NPD Sales Results for December 2013 [Up2: Xbox One/360 HW, 3DS top system of year]

It's horribly weak in the grand scheme of things, but it's surprisingly good considering the Jan-Nov numbers.

Rolling over on your side is not much of an accomplishment after you've been face down on the floor unconscious for nearly 11 months.

Maybe it's a glass half empty thing, but no recognition of achievement is in order. It's just a failure.

Was digital tracked at 4m before the retail version came out? Not sure if I'm remembering that number correctly, though. Paging Rlan! :D

Edit:
And 200K for Pikmin 3 is terrible.

Edit2:
No, I take that back. It's actually pretty close to Pikmin 2's sales in the same timespan! :lol

Edit3:
Then again, maybe Pikmin 2's sales were terrible, too! :lol

Well it would be a bit silly if he said "We beat them by 3000-8000!" While its extremely supply constrained. Even Greenburg isnt that dumb.

It doesn't matter if its wrong. If sites report that the Xbox One outsold the PS4 in December, then he's done his job even if they do edit the article.

My God have mercy on all you fucks with a Wii-U who didn't buy this

Oops. :( I bought a Wii-U over the holidays, but didn't buy Wonderful 101.. I'm interested in the game, but I'm just not sure how much I'd like it based on the videos I've watched. To be honest, the whole Saturday morning/Power Ranger-ish vibe is kind of a turn off to me. The gameplay looks fun, but also complicated. I'm sure it's one of those games that feels better in your hand than watching it, though.

Anyways, I do want to get it, but I had limited money and other games took priority.

On Wii U:

Wow if number is ~480K. That number is way, way higher than what I expected. If not for still being terrible, it would almost be impressive in its own little way. I mean, it's still horrendous, but not as bad as the months leading up to it would lead you to expect. That said, I don't think any of us will be surprised to see it slip back down to 50K in January.

On PS3

Wow at that number, too, although I'm not entirely sure it's completely demand based. I know that when I went to a couple of local stores (Best Buy, Target) a couple of days before Christmas, there was only 1 PS3 to be found between them. I just don't know if either Sony shipments (or perhaps retailer orders) were all that high. Perhaps someone who follows Sony a lot more closely can shed light on this, but how likely is it that they've ramped down PS3 manufacturing capacity significantly in order to boost PS4?

Its fucking insane that Sony wouldve sold more if they sent 10,000 more PS4s in US. MS sold 908k and still have like tons of them in stores, they plastered every game commercial and almost every event on television with xbox one. I'm really curious for what the sales number will be for jan and feb. What will drive their sale for those months?

Lego is an utter classic, it completely blows me away. There so much to explore, the writing and humor is HILARIOUS, and the game is shockingly polished, go look up the E3 2012 trailer and gameplay from then, holy fuck it was bad, and Lego games are infamous for framerate issues and tearing IIRC. All gone in LCU on Wii U in the final build, a VERY wise delay from Nintendo of what was supposed to be a launch title.

LCU is a jaggy mess and runs like crap on my Wii U?

the depressing thing for vita has been watching its slow death at retail this year. its near impossible to find a new unit for sale in many of suburban so cal communities unless you visit gamestop... none of our area targets have had a vita touch the shelf since early spring. its about the same in walmart/toys r us and a good portion of the best buys (especially since the video game shuffle during next gen launch, the system has even less shelf space, if possible).

how they get any footing back beyond... even if the system comes into stock again, the fact its followed with a 5-10 game selection isn't going to help sell anything. following the electronics reshuffle coming to some toys r us/targets this year, the vita selection is going to get nuked (along with VG selection overall)... things aren't pretty.

That's kind of surprising. Wonder if Rayman would've done much better launching in February as a Wii U exclusive for 6 months.

Microsoft would not have let them release on the 360 if that was the case, making a PS3 port not as cost effective to even try to port. I guess Ubisoft saw it as a successful decision since the combined 360/ps3 numbers still were close to the sole Wii U numbers.

the Wii U's been doing this everywhere though
of course I also expect to crash just as hard next month as it does in Japan, if not harder

Can we all at least agree on this...putting GT6 on ps3 was a complete disaster. Should have been made a ps4 launch title or delayed until it was ready to release simultaneously on both.

I would have purchased GT6 if it was on PS4. I don't agree with launching on multiple gens though, you're just holding the PS4 version back.

Hey, you'll get no argument from me. It has flopped very badly all told. People really get off on repeatedly pointing that out, eh? I'm just responding to the people that are acting like the numbers are surprisingly low or something, when they're actually pushing the high end of any reasonable expectations based on what has happened to this point.

No question. Even a quick port that up-converted assets would have sold double what the PS3 version has sold.

Not to sound pessimistic, but there's nothing that will sell PS4/XB1 until late Feb/March.

January and February are going to see very different NPD numbers to Nov/Dec.

It would require dedication to the product. Something that SCEA completely lacks. It's dead in the US.

A few late to the party things here:

-Early on there were so many references and jokes in this topic I just wasn't getting. I'm guessing part of that has to do with having never seen Lost.
-Jesus at those Vita numbers. I guess by the end of this year the thing will become an import-only machine for me....which isn't really an issue since I have no qualms with importing but eh.
-Those Miku numbers make me a sad JM. I've been importing the series since the original and I was ecstatic at the release of F here.
-Wii U isn't very good but it's about what I expected. Eh, it could be worse. 101 is sad but I bought it and so far it hasn't really clicked with me ( :( ). It's definitely the sort of game I hate to see do poorly though.

I'm already preparing my corner to get drunk in when Wii U slips back to 40k b/c of no game support

480K is "good" or probably more accurately just "a lot higher than expected"... considering how poorly the Wii U has been doing. It's much higher than I personally expected for sure.

It's still terrible in any wider context; e.g. last December Nintendo sold 1.1M units of home console hardware, this December that will only be ~630K.

It's bad compared to past Nintendo December's for the likes of the GCN.

And of course, there's this:

I'm not sure Sony cares about selling lots of PS3 consoles. I think they would sell what they have in inventory at a high profit. If they are making $50 per machine they made 12 or so million dollars in the month.

I think they care a lot. They bundled TLOU and Batman with a 250 gig unit and sold it for 199 this holiday season. It's just not an attractive console in the US. Well, not as much as the 360 , PS4, One. And apparently the WII U once a year.

With this proximity, it amazes me that CoD and Battlefield sold more on XBO.

And that with the competition of 3 exclusives selling more than 1.4m

And that folks is how you completely negate a one year head start..

I would prefer not saying it, as I would love some more Metroid and F-Zero. A Nintendo in survival mode is not going to dedicate resources to shaky IPs, so it's going to be a long wait for the next games in each series.

It's frustrating. Same with the Vita. I just bought 5 games in the latest sale. If SCEA gave a shake, it could at least be doing a little better. It could not do any worse.

The NPDs just confirm that both systems have very dim futures. Maybe it was unavoidable, considering current market forces. I won't pretend I know more about the industry than Tretton and Iwata.
