Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

AFAIK, the port in the back literally doesn't have the pins for stereo - it is simply not possible to get stereo out of that side without modding.

Which is why everybody not interested in modding gets their stereo out of the headphone jack, instead, because that is stereo.

You're right, maybe that A/V cable didn't originally come in the box. I looked at the manual it and shows a simpler A/V cable with mono sound output. Now I gotta track that down the correct cable. :)

Also saw this, why would someone pull the poor mega drive's cord like that?

mega_drive_illustration.jpg

I wonder if the cable you got belongs to the PC Engine Duo or Neo Geo, as those use similar DIN connectors.

ddin't know ya'll were still after the duo/trio...i bumped this thread a few times when it's been in stock & saw little response. retrogamecave posts on his FB when they're on deck, ill be sure to let ya'll know!

also that manual cartoon of MD is adorable, stay outta the rain little guy

edit: also your guys games came in ill send them out here sometime this week

awesome man! can't wait, again lemme know if you want shipping $

That little comic with the Mega Drive reminded me of this little guide to taking care of your cartridges from the back of the Puyo Puyo manual, which I just scanned:

No clue what it actually says, though. Hah.

I am trying to figure out the early EA releases on Genesis, maybe you guys can help me out.

Yesterday I have received The Immortal which I bought some days ago. But its case is quite strange. It is thinner and a little bit taller than the usual EA case. It is also shinny black, not matte as usual. The game cartridge fits loosely in the case with no clips to secure it. I looked for the clips and while there looks to be a place to put the card, there is no clips to hold it (I checked there are not broken clips, there just are not there). I asked some other ebay sellers about the game and they say the game stays loose inside the box. Is that right? Any of you that have this game can confirm it to me?

Popped into the thrift store yesterday to check things out. Was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of Genesis games for $1.99 each. Managed to grab the non-sports titles:

Risk - a board game I've actually never played
Fatal Labyrinth - I guess it's a basic rogue-like
Sonic 1 - Not For Resale edition! lol
LHX Attack Chopper - I'm expecting a reeaally slow polygonal 3D shooter

C94F5E80-81D0-4EF3-9D46-0B7A1E30FD03-15134-00000C184D266C40_zps567b7e01.jpg

I don't expect much from them, but they're all complete. And at $1.99 each, it's no big loss if any of them suck. (And I found out I already had a NFR Sonic!)

But the real find is this little gem:

Yup--Grind Stormer. Complete. $1.99--I could NOT believe my eyes. I don't really care for Truxton, but I'm looking forward to giving this a whirl!

Grind Stormer looks awesome! nice haul, and man i used to rent the crap out of Fatal Labyrinth...i could play it for hours, but the game loves dumping you in the middle of a death-mess around the later teen levels as i recall

Yyyyyyyep.
I found it quite impressive that the Mega Drive could pull of the polygons (dat BLAST PROCESSING) but yeah, wasn't a lot of fun.

Holy hell.

I never find anything good in thrift stores / yard sales. I'm lucky if I find ANYTHING video game related.

However, I'm glad someone who's actually going to play it found it, as opposed to someone that'll just flip it for a profit.

Wow, looking at youtube, that was a nice one!

There are copies that freeze 100%?

Most of the copies printed had cheap circuit board that caused random freezing (and forcing a reset). Nothing wrong with the ROM - if you re-flash the ROM to a donor cart it works great. Just crappy/defective PCB to blame. I don't think the Japanese version (V-V) has an issue.

Regarding the cable connection -- I believe Genesis came with an RF adapter, and that's it. The first console that I knew of to use RCA's out of the box was the N64

I've been burned too many times lending games and either never getting them back, or getting them back in poor condition.

I now have blanket rule of never lending games to ANYONE. I feel kinda like an ass, but the line had to be drawn.

You're not alone, I learned the hard way too. But I do have two gamer friends that know how to look after stuff so it's OK and we can share still.

Probably the most obscure Genesis game that I loved was Wiz 'n Liz. But oh, I loved so many. There are Genesis games embedded into my memory so tightly I'll never be able to get them out.

This console is basically my childhood.

Didn't even think deals like this existed in the wild anymore. Thought that everyone had wised up to vidya games being worth money, and even if they didn't packs of roaming resellers would get to anything good first. Great pickup.

Master System was released here in 1987/88 with composite cables.

Edited: I mean, the system was released with an RF switch, but the console itself had a composite (mono) output, that uses normal cables (not a proprietary PS2-like connector). I always connected it using yellow/white composite cables.

Wiz 'n Liz is great. Awesome animation, and kind of addictive. Very well designed.

I started to think that too around last year, and while not genesis related, i say keep looking... because if i can come across a mint condition Einhander in a thift store for 5 bucks, I feel like anything can happen lol.

Just have to check as often as possible. Or just swing by any resale shop you see while out.

