Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

Holy shit, this came completely out of nowhere to me. Lucky always sounded a bit of an asshole buy this is something else. Money and success can turn some people into complete nut jobs.

But is he really a white supremacist or just a trump supporter? And is this not him just joking about it with memes?

Not trying to defend him, just want to know if he really thinks like that our if hes 4chan "role playing"? Also, in that forum post he does not say anything about white supremacy?

Look at his favourited tweets. This isn't a huge surprise - we were taking about it on one of the VR threads a few months ago.

Edit: It was the Nero being banned from Twitter thread

I was so much better off just thinking Palmer Luckey was a bit of a belligerent young business entrepreneur.

I've got my own fair share of disgruntlement with politicians of all ilk in the US and the current state of political rhetoric and process, but the fact that Trump is actually a thing -- a representation of nearly the worst possible outcomes of our political climate -- is extremely disheartening, and it hurts even more to see successful and financially influential people actually falling in line with Trump's message. It's not exactly surprising, mind you -- I wasn't exactly born yesterday and have a perspective that indicates that the nasty attitudes inherit to Trump today have largely belonged to wealthy, influential white people with some sort of chip on their shoulder towards other races, lower classes, etc... -- but I suppose this one hits a little closer to home because despite any ill conceptions I harbored about Palmer Luckey, I did think his product's contribution to the industry was interesting and I wish success on the VR format in general.

So, yeah, sucks. I haven't bought into VR but I guess it's pretty easy to say I won't be buying an Oculus when I get around to it now. :/

Sad part is knowing that even if Trump doesn't win the election, there's been enough of a kick up to burn it into my conscience as a very real, disturbingly large part of the American identity, and it's just been handed a megaphone on a stage that really does matter and not just in the comments sections of popular websites.

Goddamn.

Here's hoping Carmack doesn't agree with any of this rhetoric, frankly I don't care all that much what Luckey believes or is into, but if Carmack agrees or condones any of this, I'm going to be supremely sad.

Unfollowed Luckey, and don't want anything to do with him or a Rift after this. What the fuck, dude?

It will turn out he was the good guy all along. All he was trying to do was damage the Oculus brand enough so people buy the Vive. He knows his own product is not as good so he had to figure a way to get people to stop supporting it.

Fucking genius!

Oh, look. Another fact proving that Palmer is a shitty human, to add to the pile of his lies. I guess being smart can't always help with your character.

I wonder what's Zuckerberg's opinion about his business partner now.

Good guy Luckey, making the choice between Oculus and the Vive easier.

It's scary to think that someone so ignorant has so much power.

Holy shit.

It's odd how long it took for someone to catch on to Luckey's political ties. You would think associating yourself so closely with someone as awful as this woman would have sparked controversy long before today.

Political ties are one thing. Supporting a group that advocates white supremacy with (a?) large monetary contribution is another.

I see people posting "God, what a waste of money!" regarding Luckey using his vast wealth for things as dumb as memes, but that's the modern GOP. Trump is the candidate because he eschewed all conservatism and believed all the racist lies conservatives had historically used in their callous grab for power. Luckey pours his money into memes because to him politics IS memes, not policy.

When Fox News (and now Breitbart, and 4chan, and Reddit) blathers on about far-right conspiracy theories to avoid covering real news, madness becomes the news. Which is why the whole 2016 Presidential Election has had the GOP faceplanting consistently and turning to mug at the camera. It's an episode of Jackass and Luckey is the newest cast member.

Awful, awful people... Both Palmer and his GF. It's really something when you can instantly lose any and all respect you have for someone in an instant, but this is a great example. Liking tweets and posting stupid shit is one thing but to be funding and monetarily endorsing that heinous individual is a slap in the face to everyone Trump has ever trash-talked or insulted.

He's putting in actual money to strip away rights, keep minorities down, and enrich himself even further.

Oh yes, everyone who came from nothing remembers taking sailing lessons, going to college early, and building a six-monitor monster PC during their teenage years.

