Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

I'm not that surprised about a young guy with too much money funding stupid stuff like Trump memes.

But it's not good considering he's the "face" of Oculus.

My prevailing thought is how incredibly stupid this is. This entire situation is ridiculously, enormously stupid. What a stupid way to waste your money. You threw money at goddamn 8chan to make memes. This is what 24 year old near-billionaires spend their money on. It juxtaposes the image from their post about scotch on private jets. This is trashy and low-class as you can get.

If you wanted to be the youthful, intelligent face of a technology revolution, you probably shouldn't dress yourself in such low-brow activity.
Isn't that the image board full of racist pedophiles that wanted to form a nation with only white people in the heart of Africa?

Prior to this, what did Luckey do to piss off gaf? I always thought he was likable and thought pretty much everyone else did too. Did I miss some threads where he was otherwise linked to racist conservatism? I seem to vaguely recall something recently he did that wasn't related to this, but I don't recall when exactly he lost gafs apparent confidence.

Prior to selling his company to facebook, he spoke of technological openness, competition, rising tides raising all ships, VR being a medium not a platform. He gave literally dozens of lectures of the importance of teamwork and cooperation among multiple companies in order to launch a medium, success of the medium before the individual. He stirred many people with this talk, because it echos something within many in the field.

As soon as he sold his company to facebook, everything changed. Oculus slowly became closed off, a walled garden that bought exclusives. They stopped cooperating with other companies. The company that was founded by public goodwill to be an ambassador to VR became the kingpin of the medium, attempting to block competition.

This came to a boil when, within the span of weeks, Luckey would say one thing, then facebook would do the exact opposite with regards to ReVive, a piece of software that let Rift games run on other headsets.

In the end, a lot of what he said to win over people, wound up being bullshit. I don't resent Palmer Luckey for "selling out," I don't even resent him for what happened to Oculus once it was out of his control. I do resent him for immediately pivoting his position to lick boot as soon as he sold his company, though. It's one thing to sell your company and just shut up. It's another thing to sell your company and be the very thing you were speaking out against passionately just 6 months prior.

Decided to check Twitter before bed and saw that Palmer Luckey is trending.

Just the first few tweets I saw. And there are tons of websites, not just gaming ones, reporting on it as well. This is spreading fast.

The PC master race tweet is so good!!

Delicious. Thanks for the jolly good time Palmer.

I think we're just about past that. I liked this article related to the topic:

http://magafeed.com/gq-to-trump-supporters-fuck-you-no-seriously-go-fuck-yourselves/

Obviously still call people out, but anyone who supports Trump at this point is not ignorant of Trump being a terrible person. They simply agree with him, because they too are terrible people.

It is entirely possible I am overly forgiving. I was a person who OD'd on drugs and had to look at my family watch me die and be resuscitated at the age of 19 on a hospital bed. I tend to believe everyone has it in them to change and maybe that's romanticism.

Yeah I understand. Some of the stuff I see is shocking that Trump supporters believe. That Obama is a Muslim Terrorist born in Kenya and secretly wants the US destroyed? What the fuck? Listen people should be called out on bull shit like that.

But I think they should be called out with fact and education instead of insults. I'm not saying they should be totally left off the hook and say what they are feeling is fine or justified, just that they should be presented the cold hard truth regularly and often.

If they still refuse then at that point, they are a lost cause and your attention and time should be focused on someone else.

Sorry I'm posting so much everyone just enjoying the discussion.

Hilariously enough studies have shown that showing someone facts in response to a false belief only strengthens that belief.

That last paragraph is exactly how I feel too. Perfect.

why is it always when some one is outed as a racist or supporting a racist in come the people telling us that we shouldn't be angry or give up on them and that they don't know any better and must be taught

this is a 24 year old man. he grew up in a freaking hippy dippy state. he's smart enough to invent some virtual reality shit but not smart enough to tell the difference between right and wrong

Because bigotry. White guys are always redeemable!

The fact that oculus for Carmack to talk about minecraft VR on stage at e3 is unforgivable. This white power stuff is just fucking sad, I guess he made his money so who gives a shit?

let's take obama not being born in the us. the birther thing has been on going for almost a decade. within that time, i'm sure people were present with the facts and attempted to be educated about why the president is actually american. yet, still, to this day, even after trump "admitted" that president obama was born american, people persist to believe otherwise.

I have nothing to say at this point outside of the following sentences. Congrats Palmer, you racist piece of shit. Have fun trying to use your golden parachute to escape any and all consequences for being a racist piece of shit. I hope Facebook sues you for everything you're worth for irrevocably damaging THEIR company. Fuck. You.

Its true, and you aren't wrong. People are fucked up and believe all kinds of terrible things.

Like I said, I guess I'm a romanticist who wants to believe the best in people.

This is a good post. Some people are voting on a single issue. Some people are naive about the issues and voting on gut feeling. Some people are voting on charisma. And some feel that trump is just going with a shtick. I'm an ardent Hillary supporter but I'm not going to assume that people voting for trump are scumbags. Not everyone consumes from the same media outlets, or media outlets at all, and we all hear different spins on different issues from within our social media echo chambers. If there's one thing that makes me think Hillary will lose its the failure to try and convince trump supporters to vote Hillary by writing them off as inhuman scum.

He's friends with Milo, the guy's who's so bad he accomplished the very difficult task of being permenately banned by Twitter. The guy that promotes "western supremacy".

He's spending money to bring /r/The_Donald memes into the real world, which are often explicitly about race.

How much smoke does there have to be before saying this guy's views are aligned with the worst part of the Trump phenomenon, and will use the money he makes from oculus to promote them. This is a lot more here than just being a conservative for some other reason while being blind to or not caring about the racist aspects of the movement.

This is why he reeks of immaturity to me. I don't think he was blowing smoke up everyone's ass, I think he wasn't prepared or equipped to deal with those changes. His racist tendencies, if they are there, are another issue altogether, which is also immaturity, the kind that can be life-long for lots of people.

The masses don't give a shit about that though, and if this story gets big enough I suppose it could actually affect their success and reputation as a business, because as I said before, they don't have anything their less-bigoted-appearing competitors don't have either. So I'm watching the fire spread

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I think it's too indirectly supported by your money to be taken that seriously, enough to persuade you tk persue another platform. Of course if the platform you're comparing Oculus to is neck-and-neck, rather than a coin-toss, the political afilliation might come into play but I still doubt it even for the majority of female and minority developers in the market to invest in this.

It's not indirectly supported when Oculus forces you to sell your product through their walled garden and makes money on every purchase (that then goes to supporting hate groups hell bent on making your life miserable).

They actually do not force people to use the Oculus Store. there are plenty of Oculus Rift compatible games (i.e. games that need ReVive to run on Vive) that are only for sale on Steam.

This is in danger of irrevocably damaging the Oculus brand. If this is true, which it seems it is, Palmer is fucked. He's gonna get sued to oblivion. I know I commented a bit on this above but like... the damages of this are real and Facebook almost certainly has grounds for a lawsuit.