In the US, yeah, this is the case. I think the SNES often came with composite cables, but the Genesis seems to have usually come with just an RFU. They didn't even start including the 6-button controller in the box until, like, the Genesis 3 or something, even though it should have been the only packin from like 1994 on... and actually, I don't know if any systems before the Genesis 3 included composite cables, either (the Genesis 3 did). I think the CDX may have, and the 32X came with a mono composite cable (even though the Genesis 2 and 32X systems support stereo output, it only included the mono cable I believe; that's the cable I have, for example), but standard Genesises... I think they included just the RFU with all Genesis 1 and 2 systems.

I love seeing these kind of threads, it brings back a lot of memories of the "good ole days" when it was Sega vs. Nintendo...Genesis does what Nintendon't :p....anyways I thought I'd share my favorite & least favorite Genesis games.

Favorites:
1st Party - Sonic & Knuckles
3rd Party - Castlevania Bloodlines (Konami please re-release a digital version of this game)

Least Favorites:
1st Party - Dick Tracy (Sega developed & published their own version of this pos game)
3rd Party - Tie between Ecco the Dolphin & Beauty & The Beast: Roar of the Beast

I also do not like Dick Tracy (did not back in the day and still not, despite having it in my collection). But Ecco??? Ecco is a masterpiece from its time.

Now to see if you got lucky with a functional Grind Stormer. Hope it doesn't freeze!
I played about 15 mins. the other night, and another half hour last night. So far so good, but I haven't even passed the second level yet. Is it supposed to freeze at certain portions of the game, or after a certain timeframe?

I like Grind Stormer MUCH more than Truxton. Granted, it came out a few years after Truxton, but the graphics, particularly backgrounds, are more interesting and varied. The first-level music reminds me of Raiden. But I do think it's cheap that enemies can come from the bottom of the screen without warning and kill you.

(Something about the title Grind Stormer makes me want to say it in Heidern's voice when he shouts "Storm Bringer!" in KoF. lol)

Reviews haven't been kind to Fatal Labyrinth, but I like the pick-up-and-play nature of it.

Yeah, there are a few thrift shops that I routinely stop in. I never expect to find anything, but there's always the possibility. And that's what I like about this element of retrogaming. Suprises, though increasingly rarer, still occasionally happen, and they can be so rewarding. I'll never be able to complain, because I've had more than my fair share. But I'll keep looking nonetheless. ;-)

It's random. It's been a while since I've played a freezing cart, but it's usually in the first two levels.

Personally Grind Stormer is such a weak port of the arcade original that I prefer Truxton, since it's more faithful.

@ Rygar 8bit & Irish Ninja I didn't like Dick Tracy because of it's odd (to me at least) control scheme and unappealing visuals. Plus it didn't help that I still had bad memories from playing the NES version when I tried playing this version.

Wow... All this time I thought my loose copy of Earthbound was my rarest game (via sell value). Apparently it';s my original US CIB copy of Pier Solar cart homebrew release. Wow. Randomly looked up auctions on eBay and saw it going for $300, $400, etc. I only looked it up cause I saw someone in the B/S/T thread looking for it with a $200ish price tag request. Kinda made me go "wut". heh

I have no interest in selling it, that just blew my mind.. :lol

I think the price will drop once it releases on Dreamcast (among other platforms).

I really do not get all these homebrew releases price scheme.
I know that usually those guys make a small print of the game, thus it may became rare over time, but those guys are still around and can produce how many more copies they can. The "1st edition, 1st print" editions are just bs to inflate the prices of those games imo. And the devs seems to encourage it. The "value" of the game just overshadow its quality.

I only imagine is that these releases cost a decent amount of money to produce, esp for something like the original release of Pier Solar which was done professionally with the 64 meg cart, cd, nice looking case, and full color manual. So probably can't just randomly keep producing them without assurance that they will be able to sell them. Which is prob why they have done a few re-releases, esp with the recent Kickstarter thing.

Just my guess anyways.

If my memory serves me right i beleive that the NES Action set (Mario Bros./Duck hunt cart with grey gun) originally came with both the RF switch AND compsite cables.

Maybe. But that allows scapers to charge US$ 300 for a "1st print" edition, when 1st print is a vague term. If the devs continues to produce the same game and edition to supply the demand the prices will not raise as such. They deliberatly change the edition to inflade the prices of the original, gather attention and hope for new sales of the "current" release due to this interest. But what this strategy gathers are people who expect to resell the game for profit in a short time, not people really interest in playing their games.

In this case, I kinda doubt people were buying a $50 game that had to be pre-ordered 1.5 years before it's release from a rather unknown random website just to scalp it. I took a leap of faith in pre-ordering this game. And that came with a over year wait for it to be completed as well as major issues with the development. Heck, I even forgot I pre-ordered it by the time it came out. lol

And the game has gotten re-releases too. As far as I know, the re-releases and original are identical.

When I pre-ordered this game, it was Fall of 2008.

They are not. The cover is different, and even it says "Reprint Edition" in big letters.

Well, I guess it is a reward to the ones who really pre-order the game, but it inflates the price of the original print.
