People should not forget that a console releasing in let’s say like the next Xbox in 2026 , must be in production already 1 year before release if they want to have a meaningful number of consoles on the market. And way earlier than the production the final hardware must be finalized. That means next Xbox will be RDNA3 or RDNA3+.the top card of AMD is the 7900xtx which has 60 TF is clocked at 2,3 GHz and watt usage of 355 Watt and it’s already on 5nm.Samsung will have 2nm start of 2025, TSMC is at 3 nm.there is not much room to reach the TF of the 7900xtx for Xbox in 2025.
RDNA4 is rumoured to release in late 2024, no reason why an Xbox next would use less than RDNA4.
And remember, AMD would give Xbox early access to RDNA4, so it's not RDNA4 launch date + 1 year of Xbox production = Xbox next launch date.

Dev kits must be on their way to third-party developers as we speak per Tom Henderson's original report ("late November").

Early December is going to be a fun time between The Game Awards, the GTA VI trailer and probably some additional PS5 Pro spec leaks based on the dev kits.

This is what I was expecting. Using 5/4 nm a rumored 32WGP chip (like Navi 48 BTW) should be about the size of 7nm 20WGP PS5 APU.

PS4 Pro APU was smaller than PS4 launch APU end it had twice the number of CUs. This won't even be the case here (it'll have about 50% more CUs), this time they'll use overclocking to reach their Tflops / performance goals.

2025/2026 release doesn't make a lick of sense.

Node shrinks won't be significant until 2028 at the earliest vs 2024

This is a stop the bleed situation this console might not be much more powerful than PS5 Pro but it will be ahead in innovation & have a chance to get a headstart for next generation software.

AI chips will be on board so they will be able to sale a different experience until PS6 comes along but that's only if Switch 2 doesn't beat them to it

Am I the only one who thinks the next gen didn't even started properly and yet the pro console is here ?
There is not 1 game where I'm blown away by this is truly next gen yet and here we are at midgen refreshes.

If this gen lasts until 2028...thats plenty of time for 'truly next gen games' to come out and get played.

Hell, games cross gen with PS5/PS6 will still be truly next gen. Prepare for next gen to have an extended cross gen period too.

You living in the future? The PS5 Pro likely doesn't arrive for an entire year.

As for being "blown away", that's 100% subjective. Many others have been blown away by a variety of games this gen. What's not subjective is that many games have performance and fidelity modes that the gamers are forced to choose from, whereas the Pro can combine both into a best of both worlds offering. Or it can punch even further above that with some of the enhancements that go into PC versions of the games. Or it could help PSVR2 versions target native res 90/120Hz modes more often.

Regarding cross gen, keep in mind that Sony's first party cross gen period was supposed to just last 1 year til the end of 2021, but it got extended to the end of 2022 because of the pandemic. GT7, HFW and GOW Ragnarok were all supposed to land in 2021.

I would expect they'll aim for something similar with the PS6 where the first year will have multiple cross gen games with the PS5 and then afterwards it'll be next gen only except for some live service games.

Shame I know, but we should really be keeping our expectations in check as its only a mid-gen refresh.

Makes sense. I wonder how much uplift we can expect from boosted Zen2 clocks? Also more curious on GPU side if ray traversal is a lock. If so, that in and of itself will be a major boost.

Bad news from what I gather, but all of the following is based on dubious sources.

Supposedly still using Zen 2 but with higher clocks. (RGT)

MLiD claims that the ray tracing uplift of RDNA 4 over 3 is modest - can't remember his exact words but he didn't sound too excited - dude has a clear bias towards AMD so if he's not excited about it then you know its bad.

Keplar did claim that the Pro chip may be using RDNA 4 technology but given that RT won't even get a huge boost in RDNA 4 I question whether it has hardware acceleration for ray-traversal.

All this being said, as long as the Pro can at least double raster and ray-tracing performance then we're in for a solid upgrade.

Imagine Death Stranding 2 on the PS5 Pro....

I know, but I still hope that Sony doesn't do the absolute bare minimum with it, as it was the case with the PS4 Pro.

I really wish we get something closer to what the Xbox One X represented last generation, as having a $500 console being able to run high-end games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, The Division 2 or Anthem at a native 4K resolution was incredibly impressive back then.

When do you guys think Project Trinity/PlayStation 5 Pro will be announced?

CES 2024 should be next month, and that's where Sony unveiled PSVR2 last year and the Access Controller this year. Then, I believe comes GDC in March. After that it could during either a Showcase or at Summer Games Fest, at the latest. Them announcing the Pro on a random Tuesday on the PS Blog or in an interview with Wired is also likely possibility.

