Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Realize This Assgrab is Delicious
This news is so toxic that part of me is waiting for the rebuttal or news that the story is BS. I don't believe it is, of course, I'm just in a state of disbelief over the whole thing.

What does Chelsea Clinton being on the board of directors have anything to do with Palmer? Is she a Vive fan girl or something?

No, though that would be amusing.

Just feels it's worth mentioning for the sake of transparency.

Them directly quoting him and saying he admitted to X would be 100% libel if it was false.

Right, which I'm not arguing against. I fully believe he admitted to it.

Woah, thanks!! Killer scene here. Holy hell, he is going to call in sick tomorrow, isn't he?

Oh, 100%.

The guy has 700M+

He's "done" in what sense?

This is very bad publicity for a young, up-and-coming techie that'll probably make current and potential mainstream business partners unwilling to have visible ties with him in the long term.

Obviously referring to his reputation and not his finances?

Right.

I wonder if he's going to be at Oculus Connect.

I've been following the Oculus twitter feed for some time. All the projects and things they highlight are often comprised of a large diversity of people. Not the kinds of people that would look favourably on a trump supporter.

This thread is moving so fast I couldn't see that before replying :(

Hey all good and no problems at all!

Honestly the majority of this thread has been some good discussion and I'm learning some perspective of different people here which is HUGE. Its one of the reasons I love gaming (to bring things full circle). It helps me see the point of view from someone else's life and understand them better. Gone Home and Life is Strange were both amazing to me playing through the perspective of a woman for example. It gave me a whole new understanding and appreciation of what others are feeling. I really hope we see more games tackle experiencing different types of peoples / cultures / ethnicity from their first hand perspective. I think its really under utilized and the industry and can be an amazing growing tool for individuals.

I don't know the site that well but it seems they've had several unsavory articles already this year:

Using Grindr to falsely draw out possibly closeted athletes in the Olympic village, which has since been pulled for being (rightfully) blasted.

This piece has been called inaccurate by several sources, one of which claimed it was a ridiculous smear.
.

That Kirchick article referenced was/is hot trash but it isn't legally actionable. Literally fabricating quotes from Palmer Luckey would be. I didn't mean to imply that The Daily Beast was beyond reproach; however it is a site of some size and consequence and there is virtually nothing to be gained, particularly for the Clinton camp, by smearing Palmer Luckey.

I really doubt he cares what the internet peanut gallery has to say, like Notch he'll just live out his days fucking around in a huge mansion and waving his dick around on social media.

He didn't even try to deny any of this.

You mean sociopathic billionaires? Yeah he's totally not earning reputation points with them right now. For a second I thought viciously capitalizing people and capitalism itself became inherently good for a second..

His girlfriend doesn't make me think its fake. You know how the saying goes, birds of a feather flock together

I just want to highlight this (as well as your earlier posts): being open enough to take comments on a heated forum/topic such as this and *truly* reflect on your opinions is admirable.

Ah, blame's on me then for misinterpreting it. You have a good point about the lack of potential gain here.

Fear mongering? I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps. 3 deployments, was forced out due to injuries and am now disabled. I have seen 1st hand what people want to do to the US. You take away defense spending, bad things will happen.

I'm done with this. I didn't realize GAF was so liberal dominated. Not sure if its better or worse than a conservative dominated board. Back to happy game threads for me.

And in those 4 years did you ever once question why you were there, or why the people you were fighting were fighting you?

I've met vets from the US, UK & Australia who have come back with far more insight into those questions than your simplistic bombast.

If the story was limited to Daily Beast he could probably get away with it but other mainstream and directly tech-related outlets are beginning to pick up on it. The kinds of people that know who Palmer Luckey is, including those directly involved in the industry, will be aware of this very quickly.

You mean sociopathic billionaires? Yeah he's totally not earning reputation points with them right now. For a second I thought viciously capitalizing people and capitalism itself became inherently good for a second..

Many billionaires are sociopaths, yeah. Are there people who are going to be turned onto Luckey because of this? Absolutely.

Many businesses know full well the potential for damage due to negative PR. I'm not foolish enough to think businesses tend to make decisions because they care, but in many cases if something threatens their public image though, that'll probably be what gives them cold feet.

NBC chose to weather the storm from having Trump on SNL or Fallon, but back when his comments started gaining ground they were quick to cut ties with The Apprentice. Why? Because they knew the PR from keeping that long-term train going wouldn't be worth it.

I just want to highlight this (as well as your earlier posts): being open enough to take comments on a heated forum/topic such as this and *truly* reflect on your opinions is admirable.

Agreed.

There's no need to "suggest" it. If someone's a Trump supporter, they're voting for a racist fear mongering shit rag.

It doesn't mean that they support racism! Just that they rather have a racist president than Hillary as president.

Some of you are so quick to jump the gun. Sheesh.

I find myself asking this question a lot lately - would it be cruel to send people like him and the groups they support to isolated colonies in the arctic region?

Great timing. Reveal yourself to be classless, bragging about your booze and jets, when your boss just donated four times your wealth to heal mankind.

Wasn't he still employed at OR and like, their public face and everything right up to today? He was way more outgoing and engaging than Notch ever was at least, and I'd say this stuff goes well beyond the dumbass twitter shitfests Notch has engaged with.

I really don't get the impression we'll be seeing him if at all much in these public events anymore, and unlike Notch I think he did dig the limelight.

Does Trump need to kill someone on national tv before we can say that?
Just start trying random negative gaming stories to Trump to try and chip away at that image. TRUMP PERSONALLY FUNDED METROID PRIME: FEDERATION FORCE

Trump did say he could shoot someone in the middle of the street and not lose any voters.

The funny part about that quote is that he'll say that, but can't release his tax returns because - according to his son - they would hurt him more than they would help. Makes you wonder what the fuck his tax returns would expose, I guess it'd be worse than finding out he shot someone in the middle of the street.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Or because 4 more years of a democrat pouring funds into the welfare state might literally bankrupt this country? There are different reasons for different people. Economy being a huge one.

This may come as a shock to you, but SNAP and TANF ("food stamps" and "welfare") combined are around $100 billion of the approximately $4 trillion budget. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq cost as much as decades of SNAP and TANF.
The annual cost of ACA ("Obamacare") is half the cost (in lost tax revenue) of the federal subsidies on employee-sponsored health care plans that professionals enjoyed long before ACA became a reality.

It doesn't mean that they support racism! Just that they rather have a racist president than Hillary as president.

This sad part is that people who aren't racist inherently end up supporting racism for this very reason. As besada touched on earlier in this thread, it's part of our fucked up election system

when your boss just donated four times your wealth to heal mankind.

I lol'd

I wonder how much of a mark this ends up leaving on Oculus. The mainstream audience either wont ever hear about this or they'll forget about this in a week. But the mainstream isn't buying VR right now. And indie developers are a fairly liberal bunch.
Palmer won't doing any more developer outreach for a while.
