Rumor: Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Controller C Button Will Allow System to Connect to the Original Switch to Use as Second Screen

I don’t count on that, sounds terribly pro-consumer, and that’s Nintendo we are talking about.
The thing I hated with Switch was the fact very few games let you play multiplayer with joy cons , everything required fucking regular controller.

I don't think they're going to integrate the Switch 1 like this. If they follow this general concept I think it's more likely that the Switch 2 will cast to TV (possibly through the dock) and then also act as it's own controller/secondary screen.

They've put a button on the front that that connects the Switch 2 to an old Switch 1? Why? That could be an option in the Switch menu for how unlikely you'd be doing that. Also why would I play on my Switch 2 if my OLED Switch 1 can be used instead? I don't get this rumor.

Ok, but why a button dedicated for that?
A screen prompt would be enough.
I can't see Nintendo adding a button for a non gameplay thing.

A year ago I said it would use two screens.

Using two screens might mean we might get DS and 3DS games on the NSO. That would be worth it just for that.

Personally, I still think it's a "cast" button. We'll find out for sure in a few days.

It would be crazy for Nintendo, but what if you can cast the second screen to things other than a Switch 1? Maybe they release a smart phone app that supports the function as well for those that don't have a Switch 1. That could possibly explain why this needs a separate button instead of being an in menu function

I do think this button is for some form of local wireless functionality. Like a sort of spiritual successor to Download Play on the DS/3DS, only with other systems streaming the game instead of downloading it. I don't know about using an OG Switch as a secondary display though...

If it casts to the dock then you could easily play some dual screen Wii U games like Nintendoland and Wii Party U.

DS/3DS games don't make sense.

What if casting let your Switch be used to play a local multiplayer Switch 2 games with a Switch 2 owner?

Maybe the C stands for "community" or "Chat/Communicate".

that is the most promising theory, however it would be kinda weird. why label it as C?
for buttons like that you'd expect a symbol not a letter. and there are many symbols to choose from.
a little speech bubble, or a little person

the Switch's home button is a little house, and the capture button is the typical circle/dot 🔴 usually associated with recording.

so I wonder if it's something that's really hard to depict as a little icon.

I was thinking of "Community" because of how many things it could entail. Like chat, some kind of Miiverse screenshot thing and newsfeed, friendlist etc.

true, but I think a little person icon would fit well with a community button.

maybe they thought it would be hard to identify the icon and opted for the C instead, I could see that.
because it's a pretty small button for sure, so who knows how well a small person or a speech bubble would look at that size

I really miss Miiverse ;)

It could also stand for Connect, as in "Nintendo Connect". This could be a hub of all things social like a newsfeed, a feed where you can post screenshots and video's, chat, friends etc.
That’s a good theory imo. They’ve been on that kind of track recently I feel, bringing out stuff like Nintendo Music and the new “Today!” news feed thing.

I could definitely see them including and expanding on things like that on Switch 2.

This would actually be pretty cool. I imagine it's technically feasible as the Wii U gamepad just used a mangled version of wifi to communicate with the console, which had a tiny chip built into the motherboard to handle communication. The Switch 2 could just do the same, or do it in the same way as the PlayStation Portal.

It's obvious Nintendo knows pretty much everyone already owns a Switch so the idea of re-using that as a peripheral is clever. They already set the precedent for that with how the hundreds of millions of Wiimotes could be re-used on the Wii U. There are also plenty of Wii U ports for the Switch. I imagine Nintendo could patch these or provide an upgrade path of sorts to restore the old gamepad functionality.

OK it is actually a Costume change button. Whether you have a Mii or Mario or Smash fighter or Splatoon character or MK driver or the Villager in AC...press C and your outfit changes. HOld C and the Costume menu pops up - game/character dependent.

Could work for system menus and more seamless gameplay, but terrible if you want it portable. Probably a better idea to keep it simple after what happened with the WiiU

I predict that C button will connect the switch to the Dock and pull a reverse WiiU on us. It'll render the main game on the TV and the Switch screen becomes the secondary screen. Adding to the whole "controller can be a mouse" thing, in this mode the Switch screen is *not* just a touch screen for what it's displaying, but instead behaves like a trackpad mouse for the game running on the TV.

Obviously some wires got crossed here, funny in hindsight to see that second screen casting is true but not in the way the leaker thought
