Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I feel your pain: I was once hit with $160 in customs fees because the seller forgot to mark as a gift a bunch of Saturn games I ordered from him...

Yeah, I agreed with the seller that he will ship using 1st class flat box and mark as a gift. However after he got to the Post Office he decided to upgrade my shipping to Priority Mail for free (thinking that will be better for me) but had to declare at least half of the price I have paid for the games. The problem is that with Priority is almost 100%sure that I will pay taxes, since it follows a specific path inside the system. Plus, of course, he forgot to mark as gift. Oh, well, at least it is great lot of games.

And speaking of controllers I got those two on ebay last Sunday:

For $ 4.00 for both. But with a $ 18.00 for (international) shipping....

That's actually pretty kickass pricing. I've kinda wanted to get a 6-button pad, myself; I hear the D-Pad is comparable to the supremely awesome Model 2 Saturn pad, and the stiffness of the default D-Pad on the 3-button pads I have kinda irritates me.

Heh, maybe I could invest in that wireless set...

The official (non-Majesco) Sega 6-button controller is one of the best gamepads ever made. It's my favorite digital-only controller, in fact...

Where am I to buy Scart RGB cables for my Mega Drive on the cheap?

I'm not looking for the crappy ones, but aiming for a price/quality kind of balance. :)

How do I get sound using this?

images

No, it's SCART to component. How am I supposed to get sound with no sound output?

Judging from the look of that you can't, as it only appears to have the video outputs for component and no audio. You'd have to have a model 1 Mega Drive and use the headphones out, either connected to some speakers or to the 3.5mm audio-in jack on your TV... if you have one.

Alternatively, you can use the RCA audio output jacks from a SegaCD model 2.

I loved the 6 button pad as a kid, hate it now because it's tiny. Hated the 3 button pad as a kid, love it now because it fits my hands.

I'm kinda agreeing now that I've held a 6-button. The thing is minuscule! The 3-button is absolutely huge though.

Would have been nice if the 6-button was in between the two, size wise.
It's like going from an Xbox Duke to a GameBoy Micro! (Okay maybe that's an exaggeration but still...)

Need some help. Where is a good place to get good Euro RGB Scart cables? I'm replacing all of my console cables with them for my Sony PVM 20m4u, and want to be 100% sure I'm buying the correct cables. Also if anyone on here knows where I can come across a Scart to BNC cable, or if someone wants to make one that would be helpful too.

True, just assumed he was only doing for the Mega Drive / Genesis since this is a Mega Drive / Genesis thread.

ive debated having the OP to reflect Sega-CD/32X cause they're honestly not likely to see dedicated threads, and they're technically add-ons that that we talk about plenty here anyway

I agree that both should be added. I love the Sega CD (although it has less than 10 interesting games for me) and would like to know more about 32X collecting.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
What good games are even on the Sega CD? My list is Snatcher, Dennin Aleste, and Bari-Arm (Android Assault). And that's it. I remember hearing the Spider Man game was decent, but it looks like a slightly better-than-average licensed game... but not much more.

32x had Knuckles Chaotix and that's about it for that system... though actually, didn't it have the best version of Blackthorne? I think that game was supposed to be decent.

Night Trap is a must-have for Sega CD. As is Silpheed. Road Avenger is a wild ride, especially if you grew up on LD games in the arcade.

Apparently Sega CD Shadowrun is very good. I think a translation patch is being worked on.

Crazy expensive game though.

edit: If you liked Arcade Ninja Warriors by Taito, there is a port on Sega CD. It has an Arrange Mode with remixed Zuntata tunes and a new plot that involves rescuing members of the band.

Sonic CD is awesome. Heard the Lunar games are awesome, haven't played them yet though (got the first one sitting here waiting). I'm curious about Earthworm Jim and Shining Force CD, whether they add anything cool or not. I also enjoy Power Rangers, but I imagine that is wholly dependant on whether you enjoyed the show as a kid.