What is it with these bootstraps dipshits and having no concept of what people who are actually fucking working class actually experience? Kid has never had to live in society and is making a killing selling luxury gadgets and he uses this fortune to fund... more memes? I'm glad I live nowhere near his reality.
I have seen this not only through the news but in person too and it's a quick way for me to realise that the person is a cunt.

Every time these people seem incapable to recognise the privilege that they have had, the benefits and help that they have had throughout their life. In their mind none of that exists and everything they have earned is through hard work and determination.

Every time I have had to listen to people like this it becomes clear that they have absolutely no experience with what it's like to be poor, to have to worry about do you put money on your gas or electric because you can only afford to do one, to have to skip every school trip because you can't afford it, borrowing £17 to go on a trip and taking time to pay it back, to have to get a blazer for school from the school hand me downs etc.

Many times though you can tell that when challenged about this they will agree with you but deep down they think that they still had it bad and that for you to be in the situation you were in you must have somehow deserved it because they are better than you.

Just pure scum and deserve no consideration since they are often willfully dismissive of the truth.

It took so long because of the nature of the organization he was apart of. If this was just the bog standard political donation, it would be quickly picked up.

You can look up financial disclosure right now and see that people like Gabe Newell have donated to Democrats.

Before this, was just hints from iffy tweets that he favorited or retweeted (like from Milo)

I think what blew this up wasn't so much political views as bragging about funding white supremacist memes.

There's being an asshole, and then there's being someone so pathetic even the assholes are shaking their heads at you.

Before today all we had really were his favourited tweets.

If this is the new Jackass, then I really want to see Trump and Luckey kicked in the balls.

So this is definitely true then? Not just some smear campaign?

Because I've found the guy an utterly insufferable bell end since day one, and it'd be nice to know my instincts for spotting arseholes is as sharp as ever.

Wonder how many people here will start selling the Rift and buying the Vive instead.

I don't think it'll come to that - because you can use your Rift without supporting Oculus itself. But I do think that, very rapidly, the shine has come off Oculus in the eyes of the gaming public.

With the price leak for the Touch revealing that a full Oculus Rift is just about the same price as an HTC vive, they really shouldn't be selling themselves as the bad guy.

Aside from the donation thing, if his girlfriend really is that Trump-stan, I'm honestly not sure I'd have much reason not to believe he'd be a Trumpinista as well.

They use direct quotes from him admitting, yes it is him. So it should be true or else they just put out blatant libel that can be legally actionable even in the US, where libel cases are hard to win.

Sorry quick question: how reliable is The Daily Beast and its evidence against Luckey?

They posted direct quotes of him admitting he is that poster and did spend the money, if all of that is false, then its pure libel.

This is the gaming story of the year for me. What a twist.

Well, Hillary is a piece of shit, but you have to be an awful person tu support Trump, and wasting money to fund memes is even more retard.

Facebook has to make him resign or fire him, this is going to damage the Oculus brand a lot.

How long until Facebook turf him out? Or no chance?

He doesn't really do anything of note anymore. He's not a scientist, he's not leading rift development. He's not the president of Oculus, he's not a CEO. He's officially listed as a founder, and best I can tell, he just was moved around from conference to conference as the face of Oculus VR. He's been muted online recently, I venture this will just be the end of us seeing Palmer Luckey when talking about Oculus. I don't think he'll be fired, but I doubt we'll hear from him anymore.

Yeah but I can't make this thing worth a shit unless I give them another $200 for Touch next month. Which in the face of this is a pretty hard sell. Their job of selling me on that at Oculus Connect just got unbelievably difficult.

Carmack's been a hardcore libertarian forever but I don't think he has opinions about other human beings beyond "gee I sure wish this rascally government wouldn't make it so hard for salt-of-the-earth fellas like me to buy more rocket fuel".

Realistically , he only has to ride it out until November and hope for the best right ?

You can grab some Playstation Moves and use them with SteamVR.
