PS5 Pro owners, how silent is your unit? Any noticeable Coil Whine?

I'll have to check after work today. Haven't had a chance to play anything.

My OG PS5 has very noticeable coil whine, but then again I sit like 3 feet away from it.

It's quite clear from this thread that people need to take the hearing test using the AirPods Pro 2 that Apple released with iOS 18.1.

In addition, if you have a large room with a higher sound floor due to ambient sound, you won't hear your PS5 Slim/Pro easily. In my quiet office, my OG PS5 was VERY quiet, but coil whine was noticeable without sound on. The Series X sets the STANDARD for quiet consoles, - it's magnificent. The Slim is NOISY AF the moment you start a game - any game, and it drove me nuts. My Pro is here any day now, but I expect it to be as noisy as the Slim. If you're sensitive to this, well, we'll have to learn how to deal with it because it's clear from the Slim at least that Sony does not care about console acoustics.

Gotta say I was slightly worried about the fan/coil whine after seeing a few videos. My original PS5 had coil whine, but the fan wasn’t noticeable. The Pro so far to my surprise has a slightly louder fan, but no coil whine. I don’t notice the fan unless I’m right next to the console, and the audio from games is enough that I don’t even notice it.

Some coil whine when I get close during games. While gaming the fan definitely kicks up to a noticable noise. That being said though with it inside my backless cabinet with the front door slightly ajar instead of of just open I don't hear it at all and the PS5 stays plenty cool and we'll ventilated. Menu is silent all around.

Mine is whisper quiet. Fans pick up a little playing Resi 4 remake but you can hardly hear them. The disc drive is surprisingly quiet when watching films as well! Sony did good with this console!

I don't care about normal fan noise, I just hope I won't get that high pitched shit I had on my most playstations. Anyone hearing that high pitched or UFO type sound like you used to call it? Good to hear that there are many users without coil whine or at least it isn't that bad.

On the other hand, I remember threads like this where everything was silent/inaudible... I can only pray i guess.

The Ufo Sound was easy fixable with a high quality NMB fan.

Xbox gets it right because they keep things simple and slap a large ass desktop grade fan in there. Only has a handful of fan blades.

PS5's fan is more akin to a laptop in terms of design. Has like 20 blades or something.

I think I have like the most well built PS5, shout out to the Chinese guy who put it together. It was totally silent. I do think my Pro is more like a normal system in terms of how it operates. Very quiet, nothing like the PS4 Pro vacuum cleaner, but not silent.

In my case, I think the coil whine is a bit quieter than the launch PS5, but it's still there. And I feel like the fan noise is a bit more audible on the Pro, which makes sense I guess.

Edit: Crap, I missed "Pro" in the thread title. I thought this was about all PS5s. Please ignore.

I never had any issues with coil whine on any electronics until I got my launch PS5. It sits on my desk next to my monitor, so I'm close enough that it would be really annoying, but I use headphones for my PS5 and PC.

I don't know what causes coil whine, but I assume it's the fan? If I played it more (rarely ever) and didn't use headphones, I'd be looking to buy a better quality aftermarket fan to solve that problem.

Yup, plus the Series X embraces the whole function over form approach - heat rises and the fan simply pulls out the hot air upwards, drawing in cold air from the very bottom and the back of the console.

PlayStation 5 cooling is a mystery to me because they clearly chose style over substance and yet the console itself is subjectively not very good looking nor small. They even had to employ Liquid Metal instead of thermal paste and a a super beefy heatsink in the OG version to ensure it does not overheat. One other thing could be that Sony’s engineers are super conservative when it comes to operating temperatures and run their fans at higher rpms than they need to as a precaution.

Don't forget quick resume so you can jump in and out of 7 single player games and eneloops so your controllers last 75 years. Haven't heard much about their bc program for a while.....

It’s not the fan, it’s coils within the PSU that are not properly dampened - they start resonating proportional to the power draw that the console uses. That is why the frequency of the whine changes depending on the frame rate.

Do you know if the PSU is a part that just plugs into the board? If so, it seems like I could replace it with a third party unit if I really wanted to, right? (I'm not going to do that, but it would be nice to know if the option is available)

Not worth it as there’s no guarantee that the new power supply will have less coil whine. We should not have to do this - buy third party fans, open up our consoles, change PSUs etc. Sony should simply get their act together, tighten their manufacturing tolerances and improve their quality control.

The process of changing PSUs is also not trivial nor cheap. Easier to return the console and play the lottery again.

Oh well. Sony could also have their components produced by well-known manufacturers instead of the usual foxconn nidec or delta junk. Neither the fans nor the power supply are of so-called Pro quality. In reality it is just modified junk that is also installed in the PS5 slims. No idea where the money goes but certainly not into the components.

