The key question is whether or not it's the chicken, or the egg. That changes the entire response, and the future of their entire business rides on them getting that question right.

Are console sales declining because they're putting games on PC? If so, that's your theory. Response is cut ports.
Are console sales declining anyway because people are transitioning to PC regardless? That's my theory. If so, they need to get their own store up and running on PC 4 years ago or they will have already missed the boat on building library and loyalty for the whole next generation of gamers. Two totally opposite approaches to the same problem.
Or, the third option, console sales are declining because four years into the console's life, it has not had a price drop. It's actually more expensive today than it was at launch. I don't know why people keep ignoring or forgetting this fact.

Again, we are comparing YOY data to a month with a major special edition PS5 console.

Sony will likely drop the console price at some point next year. They’ll be looking to balance any loss of profit in console sales, with profit made on game releases, and some big games are being released next year.

Nice legs on Astro.

Pretty good butt, too.

Really happy to see this, hopefully word of mouth will carry it

#2 is great!

Sure, could be that too. But then we have to also realize that this is the new normal. They're not really expected to drop anytime in the future. I'm not ignoring that. I said people could be potentially transitioning away from consoles regardless of what is ported. That's what most analysts have been saying about Gen Z for a while. Price is potentially a part of that. If that's true, price will be a factor going forward as well. It's not going to improve.

Except PC share is down too, more than consoles, so that marching order narrative is false

Why would price sensitive consumers move to PC where the expenses have gone up even more?

I think that this is the first time that we got a confirmation of lifetime Series S/X split? 51% now probably means that the Series S is selling less this year. Curious to see the split this holiday season. Hardware is down but Sony and Nintendo have excuses for it, or don't care that much. I hope that next year is better for them.

Holy fk hardware sales numbers are in the shit, specially compared to other generations, PS5 is doing decently tho, others are RIP, guess the Pro and Switch 2 can't come soon enough because man..

Also what the fuck is Fifa doing on Top 1 lmao, finally you americans understood which is the best sport? Good job, now it's time to realize Formula 1 >>> Nascar

Not really surprising.

The console market is currently being carried mostly by millennials, and this should continue for maybe another decade, and after that… I think it’s GG since gen z don’t care
Even as an enthusiast I struggle to justify owning one of these consoles. There's barely any exclusives, performance is trash, gotta pay for online features. PC really is the place to be these days.

pa5 had record breaking yoy numbers last year due to the influx of stock that was finally available, it's dropping to normalish numbers now that it's demand is being met. That being said, If ps5 is around 21M YTD 3 percent of that would put the portal around 600k YTD in the US, WW might be over 1 million units sold. Portal has been pretty successful imo, and it's been pretty steady with its sales.

The analysis on forums is in massive decline.

Some of you are really struggling to keep up with the new industry. It's not just about units sold, especially in a time where manufacturers can't cut prices to push more units.

The focus is on MAU and software sales.

Despite there being no big Starfield level release content spending is only down 3% YOY. That's a very strong result. How is it possible with hardware sales down so much? It's because MAUs deliver sales regardless of what hardware it sells on. Someone subscribing to PS+ or GamePass on PS4 or X1 is paying just as much as someone on PS5 or XBS.

If anything it shows how little impact Starfield had last year.

Neither Sony or Microsoft is interested in destroying operating income simply to push hardware to people who are playing Fortnite and other F2P games. That's just a reality.

I don't know why gamers are so focused in units sold on consoles they already own. These gamers are still playing games, the industry is having a pretty good year and yes GTA6 is going to push many people from the previous generation into this one.

As for cross gen, that's a new reality. The architecture isn't changing, game development spans hardware now. It's been like that in the PC world since forever. There is no such thing as a next generation game, it just comes down to CPU, GPU, and memory.

In one week Microsoft will post the results for the third quarter and it's not going to be pretty. My best guess is that hardware will have an around ~60% decline and that's apocalyptic. Playstation and Switch at least have other markets where they are doing somewhat better. Xbox as console is cooked.

They’ll still be able to hide it behind the Activision revenue increase though.

a decade of Playstation is more than enough for me, after that they can rest this Iconic brand forever.

But its a deserved rest after 40 years of success, unlike Sega and MS 🤣

Yep, I certainly misinterpreted it. Happily take the L on that one!

So the goal was left, but it’s right now!

The PlayStation brand is not going anywhere, but their reliance on “traditional” consoles will certainly change.

You are mixing a huge decline in console Hardware with a very small dip in console + PC + mobile games and suscriptions

There’s lots of exclusives, the top GOTY candidates are not on PC, and it’s PC ports that are trash, can’t really see your arguments broski

Owning a console only with just a ps5 pro sounding like a much better deal and that’s basically where I am

I'm not. I'm using easily obtained data on MAUs and revenue to draw pretty easy analysis of where the market actually is right now.

PC is seeing a decline in revenue. Mobile might be growing slightly, but console is pretty strong given the position of the XBS and Switch ahead of the Switch 2.

We're just in an in between point in the market where there is a reduction in people who want to buy full priced consoles. We'll see how that holds up next year with GTA6 and several major franchises going next-gen only, not to mention a strong slate from Sony. EA FC, Madden, and CoD are probably next gen only next year.

Again, I would love an explanation from people who think there is doom and gloom to explain why MAUs are remaining high if the console market is ACTUALLY in decline.

Also interesting that God of War Ragnarok only made it to #10 on its PC release month versus God of War (2018) that made it to #5 in Jan 2022

Gen Z and Gen Alpha don't care about consoles so fewer and fewer people will be entering the console space as time goes on. Their favorite streamers are using PCs so that's what they want.

Prime example here:

More and more enthusiasts are building PCs because that's where they can get the best performance and play all the games. You'd think with Xbox going the way of the dodo that they would pick up PlayStation's, but that's not happening. They're moving to PC.

The PS5 Pro appeals to mega PS fans like you who are already invested in the ecosystem and run damage control for PlayStation on enthusiast forums. It's not going to bring in a significant number of new users.

That’s not what the data suggests but continue living in your own mega fan bubble on PC
