Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Anyone ever printed Sega CD covers from the Cover Project? I've done SNES/NES/64 covers for universal game cases, but never anything that just used normal DVD cases.

I suppose I should be able to ask for the same thing at Staples, legal size paper, no resizing? Any guesses?

Most games don't even have software region lockout, so you can use it as a passthrough device so you don't have to cut up the console case to fit import carts. For the region-locked games, use Game Genie codes to bypass the protection.

Golden Axe 3 or Rainbow Islands need a code? I know Bare Knuckle 3 does.

The The Mega Drive Sailor Moon the same as the first SNES one with co-op removed? The box art is identical, lol.

They share some assets, but are very different games. The Mega Drive game has some extra moves, such as super jumps (and super jump kicks!) and character specific specials, which aren't in the Super Famicom one. They also have different levels (some sections are similar, though), music, and bosses.
You can also pick up a paper fan (maybe other stuff, too?) to attack enemies with. The Super Famicom one doesn't have any weapon pick ups.

But yeah, there's no multiplayer, unfortunately.

According to this...

http://www.gamefaqs.com/genesis/916377-genesis/faqs/60595

...Golden Axe III does, but it doesn't mention Rainbow Islands. The code for Golden Axe III should be BT7T-CA9E + AA7T-CA9R, according to Whip Ass Gaming, which is where I found the code for Sailor Moon.

Speaking of which, anyone else have any JP imports they can recommend that wont exactly break the bank? I know i've asked before, but figured i'd ask again since the audience is much better than what it was. early on.

MD is pretty dicey when it comes to this. I mean, most of the best games thankfully saw North American releases, but the good games that did not tend to price on the high end of the spectrum. Off the top of my head, a cheap, good JP exclusive is Puyo Puyo 2/Tsuu (the first Puyo Puyo kinda made it over as Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, but 2 is exclusive).

Just ordered a fairly pristine complete copy of Dynamite Headdy for $35. Not sure if that's a good price or not, but they're hard enough to find complete. Now I just need to find a good Genesis lot that I can pick up. It's so hard for me to decide on lots on Ebay. I can never find one that looks like a decent bundle. Dynamite Headdy is my favorite Genesis game I'll probably never legitimately beat!

I'm going to try and slowly build a complete/boxed Genesis collection. Starting out again with a Treasure game so that's always good. Next up on my list are copies of Rocket Knight Adventure, Shinobi III, LandStalker, and Ristar.

That's definitely on the high end for Headdy but it sounds like you're happy with the condition it's in so I guess that's all that matters.

Pickings were slim. Most didn't come with the manual and I wanted a complete copy. I'm sort of on a journey to collect complete copies of all Treasure games now lol!

can't recommend Battle Mania 2/Trouble Shooter 2 enough as an import, but i did the repro for it

yeah, it's the same as printing any others for DVD boxes - Saturn, PS2 etc

There are some games that came heavily changed in the west and worth checking for their original incarnation. From the top of my mind Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibouken (which gave birth to Decapattack in the west, but the original is so charming), D.J.Boy (which was heavily censored in the west) among others. Puyo Puyo is also more charming than Dr. Robotinick MBM.

I think it is a good price. I am also starting to build up again my Genesis collection, but I am very restrictive. I want really CIB games, with not only the manual but with also with the posters, flyers and folders that came with the games. It takes a while to find in good condition and the prices are highers, but that is me.

I just ordered a copy of Rocket Knight Adventure in that condition, among with Road Rash II. Payed US$ 30 for RKA, which I also believe it is a good price, since loose copies are almost at the same cost. Now Sparkster will be a different beast.

wow, just looked up the bolded...so weird that this became DecapAttack! such a 90s game that one is.

and yeah, i know about the changes but i just grabbed a boxed copy of DJ Boy on the cheap myself - speaking of, i know it's gotta be tricky finding games complete with all the offerings, so good luck!

and yeah, MBM was alright but i totally fell for Puyo Puyo when i saw (i wanna say i was unaware of it until dreamcast or so? then again in genshiken, haha)

It's really not too bad to buy boxed Genesis games with manuals. You guys have seen some of my posts. Prices aren't skyrocketing just yet. I was kind of shocked I got Herzog Zwei for the price I did. I expected that would be a $50 game easily.

Which brings up a point for discussion... when the game is selling now for $50, does that put you off? Provided that seems to be the current value, it usually means that inflation adjusted you're still getting it cheaper than when it was new. If it's complete, you're basically just buying it today for what you would have paid in the 90's.

I usually don't balk (if I have the cash) because I figure the value can really only go up from here. Retro will always be a big deal for a certain subset of gaming. Maybe moreso than in places like comics or other collectibles because the games are often supremely playable years later and modern games often don't offer anything near what the classics do.

Also, emulation, as good as it is, just isn't the same.

This might be better for a new thread...

Long term... I think the bigger fear is that reproductions and people printing their own inserts will dilute the market with stuff that looks legit but isn't.

Are you talking about the American version of RKA? Loose it's nowhere near $30 and complete it's around $20-$25 (USD)

ops, you are right. Loose copies seens to be around US$ 10-15, complete US$ 20-25.

But the kind I considered complete is difficult to find. I still think US$ 30 is fair, the problem is the shipping that always kill me, since I am not in US. Bought togheter with Road Rash II to minimize this impact.

yeah, depending on my love for the game i'd not normally balk at $50, i just went mostly loose carts when i was hardcore replacing my genesis library; i kept trying hold out for a CIB or just boxed Moonwalker but that one wasn't happening at the moment, so i just printed more covers & bought more sports games.

and yeah if you check hardcore spots like NintendoAge, they totally go after ebayers who sell repros & don't disclose it for "diluting the waters".