You need to get away from that mindset that "we havnt even seen what these consoles can do; next gen still hasn't arrived". We more or less know now exactly what these consoles can do. We see where their limits are all the time. They're not capable of high resolutions at 60 fps in a reasonably demanding, modern game.

Performance modes by and large suffer from bad image quality. Alan Wake 2 and FF16 are perfect examples. These are next gen games with poor iq even in fidelity mode (ff16 iq is OK even tho it's quite soft). Neithet of these games even have Ray Tracing to worry about! Most console games either don't have RT or have a very weak form of it (like half or quarter res rt reflections). We'll never see Cyberpunk looking the way PC owners see it because the consoles arent capable of even getting rt relections (something key to the neon soaked look of Night City), let alone RT Global illumination (something vital to nect gen lighting going forward), and that's despite Cyberpunk running at 30 fps!

Just look at a bunch of demanding games. There's a clearly defined pattern of where these consoles come up against limits. Either we get a nice looking fidelity mode or a poor iq performance mode (sometimes poor iq fidelity too). In the rare case of a game that has an impactful RT implementation such as Spiderman 2, notice they couldn't push the graphics too far above the cross gen Miles Morales.

Now that most games are releasing as next gen only, we're not seeing that "secret sauce" that myself and many others hoped for unlock. UE5 games are struggling on these consoles. Best case scenario is a game like Robocop, which truly does look next gen with nanite and lumen working well, but that's highly linear and only really reaches those highs in its 30 fps mode.

The longer it takes for a mid gen refresh , the less likely we'll ever get to play games like Cyberpunk, Avatar, and Alan Wake 2 in their glory. We'll get a little resolution boost if they have DRS in place, but most devs are not going to bother updating these games via patches when a mid gen system arrives. We still haven't seen some games optimized for ps5/sx that could've easily been updated for 60 fps. Time is of the essence.

7900xtx/4090 PC my man. Otherwise, console will always be bound by limits.

I will say that I have yet to play a 60fps game where the image quality made it unplayable. You will always have compromise.

i just want 4K/60 with RT

I want upscaled 4k from whatever resolution they need to use SO LONG AS they maintain good image quality with rt gi and reflections at 60 fps. I don't expect settings to be Ultra and I don't expect the base resolutions to be as high as PC, but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for this from mid gen refreshes.

This thread needs a bump. Leaks have been limited but the overall outlook with regards to specs seems little tepid.

With reveal of GTA VI, there’s only one wish. For Pro to have a competent performance mode.

This would be tough, ngl. And, with the overall density in the trailer, animations on NPCs, the physics, AI. It might genuinely be CPU bound.

I keep thinking why people care about A PS5 Pro if Sony can't release some games or at least talk about theirs plans.

Maybe, but I don't think it's a given that these systems are CPU driven. Much of the ML muscle deformations and physics are run on the GPU.

The regular consoles seem to be running the game at 1440p with FSR2 at 50-60fps already per the leaked in-game footage from December 2nd. So a performance mode on Series X and PS5 seems like a lock.

Now the real question is how much better the game will get on the Pro. On PS5, quality mode seems like it'll target 4K with FSR2 at 30fps with potentially full raytracing (global illumination, reflections, shadows, ambient oclussion), so maybe the Pro's quality mode will do native 4K at 30fps with higher quality full RT or upscaled 4K at 60fps with limited RT.

It's insane how everyone just completely ignores this.

There's the other Thread filled with people claiming it's going to be 1080p and sub-30fps..

And based off of absolutely nothing as if they know the bottlenecks of Rockstars engine. This ain't UE5.

IIRC, rumblings regarding a Pro started in late 2015 around November. And, specs had leaked by GDC in March 2016.

Once smaller devs start receiving the devkits (which should be happening by now), we should hear more hints. And, in 2-3 months time by GDC we should know the specs.

Hopefully Rockstar talked with Sony what they need in the Pro to achieve 60fps in GTAVI. GTA VI will be one of the most imported games of all time.

Otherweise there's no point for me to buy the Pro because I can't stand 30fps on my OLED.

Well, in the worst case scenario, I'll upgrade my gaming PC.🤷🏼‍♂️

Was really hoping for a Zen4c or something close, the impact on die space/cost/complexity would have been minimal and yet offered a major advantage. It'd be the difference between many games offering 30/40fps and 60fps.

If it's just Zen2 with a small clock boost, it looks like this is mostly going to be a more native pixels + more RT box.
