NPD Sales Results for November 2015 [Up3: Combined Hardware For PS4 + XB1 + Wii U]

<200k for Tomb Raider...
I wonder if there's an escape clause, like Square Enix paying a small penalty to break the contract.
Afterall at this point Microsoft has more to gain by keeping a good relationship with the publisher for the future than it has by keeping this game exclusive.

At this point they need every penny Microsoft has promised them.
The franchise is damaged. I can't imagine anyone paying full price for Rise and it will be the same for the next game in the series.

Interesting stuff:

GH Live up big vs Oct
GTA just missed top 10
20 games in Nov 2014 >300k units; only 12 in Nov 2015

Not too shocked. Despite people saying this month was stacked, there weren't all that many new games. Just a few selling humongous amounts. Besides the usual COD/sports/AC the new stuff was basically just Fallout, Battlefront, and Halo. Plus Nintendo having nothing this year. Bigger sales being concentrated on fewer titles.

It will be interesting to how different those results for CoD/Fallout are for software with bundles included. Tomb Raider's sales are as expected. The audience for that franchise is not on Xbox.

I haven't been following this.

So are people apparently gleeful that TR tanked because they don't like the new TR? Or is it the XB1 timed exclusivity? Both?

For what it's worth, I think the game tanked mostly because of the other games coming out. Even if it had been released on both platforms, I think putting it out amongst Fallout, COD, Star Wars, and Halo was suicide.

Also, Microsoft's marketing muscle doesn't seem to be nearly as strong as it was last generation.

I think tomb Raider's biggest market is just not particularly Xbox centric, probably more Playstation if anything, additionally backed up by the sales split of the last game. Making the deal to sign it as an Xbox One exclusive, coupled with the timing of it's release, was just a double whammy in terms of sending it out to die. At least if it was multiplatform it would have garnered some more exposure.

Never forget.

Just imagine how badly it would have done if it had come out on all 3 systems.

Tomb Raider sold ~640k in march but was multiplatform. Rise of Tomb Raider is almost a Xbox One exclusive (360 is dead at this point).

If sold ~300k is not a bomba.

Tomb Raider sold at the end of the last gen. Many people like myself held off buying it to wait for it to come to the PS4/XB1. Also Tomb Raider was a reboot trying to rebuild a base. All that put together gave the game a slow start and long legs. RotTR should be more front loaded. Make no mistake. RotTR bomba'd.

Guitar Hero did well?

Where did we see that? Sorry, just got into the thread
He has been treasing some info.

But yeah. Guitar Hero has been doing well.

People focused last NPD on Rock Band charting and GH not, but not only their numbers were close, but GH had 14 days less of sales.

It shrunk for what one month this year in Halo month by 30k, the rest was all Sony wasn't it... I think in terms of contested, it's a none contest.

Yes we don't know MS strategy, but we can use good common sense that it's going to be extremely hard for them to close that gap without spending a lot of money on either 1st party games or exclusives and there doesn't seem much appetite for that now.

Uh it shrank 3 times this year, and Sony Slowly gained slowly. Doesn't matter who you are a fan of it's contested until Sony can land the final blow.

If Tomb Raider sold less than 200K imagine how bad that platinum exclusive for xbone is gonna sell. Do they even make bombs that big?

Its Platinum. They are already anticipating that their next game is gonna bomb like their previous games. People won't be shocked as well.

TR not in the top ten. Fuck. I kind of expected that might happen but it's crazy to see it just not listed at all.

Seems like a massive month for console sales across the board. Hope we see some kind of numbers. I assumed PS4 would win out but it's probably pretty close?
Unless you consider ~300K+ close, then no it doesn't seem to be that way.

Everything that has been said, plus: the exclusivity announcement was botched. They made it sound like it would only ever come out on the XB1, which was not true.

It's one of the reasons why Sony began using "console debut" and other terms when announcing games.

No MS PR?
I guess it is that one?

"Last month was our best November ever in the U.S. for Xbox One, setting new records for console sales, game sales and Xbox Live engagement. The most critically-acclaimed holiday lineup of exclusives in Xbox history helped drive 44 percent growth in Xbox Live hours over last November, and 72 percent growth in U.S. first-party retail game sales comparing sales from August through November in 2015 to the same period last year."

I think Tomb Raider will have legs. It's never going to be a big seller, but I think it will do well enough and will put up numbers on ps4 when it comes.

For Tomb Raider, the game quality is good, but the release strategy was incredibly stupid.

It launched on the second place platform in a month where game #3 sold 2 million copies, despite being in a genre which isn't exactly at the top of the charts this generation (or even getting made that much anymore).

Their best bet is to try selling the game at bargain bin prices to get it to as many people as possible so they're still positive about the next game due to the quality bar, though they might also have to adjust the game to match today's (and presumably tomorrow's even more intense) open world madness.

This is quite an unfortunate follow-up to a game that shipped 8.5 million units and already executed the bomba pricing strategy to build the audience for this one.

This is the most absolutely fucking baffling thing of the WHOLE situation.

Like... they've been through this. They had to completely change their pricing strategy to build a customer base for the next one with TR2013, and it was looking good and positive. They built that over a year, and it wasn't easy.

And then they cut the damn thing at the knees.

It's a good game that got buried by a poorly-thought-out deal in the long term and horrible release timing.

Agreed about the timing but what was the bad deal? I don't think the exclusivity in and of itself is the problem, so what about the deal was bad? Surely it would have sold better on both platforms but it still would not have charted.

Does anyone honestly that this game would have charted if it was multiplatform?

Hmm, all of that Call of Duty promotion and PS4 wasn't even the top selling platform for the game.

Intriguing.

Sony had Blops3 bundle whose copies did not count towards software chart. However, MS still has more COD fans, so it would probably not moved the needle much.

Which they swore up and down wouldn't be an issue despite the obvious problems this would create in terms of visibility. I really don't know why they felt like tempting fate on this--it clearly didn't pay off in the end. :/
