Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Ebay seems to be having a flood of PSIV right now. There are at least 5 copies CIB. The best ones, that includes the flyers, are in the $ 80 range however.

But I am glad I did not grab it last time. I spend too much in my last Genesis lot, now I have to heal my wallet. I know that is the right moment to buy PSIV it will be more expensive in the future, but I need to wait for a few months.

Yeah. I put in a reasonable best offer on it considering the condition and didn't even get a response. Not sure why they even bothered posting it with the best offer option. Either way, I don't have the game but I'll probably just find it locally if nobody's willing to make a deal in the world of eBay. I've got plenty to play until I find it.

I almost got a complete the other day for 30 bucks. Almost lol.

Then again the seller didnt have any images of the cartridge, just the box...so maybe it was for the best.

gaf help: I contacted the seller from that lot again (very nice guy) to double check the games for imperfections (since I am paying quite a lot for the lot). I asked about the pins if there any rusty or brownish on them. He replied that the pins are fine, only the PCB is brownish. He send me a picture (quite burry) but he told me that is not rusty brownish, just brownish. As far I can see from the picture, the PCB seems to be naturally brownish. I quite do not remember if all Genesis games has green pcb boards or they did use other colors. Is there something I should know about PCB conservation? Something that I should be aware and ask the seller? Or they just use PCBs that are naturally in brownish color in the Genesis carts?

Edited: looking online for Genesis carts PCB images, it seems that while the board is green the part with the contacts are white/yellowish clear. Is this brownish thing something I should worry about? Some kind of aging?

Edited: looking around in the web it seems that I am safe. The only concern is the connectors. The PCB colour seems to be whitish/yellowish/brownish in the region of the connectors.

You're fine! You'd have to actively try to rust carts enough to turn them into duds. Even with rust I've cleaned "dead" carts back to life. An yeah, brown can just be the color where the pins meet the rest of the circuit board.

They should be fine. I've revived some games that haven't been played in years with a little bit of water and a Q tip. Some people prefer rubbing alcohol. Sometimes it takes about 4 or 5 Q tips though.

Dammit!
My copy of Phantasy Star IV arrived, but there was no one home to sign it!

Getting a little excited!!

Get hyped. I was really pumped that a nice dude around my area sold me a copy of Shining Force 1 and Phantasy Star IV complete, with very minimal damage to the box for PSIV, for 75 bucks flat. I just had to drive 15 minutes, totally worth it for one of the best games on the system.

Now, its been a while since i got my itch, but i live near a city in NY called Rochester, which has about 7 locally owned game shops called Game Craze, and they do all systems. I spend around 100 dollars, but here is my haul.

tumblr_mn4a126E8u1qmfnago1_500.jpg

From left to right, top to bottom, it's: Fighting Masters, Pocohontas, Outrun 2019, Battle Squadron
Mansion of Hidden Souls (Sega CD), Red Zone, Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter, Crack Down, Ultimate Qix, Bonkers, Power Rangers: The Movie
Battletech, Marble Madness, Fatal Labyrinth, Gadget Twins, Math Blasters, Phantom 2049, Art of Fighting
Thunder Force 2, Cyberball, Virtual Pinball, Street Smart, World Of Illusion, and The Humans

Besides Art of Fighting and Cyberball, everything is CIB and in great condition. Cyberball and Art Of Fighting are CIB, but the manuals are pretty rough (Art Of Fighting's box is pretty rough too)

i have a genesis 3 but it keeps freezing on me. I think the problem has to do with the cartridge slot. If i touch the game slightly, or console moves a bit it will immediately freeze. Even if im not touching it or moving it with the controller cable its so sensitive it just freezes randomly. Has anyone have or know what this issue is or how to fix it? Could it just be its dirty in there and when it moves it disconnects, looks pretty clean as is? Was thinking of taking it apart and looking at it to see if there were any obvious things i could see wrong with it.

ok i looked up some stuff and cleaned the pins and its now working and i can jiggle to cartridge and move the system and its working fine. All it needed was to be cleaned ! I had 2 others that were "broken" a fat which i think had to do something with the start button which i see there are fixes for. Also a 2 which i forget what its problem was, probably just needed a cleaning too. Hopefully it stays this way when its completely dry.

