Playstation Portal reviews

Why does this thing exist

It's only capable of streaming PS5 games over local WiFi, so its target market is people who like playing PS5 games, who want to be in a different room in their house when playing those PS5 games. Is being able to play Spider-Man 2 in the bathroom or dining room really worth $200?
From my perspective, we only have 1 TV in the living room and my wife has too many damn shows she seems to have to watch. I can see having this and hanging out without an argument is a good thing. I also think you can take it with you and access your PS5 through remote play anywhere you can get a decent wifi connection (thats kind of cool, but any device today can do it).
A dedicated controller on a decent screen are nice selling points. It's why I'm waiting though. It's either that or a 42" LG C3 (best Buy has it for 899) which is a good price!

It's ridiculous that people have to explain why anyone would spend their own money on something. If it helps you play more games it's worth it. Simple as that. Also, happy wife, happy life

Why would they count it as a con for a device "requires a ps5"
Well no fucking shit. Soon we will see games rated lower because "require ps5.
It's a god damn accessory. not a console

a little extra?
I'll live you that one. The Deck is more expensive.
is more than double the price
More like 150% if you want to go cheaper. You can get one used for 300€ or certified refurbished for 300€ to 380€.
for adequate storage a "little extra" no thanks.
It is easily upgradeable by microSD or swapping the SSD. Even the 64gb Deck version offers more in terms of storage than the Portal.

No, get Chiaki running and stream the PS4/5 to the Deck, just like Portal does
and have an hour battery life.
No, while using Chiaki the Deck can stream your games 5-6 hours
provide me with some info, show me where im wrong.
Hope that helped.
Of course, at first the Deck seems to be more expensive, but if you think about it you can use it just like the Portal and have way more opportunities on your backhand. Native games you already purchased on steam and other platforms, emulators, with a docking station even a full desktop experience.

so you have alternate solutions, some not even feasible in my country. Also, im not using Chiaki to use remote play on a more expensive device, thats silly.

Steam deck in Canada is $859 for the 256 gb version , the PS Portal is $270. I don't buy refurbished ever. It's just not a good option.

Why it is so expensive in Canada?

Okay, that's your personal opinion and not facts. Aside from that opinion you could totally use the Deck to stream your PS4/5 games for over 5 hours, and not just 1 hour like you claimed.

Edit:

What exactly is silly about using Chiaki?

The sad thing is they'll see this as even more reason to never release a successor to the vita.

Had this been focused around native games (even if digital only), it would have been awesome.

All great questions, Canada is unlivable at this point. If i go into it it'll be political so i won't but everything's expensive here right now

I'd rather use proprietary remote play, open source is good if i have no other options but i can spend $270 on something that allows me to play my games i already own over wifi and my PS5 is always on rest mode

I seriously doubt that's true, lol. You'd try it with a couple $100 bills in it for 5 minutes of your time. 😄

Couple hundred isn't a lot. Couple hundred and I can play for a few minutes while on the toilet, maybe, but genuine free time? No thanks. Not enough money to waste time on this crap.

So you'd complain if your hammer doesnt saw wood?
Device tied to PS5 made by the designer/maker of PS5 streaming games from PS5 does it at a quite poor input lag. You see no problem with that... 🤷‍♂️...

If you give a rubber toy hammer to John Henry you can expect him to be disappointed when he expected a real hammer :p.

Throwing input lag on there now? I thought the issue was that all it did was stream games? But, no, I don't see a problem with Remote Play, we know exactly what it is and how it works as we have had it since the PS3, the only difference here is that networks have improved since then to lower the lag and we now have it with comfortable full controls on a large screen (compared to Vita).

Now? My only comment was about its “you have one job” thing which is how well it does the job it is supposed to do.

For its price and considering Sony owns the entire stack we can demand better. What is the problem with that?

Sorry, replying to so many people, thought you was going on about the single use of the Portal, wrong person, my bad (it's easy at my age)

Anyway, as for lag, is that not to be expected across a network? The whole purpose is to be able to us anywhere in the house so direct connection isnt really feasible (I mean you could, but then you'd have to be a certain distance from the PS5, just like Wii U's 8 meters). But is Remote Play any worse than other game streaming? They have been working on Remote Play for a long time, this device is just tapping into that, it isn't using any new streaming technology, maybe it's just at the limits of what is available now at a decent price.

I suppose you spend your precious time doing other highly evolved things like playing video games on phones, playing video games on switch, playing video games on other portables, playing video games on TV, and watching TV and movies. I mean if that's true, I can see why this is beneath your time.

What are you talking about? The 1 TB OLED steam deck is selling for C$819 in Canada. The 256 GB version is going for C$499.

You wouldn’t need a PS5 if it supported cloud streaming. That’s probably the point they’re trying to make.

Got mine earlier today. I'm actually pleasantly surprised, it works much better than i expected with my 300 mb connection. It is more stable than the remote play app and the streaming quality is better too.

The device itself is very comfortable to hold, much better than a backbone or even the Switch. It has a nice glossy screen. It's not comparable to an OLED TV but more than good enough. I think it's quite a bit better than the og Switch screen.

The dual sense is pretty much identical to the regular one. I think the thumbsticks are slightly smaller but that's it.

So yeah, i,m happy so far. I can't go back to phone streaming.
