of those bigger things, but this was an eye opener. We used that up until a few months ago when we started putting her in the shopping cart and using a stroller that was forward facing. Never had an issue going to the park or taking a stroll around the neighborhood in it either. Heh I admit, I laughed at one of those things and thought they were cheap and flimsy the first time I ever saw one in a store. Totally ate crow on that one.

I see advice on Desitin, much like Ukraine, Desitin is weak. Get some Dr. Smith's diaper cream, put on a good coat of that(don't be afaird to get a lot on there). Then for the secret fix put a very light coating of petroleum jelly on top of the Dr. Smiths cream, that film will keep the new poop stuff off entirely. Seriously my wife and I were sceptical but it changed our lives at the time.

Get it. It's amazing for diaper rash. My MIL brought a bunch back from Germany and it really works well. AFAIK, diaper rash is caused because of the reaction between the urine and poop, it creates ammonia or something. This stuff is so thick and stiff that it creates a barrier between the diaper and the skin. We never really had big problems with diaper rash but when we would come across it this stuff worked wonders.

Not sure if you can get this in the States though.

Well, there are two things worth noting for us. For starters, our son (8 months) has been all breast milk and no formula. The second is that cleaning the diapers really isn't that awful, in particular if they're cleaned immediately as opposed to thrown in the dirty diaper container we have and only rinsed before washing.

We got this spray hose thing that connected to the toilet. If rinsed shortly after the deed is done, it sprays right off. So, while I certainly wouldn't call the activity pleasant, it also isn't anywhere near as bad as I envisioned it.

For about $500 in up front costs, we bought enough diapers to go 3-4 days between washes, and haven't had to buy disposables since about the end of the first month.

Yup, cloth diapers are the way to go. Daughter is 10 months old and using all the cloth diapers and covers that we used for our son who is now 4.

We also bought 20 wash cloths ($10 at the dollar store) and have never bought a package of wipes... just wet-down the wash cloth and then dump it into the diaper bin for washing after its been used.

Btw I have a tip to share to help bubs sleep longer, most of you probably already know it but I only learnt this one a few months in.

They call it 'dream feeding', for us it works like this, the missus gives bubs a feed at about 9pm and takes her to bed. At about midnight when I go to bed I gently pick bubs up and pop a bottle in her mouth and she'll feed without waking up. The I carry her around for 5-10 mins or so to let it all settle into her tummy and then put her back to bed, ideally without her really waking up properly at any stage. After a dream feed she'll then sleep through to around 7am.

We co-sleep too. We didn't do it until she grew out of her first cradle, but now that she's ready for her cot I can't bring myself to put her in, she's so used to sleeping with us and vica versa, it's probably gonna be a hard habit to break her from later on but for now it's working out really well.

We actually set him up in his own room from day one. It was pretty tough at first (and I checked on him a lot), but he's been a pretty solid sleeper. He tends to generally sleep pretty well through the night (barring sickness or some noise of course).

We wanted to avoid some things we saw with our family members and their kids - namely the kid never learning to sleep in his own room/bed and getting too used to sleeping in the bed with the parents. My wife has a cousin that her kid would go nuts if they tried to get him to sleep in his own bed, because they let him sleep with them for most of his life.


Be on the lookout for a period of a week or two where all the sudden his sleeping habits will just change dramatically. There's actually a 'name' for this as it is fairly common. Try and stick to the normal schedule as much as you can and they usually snap out of it. It freaked me out at first, till I looked it up online and saw that other people were dealing with it.

Kirkland diapers are fantastic. We use Huggies occasionally too and they aren't bad - I had way more blowouts with Pampers than either brand, though.

We also used cloth diapers for five or six months after our first was born. I do not miss them. We even had a diaper service for most of that so we didn't have to worry about cleaning, and having the wretched things fester in a bin for even a day...jesus. It was filtered and scented and everything but there's something unholy in baby shit that managed to overpower it all.

I have an Elite like that as well (black with white racing stripes), though it's a few years old now and has a foot brake instead of the new one mounted to the side of the handles. I love that stroller so much, and am glad I went with it over the comparably priced Bob - EVERYONE has a damn Bob Revo it seems, the Elite folds easier and is designed in such a way that a 6'5" guy like me can actually walk it without stubbing my toes into the rear axle.

Only downside is that like the Bob, the stroller's accessories are insanely overpriced. They're so bad I ended up just buying a cheap guzzie & guss to act as a carseat carrier as the adapter bar for the Elite cost the same and from experimenting, resulted in a wobbly stroller due to the increased weight over the front wheel. Though with two kids in a few weeks I'm not entirely sure if I'll want two strollers, I may just consolidate into one stroller, maybe that awesome looking City Select.

How does this work with sleeping with your kid though? By just a week before 3 months, our kid was sleeping at 8pm all the way through 7am. There's no way we'd be in bed by 8, and there's no way I'd leave her in the bed alone. I just don't see how co-sleeping would work.

On a different note, my nieces didn't sleep in their parents bed, but the parents would lay down with them in their bed. It came to a point where it would take them well over an hour to put them to bed because of this. They refused to sleep alone, would cry otherwise, and they'd have to stay up with them for so long. Sometimes two hours. They're now 6 and almost 4. I know the 3 year old was definitely still doing this but no sure about the 6 year old. I told my wife there was no way in hell we were encouraging that.

I'm so glad my girl goes down within 5 to 10 min of being left there without complaining almost all the time for the last 11.5 months and sleeps 11 hours. She loves her sleep and isn't dependent on anything.

I'm not saying most kids are like mine, but I have to think that by 6 months even if they aren't sleeping through the night, they are at least being put down for night time sleeping before the parents generally go to bed. By co-sleeping instead of using a crib, someone would always have to be going to bed early right? I'm just saying I don't understand how co-sleeping works between say 6 months to 2 years because of the difference in bedtime.