Retro games these days priced in the 50 dollar range will either stay in that price range or go up in price down the road for the most part. I think with the way the internet is and particularly youtube, more and more people will find out about these kinds of titles and with digital distribution taking over, people will want hard copies. I think if there is a VG crash, it will be due to digital distribution- people don't want to rent, they want to own and they want to own a piece of history. I don't mind paying in the 50 dollar range for a few Genesis games, but I usually hold out. I have most of the rare or more sought out titles aside from some of the SHMUPS and Castlevania Bloodlines but also at this point my collection doesn't need to be full of complete games.

In my world of Genesis, I beat Mega Man 2 today via my Wily Wars repro. That game is so hard. I had no idea what I signed up for. I love the game, but I wish it wasn't broken in some parts...forcing you to play for continues and no reward for accumulating multiple lives. In the latter stages I simply passed up lives and relied on continues because if you run out of power for an item you require, it's game over! Mega Man only gave me problems with the Mega Beam, MM2 had multiple points where you could get stuck and just have to kill yourself on specific jumps and bosses. So brutal. Glad to have beaten it. Looking forward to Mega Man 3.

I love the aesthetic of Wily Wars and the music uses the Genesis pretty well. Very strong showing on the Genesis in my opinion.

Yeah thats pretty much what i'm talking about, things that are different from the english release.

I broke down on Dynamite Headdy since I found it for cheap, and I already have Contra Hard Corps. I'll look into the hat though.

Anything different about JP Ghouls and Goblins?

I listened to a podcast recently that made a good point toward the end regarding the game pricing bubble. They suggested that things would burst once consoles become difficult to find in working condition and everyone plays things through emulation instead (which by then you'd imagine would be 100% perfect emulation).

I think we are a very long way from there being no consoles out there that play games. Maybe by the time I'm 80? It's already been 25 years or more for NES and there are plenty of working machines.

Disc-based machines? Maybe more of a problem... but I don't think cartridge game machines will ever go out of style.

Yeah, it's going to be a long long time before we start running low on functional hardware. Essentially never with the clone systems out there.

I think a couple years from now when we're full steam ahead into next-gen, prices will come down. This year was a good year to get into retro gaming with it being a kind of slow hold over year for PS3 and 360.

If you are buying now online, you are paying more for sure. One thing to keep in mind is that every year there are more games going into trash bins. People just don't always know the value of this stuff.

That will always mean it gets harder to find complete in box games. That's one reason I have never shied from paying a little more to get the complete package. SNES games are out of hand right now, but Genesis are pretty reasonable still and much easier to store.

Plus... they're some of the best playing games around! :D

Sonic The Hedgehog and Streets of Rage turned me into a hardcore Sega fanboy, and were a big part of the gamer I am today.

Wil forever love my Megadrive.

Streets of Rage representin'. My brother and I played the hell out of those games.

I actually loved those games so much I wrote a series of stories about law enforcement partners named Blaze and Razor. The main bad guy's name was H.A.R.M., which stood for He Ain't Right, Man.

Speaking of RKA, did you or anyone else try Sparkster? I own the SNES version (very fun game) and have been told that one is different. Is it worth a purchase still? (I own RKA too.) Would it be a bit redundant? I'm not the biggest fan of the series, but I enjoy them.

It's a completely different game. Worth a look if you're interested, although IIRC it's rather different, mechanically, from RKA and SNES Sparkster.

Yeah, it's a completely different game with lots of differences over the other games. I would say it's worth getting if it wasn't for the ridiculous prices it tends to go for. Heh.

While I like it, it's probably my least favorite, though.

Indeed, it's quite pricey... Genesis is getting there fast as far as prices are concerned. Just look at some of the shooters, Centy, PSIV, Punisher...

I'm really glad i got on the bandwagon before it happened. I paid roughly 100 dollars for all 3 of those games now. All CIB. I'm not missing a hell of a lot at this point.

Sparkster on Genesis has some head-scratchingly dumb design decisions. They're covered well in this retrospective.

RKA is far and away the best game in the series.

Only in those flimsy cardboard boxes... Around 1995, I think all Sega brand games were released in cardboard (at least it seems like it looking at the games I have from the era: Vectorman 1 & 2, X-Men 2, Beyond Oasis...).

Here in Brasil Tectoy released it in plastic cases. Funny thing is that Tectoy started back in 90 releasing games in cardboard boxes, and later switch to plastic cases.

Hellfire.

Dunno how good the game is, but that is an awesome name for a shmup.

HellFire is very, very hard according to Classic Game Room. It has a cool ancient Egypt in space aesthetic though.

On the note of Phantasy Star IV, there was a complete copy on eBay being sold as a package with a complete copy of Shining Force. I let myself get out bid at the end because it went for over 110+25 for shipping. I actually have two copies of Shining Force, one loose and one with just the box so I was a bit hesitant to go that high.

There was a complete copy of PSIV for US$ 64 on eBay this morning. I had to confirm The shopping with the seller, and while the seller returm me within am hour, of course the auction was over.

So, I finally got my Game Genie a few minutes ago, and I tried out both of my Mega Drive games on it.

Puyo Puyo boots up fine, and requires no code to work, but Sailor Moon keeps giving me the "WARNING!! This software is authorized only in Japan..." message, even though I keep entering the right code for it. I even tried an alternate code, but nothing. I also tried removing my 32X and Sega CD from my Genesis, just in case, and still nothing. Bah!

Someone else on the forums tried out the same code recently, and it worked fine for them, so I don't know what's going on. :/

EDIT: Forget it, I forgot that the Game Genie has a switch on the side that needs to be turned on for codes to work. The game works fine now.