I've actually been on a Sega CD kick the last few weeks. Have 16 games already, and a couple more should be arriving by the end of the week. Pretty shitty though, wanted to check out Batman Returns, it won't load the first level. Disc looks good, I even brought it to Family Video and had them resurface it. It just fades to black after showing Batman cruising around and loads forever, eventually the music kicks in, but the level never comes up. Glad I got it for just a few bucks, so no huge loss.

Spider-man is amazing just for the terrible animation cut scenes. Game itself is pretty boring.

I like Flink. <_<

I'm curious about Earthworm Jim and Shining Force CD, whether they add anything cool or not.
Earthworm Jim: Special Edition has an entire new level in between What the Heck? and Down the Tubes called Big Bruty. In it, you evade a giant hairless hamster alien thing, the eponymous Big Bruty, who has a keen sense of smell, a surprisingly fast running pace, a ravenous appetite and the ability devour you in one chomp if he's close enough, but can't see for shit. So, you trick him into following you, get the heck out of the way, let him run by, and continue on. A lot. It's kind of like an Earthworm Jim-styled stealth game. The stage itself is really creepy, though. Always scared the heck out of me as a kid.

Also has an extended New Junk City, if that interests you at all, and the endings are pretty awesome - particularly the Practice one. That said, pretty much all of this is also in the Windows 95 version (assuming that still runs on modern computers).

Shining Force CD is actually two of the Game Gear games using Genesis-style assets. Only one of them actually made it out of Japan on the Game Gear itself, so it's nifty to see. Also has additional "books" once you complete the two "books" that make up the two Game Gear games, so it's also got that going for it. Direct sequel to the first Shining Force, too. I want to pick this up sometime; I'm kinda annoyed I didn't pick it up for $50 from a store in Vegas last year, since the eBay prices are 1.5x-2x that. (I had my reasons, though. Namely, I didn't own a Sega CD then.)

What good games are even on the Sega CD?
Snatcher, Popful Mail, Android Assault, Sol-Feace, Sonic CD, Lords of Thunder... that's about what I have or what have on my list (some people say Keio Flying Squadron is pretty nice).

Robo Aleste is highly disappointing when compared to the greatness of Space Megaforce and especially MUSHA. Some things seem off in that game, it's like some sound effects are missing when you're shooting or when there are explosions, it's weird... I don't know exactly how to put this (control isn't as good as the other two games either). Not a must have IMO (in fact I am looking to trade my copy like I mentioned previously in the thread).

I made it again. Rushing bidding on the phone on a copy of Immortal my phone bid $ 1804 instead of $ 18.04... The auction ended at $ 35 thankfully. But Way more than I intented to pay. Specially that there was a buy-it-now option at $ 25...

I should not use my phone to bid anymore...

There are at least a couple of dozen pretty good Sega CD games. More, if you can enjoy live-action-video titles. (And Robo Aleste is better than MUSHA, no question.)

As for the 32X, it's got some good games, but it has a very small library. Still, at least a fair number of those few titles are console-exclusive games, and some of the exclusives are good.

Also has an extended New Junk City, if that interests you at all, and the endings are pretty awesome - particularly the Practice one. That said, pretty much all of this is also in the Windows 95 version (assuming that still runs on modern computers).
The game doesn't work at all on my Vista 32-bit computer; I have to play it on my older WinME machine. It is the best version -- it's the Sega CD version, plus 256 color graphics and level select via unlocking stages as you reach them instead of passwords (So lazy! Just save it to the SCD's internal memory!), but at least the SCD does have the most complete console version of the game, and it actually works.

Games that I have been watching the price of because I think look good -

Android Assault, Batman Returns (looks a bit too hard but the music sounds cool), Heart of the Alien, Keio Flying Squadron (only seen like 1 or 2 up for auction since I started looking and really expensive), Lords of Thunder, Lunar 1 (has actual different plot points and things happen then the later versions), Lunar 2 (not different from the remake as much so may skip since it is like $80+), Misadventures of Flink, Mickey Mania (hear it is the best version), Popful Mail (really want to play this), Shining Force CD (need a ram cart to play the final scenario on it that you get from beating the first two games), Snatcher of course, Sonic CD, Soul Star, Terminator, and Vay.