^helluva haul for $100, gunstar!

the one upside to ebay boning sellers these days (and this is also why im now comfortable buying out of state over craigslist to) is that as a buyer, you have all the power; you can reverse a charge & send shit back if its not to your liking, and the seller kinda has to deal. if i pay a premium and something wasn't properly disclosed? i wouldn't hesitate...now see this $20 blue game gear, this dude failed to mention the angles of visibility on it, but then it was $20 shipped with a few games so i kinda knew what i was in for, heh

It is even worse when the seller setup ebay automatic responses for the offers and appears to accept nothing more than a $ 0.50 discount... Why botter? Ebay limits your offers to three to each item, and sometimes I reach the limit with reasonable offers.

oh man those dudes are such a waste of time, i hate that. what's even dumber is wasting 3 attempts at someone who clearly doesn't want any offer below selling cost, and like 10 minuets later 3 emails from ebay reminding me i was rejected

LMAO. In my experience Amazon's "Very Good" is subjective. It runs the gamut from practically new to awful.

maaaaaaaaan you guys

hang-tags belong on display in kmart or pharmor or something! they look ridiculous when lined up on a bookshelf like a good genesis collection should be...haha i guess i'm in the minority here, but there's so many i bought back this year & had to neuter before making them mine

Any Genesis game I bought since launch back in the day had its tag bent and removed cleanly before I even booted up the cart. As you said, they would look ridiculous on a shelf and not functional for stacking either.

I need to dig out my games sometime and take some pics. Loved my Genesis. Including the $20 copy of MUSHA I bought at EB over 20+ years ago...my favorite shooter of all time. :)

The only games that aren't CIB are ones I grabbed at Funcoland in the late 90's on the cheap for my Nomad.

^doesnt amazon say very good = box but maybe no manual or something? if a seller puts it in the wrong bracket, i'd return it. it's troublesome, but at least you have an out!

If you've got a Playstation 2 capable of playing Japanese games, I'd recommend Phantasy Star Complete Collection. It has 1-4 (with English translations) + Gaiden (untranslated).

I got ya beat man. I paid $9.95 for my MUSHA 20 years ago. :)

I am a fan of the tags. It's part of the box! I don't tear them off. You just bend them forward for stacking on top. That's how they came boxed when we got them new at EB back then.

The only Sony or Microsoft i own is PSP!
I always went SEGA and Nintendo for consoles, don't really know why!

Is Phantasy Star Gaiden the Gamegear version of PS1 or its a completely different game?

I might just be able to join you in appreciating old Sega stuff. A friend's uncle has decided to offload allof his old gamey stuff he's had lying around the house forever, and offered for me to come around and have a look and make an offer.

I've been to his house in the past, and specifically remember there being at least a Mega Drive and Sega CD, plus I assume an assortment of games.

Rygar is tearing through the Renovation catalog and i'm mad jealous!

also, Ninja Catfish, please update with what you find - i love stories like that man. i hit up my buddies on the block growing up for genesis games; one sold his, the other can't find them yet but gave me MMX2 & a few dozen SNES games, basement/attic treasures are just the best...especially when they're the copies you grew up playing!

Success! Went over to the guy's place, and had a few hours of nostalgic Sega fun while we tested out all the carts and such.
$100 got me this!

Road Avenger also has Cobra Commander in the case, with the title on the other side of the case. Most of the carts work, found a couple that wouldn't start, but I'm sure after a little bit of cleaning I can revive them.

So yeah, quite happy with the find :D

you sonofabitch

it cost me easily 2x as much to replace 80% of that, haha...a model 1 with a buncha classics, congrats man!

not to encourage piracy but when you weep @ snatcher prices, bear in mind Sega-CD comes from that era where CD-R's aren't blocked...the more you know!

Does anyone remember Alien Soldier?. It was one of the craziest and most intense schmups i ever played. I never managed to clear it at the time so i'mgoing to have to give that a shot soon.

Testing out Sonic 1 was super noticeable. The music was just sooooo slooooow. I hear you can reasonably easily mod the console to speed it up though, so I might possibly look into that.

Sonic 2 and Knuckles seemed to play more or less how I remember them from playing 60Hz versions, I guess they must be 'optimised'.

I must remember Alien Soldier better than you because it definitely wasn't an STG

How would you describe it then? side scrolling shooter? it does'nt have to be exactly like r-types to be a schmup.

Alien Soldier is an action game. Contra or Metal Slug aren't STGs either. They're Run 'n Guns or Action Platformers/Action Shooters.

Also, there is no c in shmup lol (it's a portmanteau of shoot-em-up)
