Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Gmail says that in 2011 I bought CIBs of...

Lords of Thunder
Astal
EGG: Elemental Gimmick Gear
Robo Aleste
and Silpheed...

Off a guy on Racketboy for $75. Shipped.

Cha-ching.

Still doesn't beat $3 at Goodwill, though. Lucky!

Good point lol. Wonder if / when this shit crashes and games become worthless again.
Been thinking about this lately. . . is any retro stuff generally on the decline currently? If so, what? Seems to me it's all just heading upward or leveling off, but not going down. (NES, SNES, Genesis, TG-16, Neo Geo, PS1, etc.)

I mean, the prized games from all systems will pretty much retain/increase in value, and the crap games will be super cheap, but generally speaking, are there any libraries that are decreasing?

EDIT: And during the crash of the early 80s, there wasn't really a collector's market (was there?), at least not like today's.

Most games that are pre-NES are cheap as dirt. You can buy probably half the Atari 2600 library for a buck a cartridge.

^damn, yeah both those are stupid good deals

I don't think NES-onward will ever go down again. They're enduring classics for a reason. It's a different situation from Atari/Intellivision.

man i hope this isnt the case, Mzo keeps calling this the "dark age of game collecting", haha

it's a bad time to be collecting price wise. The internet has covered the games to get pretty well now also. it is what it is, even goodwill figured out they should sell this stuff online.

I only collect games I want to play, and don't mind paying $70 for something amazing. Everything releases today at $60.

I think part of the problem is that every buyer is basically a collector, nowadays. So you have fewer numbers of people willing to sell every day, as copies of uncommon and semi-rare games move from the collections of casual players to people who want to hang on to games.

Well I pitched in for the Genesis history book kickstarter.

Awesome! Speaking of which, here's an update from said Kickstarter:

Given that our SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works project - fuelled by unrelenting, worldwide 16-bit passions - has now reached a staggering £53,500 in only 4 days, a number of you have been asking about what that means for the book. Will we be adding stretch goals? New rewards? The actual baseball cap worn by the kid on the front of the Menacer packaging? Well, I must confess I had absolutely no idea the campaign would go like this, so I was entirely unprepared for this situation arising. My immediate instinct is to direct the money back at the book itself, so everybody benefits from a book with more pages, better production values (they were budgeted to be pretty darn nice already!) and even more impressive cover finishes. The addition of different paper stocks, 5th colours, posh bindings or even coloured page edges (this would be so nice: http://goo.gl/BDKRKJ) would mean that every backer would gain from the insane popularity of our project. We're currently speaking to our printers about what's possible.

'Wait! That's just commie nonsense!' I hear you cry! 'I want more stuff!' Well, imaginary materialist backer, let me know! If you have an idea related to what else we might offer, please leave a comment below. I'll be right here to chip in, make notes and scurry away to get costs.

In other news, we've managed to speak to some new industry veterans who will be contributing to our opening essay: Charlie Skillbeck (Developer of the peerless top-down racer Micro Machines), Scott Steinberg (former Marketing VP) and Mac Senour (former Producer) will be divulging all to Keith very shortly. Also, the new addition to our directory of interviews is a bona fide Genesis heavyweight: Greg Johnson, creator of ToeJam & Earl. I hope that gets pulses racing, it certainly did around these parts, I can tell you.

If there's anything you're wondering about the project, or if you'd just like a heated debate about which Mega Drive/Genesis Shinobi game is the best (it's the first one) then drop me a line here or at [email protected].

Thanks. The system, carts, and Mortal Kombat were all bought from my local used game store and the rest off of Ebay. Prices were nothing amazing, except for the Genesis/Sega CD combo ($65 and a 30-day guarantee). I was glad to be able to buy the system local and not have to worry about paying for shipping and if the system would arrive intact.

Very nice finds! I wanna find a working Model 1 Sega CD so bad!

I saw one in goodwill for $5, but I quickly went to look for the games and someone got it instead. I'll just keep telling myself that it probably didnt work, since the sega cd goes for a bit on ebay.

Has anyone got any opinions on either of the Terminator 2 games? One of the them is a port of T2: The Arcade Game, and the other is just a straight up game based off the movie. I bought both for cheap today so I don't feel too guilty, but I still would like to know other people's impressions of the games.

Also, I don't actually own a Genesis, I rock Genny games through the Nomad. Like a pro.

T2 is cool if you have the Menacer, but otherwise, i think the game is just sort of boring. I haven't played the other Terminator 2 game.

Crosspost:

Kinda off-topic but not really:

Whats a good, low to the ground chair for gaming? My friend had some sort of black half egg type chair and cant recall where he got it, but its comfortable as hell. I was thinking about going with a beanbag of sorts, but my dog would probably take that over lol. Not looking for anything too expensive/extravagant.

Found a picture but still have no idea:

Cyberdog Returns!

Is there a certain brand you would go with, or would any gaming chair fitting that design should be a safe bet?

ive had 2 or 3 of that style, and they were pretty much all the same for me. just make sure if you're getting one used (last one was like $10 on craigslist! also i dont know where you'd find a new one) that the staples inna back are intact/not loose or they'll totally catch the carpet when you fall back over drunk and everyone will just laugh and laugh and laugh

Mega fact: I had no idea Mega Play existed until a recent Game Sack video and comments here.

props on Alien Solider, but...did you perchance just get that Mega Play from ebay? perhaps from a seller who was also selling an old Next Generation & 2 issues of Super NES buyer's guide at the same time? cause if so i think we bid against each other man, haha

Cool beans. Alien Soldier is a legit-ass game. Highly recommended.

I posted this in the SMS therad, but might as well post it here: Homebrew down port of Musha Aleste to the Master System http://youtu.be/zMnv-sx1AAg

Yup its a hell of a rush, literally! Took a few tries to get the hang of things, but once you do, it plays great.

You know...looking at that reminds me that there is a GG Aleste that doesnt look bad at all.

I knew there would be some crossover at some point. I think the same thing happened in the SNES thread with a copy of SFC Axelay.

ehhh its close but not exact; the ones i print fit the spine but tend to come up a bit shy on the edges of both sides. it's okay for my ragtag collection since you only see the spine 99% of the time, but if you're OCD i think it might bother you!