I have no concerns with China-based manufacturing as my last 3 iPhones were made there and have literally had zero issues. Heck, could have even been Foxconn. It’s Sony who tells these subcontractors what manufacturing tolerances they are expecting and what level of quality control to implement. At the end of the day, it feels like Sony is simply cutting corners and increasing their profit margins at our expense. I accepted the fact that my launch unit PS5 has very loud coil whine because it was made during early days of Covid and because its fan was very quiet. Sony has no excuses left after churning out these for 4 years - all the kinks should have been ironed out by now.

If I put my ear beside it I hear something. In real world useage with my home theater system/headphones- nothing. My PC is louder.

Well, I for once seem like I won the lottery - it's like the console is not even powered on dammit which is a nice surprise - it's pretty much dead silent like my XSX used to be.

And yes, I've played 120Hz games and still not a peep.

In contrast, my Fat PS5, while still generally quiet, used to have an audible sound when sitting close to it (Don't know if it was coil whine or the fans).

About the same sound level as my PS5 Phat, maybe a little lower. (aka. a soft fan noise if the room is very quiet)

No coil whine. I never noticed that from my Phat either.

Just got my Pro. Far quieter than the Slim. Not quite as quiet as the OG PS5. It does a slow fan ramp up when starting a game rather than a fast spin up like the Slim. Coil whine isn’t noticeable over fan sound, but it’s there if you’re putting your ear up against the console (who does that?).

So far much happier with the acoustics compared to the Slim. Series X is still the quiet king.

Quiet. Very. Hear a smidge of airflow, but only if I'm right up on it. Literally, ear less than a few inches away! It's lovely, like my OG PS5 is, except without that very slight buzz (again, only if you are less than a few inches away)! Both have been just about as quiet as my Series X.

Yep it's on par with the original PS5, and significantly quieter than the Slim, which I'm SO grateful for. No regrets selling the Slim.

True story. I used to believe the whole vertical thermals bit too. But its a myth. I was educated by an engineer who told me it makes no difference as the fan pressure is such that it moves the air the same whether it was vertical or horizontal. So I now have my XSX horizontal and its identical in its fan noise and seems just as efficient.

OG PS5 owner, my PS5 is as dead silent now as it was when i first got it years back. And thats after long gaming sessions. The only thing i hear and i have to put my ear right near the back of the console is a slight fan sound.

Same. This is the first time I have seen anyone mention any sort of noise with the PS5. Mine has always been incredibly silent.

I think I have found the most comprehensive analysis/solution for this problem.

Skip to 24:40 for the summary.

The air flow design dries the joint soldering. Previously, others found that adding silicone between capacitors added inulsation, reducing the sound sometimes. However, this didn't work for many. The reason for this is because they focused solely on one or two components - the actual solution, according to this video explanation, is 'reflow every surface mount pad on the entire board'. Good news, you don't need to remove or replace anything. Bad news, it is time consuming.

Absolutely shocking stuff from SONY engineers here.

Oh mine, the disc drive cover did not have perfect tolerances. Towards the bottom outside of the console, there was a small gap between the bottom plastic cover and it’s mating point on the drive/console. Caused a small vibration noise when the disc spun up and down. I shimmed the tab with three layers of electrical tape, just enough to fill the gap, and the tape will absorb vibration. I did this by building the tape up one layer at a time until there was no gap. It appears to have repaired the issue. Easy fix. Maybe a 1mm gap where the plastic cover had a little gap between the disc drive and the cover itself when installed.

These things aren’t screwed in, they snap in, and they are made of plastic. Furthermore, it hinges in, instead of sliding in like the PS5 og did, and because the covers are segmented, there are less opportunities for a snap in system to ensure perfect fit. it is a lot, a lot, a lot easier to take the plates on and off on the pro than it is the original PS five, but that has downsides obviously this being it. I don’t say cheap and rattly, but…. I think the original PS five had incredible build quality, after seeing this thing. I’m assuming they’ve just figured out how to save money but it certainly doesn’t have the premium feel of the original, just being honest. I do not dock it any points for this, because it does not matter. I’m glad they save that money and spend it on the graphics card.

I did not notice it on assembly. You could press inward on the outside corner of the disc drive cover plate and it would flex in a little(it was properly seated, so it should not have flexed at all). I could flex it inward about 1mm and it would flex into place, but if you took tension off, it would go back out the millimeter and just kinda hover there, causing the minor rattle when the disc spun up or down. The tab itself, clicks in audibly and is tactile, but it has a small gap that made it do a very minor vibration noise. If I had set it horizontally, the weight of the console I assume would have pressed in and removed the gap, so it would not have occurred….so I should’ve probably just did that instead, but I’m a Dapper Dan man. I would never have noticed if not for the noise.