Rygar 8 Bit

Jaguar 64-bit

add night trap, flash back, spiderman vs kingpin, dark wizard, shining force, monkey island, road avenger, rise of the dragon, wirehead, vay, ecco 1&2, lords of thunder, double switch and battlecorps to that list

kolibri, starwars arcade, space harrier, tempo, corpse killer, blackthrone, zaxxons motherbase 2000

awww man why did i splurge & buy this on SNES

1) The SNES title is an entirely different game. It was called "Ninja Warriors Again" in Japan.

2) The Sega CD game is import-only, so you either need to buy it, rip a copy to your computer, and burn a disc for your region, or else get your system modded (or get an import cart, but those are rare). The game's story is 100% voice acted in English, though! Yes, by English speakers.

Got a few more Sega CD games this week. Pretty happy with my little collection since I just started going for them a couple weeks ago:

Started Lunar tonight. Game is kind of odd. No item descriptions, no equipment stats to like compare what you have to what you have equipped, no explanation to the battle system (the hell is the difference between flee and run?). Took me a bit to find the first dungeon, finally get there, take two steps in and it tells me I have to go all the way back to town to get a ring! The fuck!?

Liking it, though. I can't imagine how mind blowing the voice acting and cut scenes must have been if you jumped from SNES/Genesis right to it.

I still have yet to find a working Sega CD... have to play the few games I own through Kega Fusion. I don't know why but I still think it's awesome how emulators can play the actual discs for console games.

I've found no less than three SCD model 2's in the wild at garage sales, and none of them have worked correctly. It's a major bummer.

I wound up asking in the Buy/Sell/Trade thread here and immediately got one. I had bought a broken one for cheap before with the usual no power problem. Swapped out the fuse, and it still didn't work. It still didn't get power, and it kept frying power supplies, so don't know what's up with it.

Happy to have a working one now. I hope it lasts. These things are so fucking fragile it seems. Feel like I should grab a second working one now just to keep around.

That's a nice collection Hero! It seems that Sega CD games are a lot cheaper than their PAL Mega CD versions, I'm rather jealous. It's hard to justify the prices that Mega CD games go for on eBay, and they're so rare in Australia that I actually have not seen any in a pawn store/thrift shop ever.

X'Eye is the way to go. I was also burned by a non-powering model 1. The X'Eye is more robust (don't know how it goes for though - got mine for $60 8 or 9 years ago).

Been playing a lot of Twin Cobra lately. Man, I loved the arcade game and this home version is just as fuck hard as that always seemed to be. Toaplan for the mfing win.

Also, for SEGA CD, go with a Sega CDX.

If you get a Sega CD that simply won't power on it's usually a simple case of replacing the fuse. Pretty easy to do if you know how to use a soldiering iron.

I had problems with my model 1 CD until I realized it was the craptastic 3rd party AC adapter I was using not giving enough amperage. Found a more robust AC adapter (from an old Roland Keyboard I think) and bam, works excellently now.

may be off topic, but this is a question that has been bothering me for years and this seems like a somewhat-relevant place to ask it:

I swear my Genesis had an Alex Kidd game ON-BOARD/built-in but all the research I've done tells me no US release of the Genesis had on-board games, let alone Alex Kidd, and that only the Master System II had Alex Kidd built in. Or maybe it was the Mega-Drive that had it. I don't know, I forgot. Did my parents somehow procure an import Megadrive/Master System 2 and all along I thought I had a Genesis?

Okay, but haven't those games gotten better ports elsewhere?

I don't see a whole lot of appeal of solid port that's still less than ideal just because it happens to be on 32x.
