this was pretty well put together, gonna have to see what else this guy has in the series!

AH! I've seen another video of his linked around that details the MD's sound chips. Just looking at his channel and it's filled with really awesome stuff. Subbed!

Crusader of Centy really looks awesome, been on my to buy list for way too long haha.

Edit: This is a pretty cool short video glossing over some artwork from various MD titles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0YjcZrzaFE

My father-in-law did me a solid and decided to mail us a huge care package of all my wife's old video games, mostly Genesis and NES stuff. I'm going to hook them up to my 720p Vizio LCD. I'd like to hook the Genesis M1 over RGB but I'm a bit fuzzy as to how to do this and whether the cost in cables is worth it. If I'm reading this thread correctly I'd need the SCART cable, then a SCART -> Component box, and finally a 3.5mm jack to RCA for the audio from the headphone jack to the TV. Am I doing it right? Is that the cheapest option getting RGB out of the genesis, or is there some way to get SCART to VGA since my TV has an input for that as well?

I had no idea Centy wen't for so much nowadays. I bought it from some redneck at a flea market for $5 like 10 years ago.

It's a great game. It's a better top-down action adventure game than that one really famous SNES sacred-cow.

Yeah, I couldn't get into Secret of Mana either.

I'm assuming this is a joke but... you know I've tried playing SoM fairly recently and... man that's really not a good game. At least, not as good as people claim it is.

I payed so much for it, I really, really tried to enjoy it but... just, ugh, it has problems =/

I wasn't even thinking of Mana but Centy is def. a better game than it.

I loved secret of mana as a kid, but fuck me - it's cheap as hell. That tiger boss in the witches castle is absolutely frustrating as all hell.

Ah well. Seiken Densetsu 3 is far, far better anyhow.

It was a joke (I knew he meant LttP, but I honestly like that game a lot), but yeah, something felt really off about Secret of Mana when I got it back in 2010 along three other games (Yoshi's Island, SMRPG, Legend of the Mystical Ninja/Goemon) for $60. Soundtrack's amazing, graphics are very good, but gameplay doesn't feel very satisfying at all. I don't like having to wait between strikes, or else I'll only do 1HP damage and elongate that wait. Apparently the way to get through the game is to chain magic attacks so as to stun everything and never let them lay a finger on you, but egh.

Try Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2. It fixes everything that was wrong with it's predecessor. Those power up moves help so much!

Translation is superb too.

I liked Secret of Mana, but I haven't played that game in over a decade, so I wouldn't go to overboard on that game (other then the OST which is pretty good, a lot of unusual instrumentation for an SNES game). I honestly felt at the time that Secret of Evermore was actually a better game (and SD3 is even better).

I thought Centy was good at the time, but again I haven't played that game in like 20 years. Beyond Oasis is awesome, however (and Landstalker is still one of my favorites from that era).

top tier OST but yeah, its a great one during an era of scarce RPGs, not a timeless classic (though you could've enjoyed it a lot more if you had a 2nd player about). there's not much plot and pretty much zero character to speak of for the most part too.

its also gotta have about the worst system for leveling your magic, ugh

picked up a repro of it, lookin forward to it!

Who knows? Sega owns Atlus now, so maybe their Genesis library is fair game now, Centy/Soleil included.

yeah i'd been wondering about this myself lately too

Been making a whole load of Everdrive labels. Will post them later and share if anyone wants a decent copy.

Yea it would be awesome if you posted them up. Maybe give me a hint on how to print actual size too. For the life of me i cant figure it out on windows 8.

^made my night! i honestly havent played evolved half as much as part 1 though, mostly because you could unlock everything in that one just by keepin' at it, kinda bummed they ddin't do that again. ah well, those names are enough to get me back on board!

I just work to exact measurements at 600dpi on Photoshop and save it as a PDF. It's then just a matter of opening that PDF and printing it as actual size not scaled.

I gave up on finding decent label paper, so instead I print on high end photo paper, cut out the label and then spray the back of it with PVA spray. Works great.

And yeah the titles seem pretty easy to get switched around.

Just found this in my wardrobe at my parents' house. Looks great in RGB and I forgot how much I love the music. I feel like I want to play through the whole thing now, don't think I ever did as a kid because we borrowed it but only ever for a short period of time.

Makes world leading predictions like "The sun will rise tomorrow"
So brasso/metal polish can revive a cart? Found Batman & Robin today. cleaned the hell out of it, still no dice.

I usually use metal contact cleaner. I've also heard good things about stovetop cleaners? Heard brasso can usually leave a residue behind.

I have just one problem with my megadrive - the controller doesn't reach the sofa. So far, I've had to sit on the floor to play. Easy solution is to buy an extension lead, right?

Nope. They're like fucking gold dust, and the ones I have found are going for near £20 on ebay. Screw that.

What I've done is buy one of these via ebay:

£1.61 for a 1m extension lead. Not bad - it should work, right? I mean, it's the same connection. If it does end up working then this is definitely the way to go if you need an extension.

And those screws aren't an issue - they can be taken out easily if need be.

I never played Xmen 2 until tonight, that cold opening is awesome. Do any other games drop you right into a level as soon as you hit the power button? I don't think it's even possible anymore with all the middleware credits and shit you have to place at the beginning of everything today.

I bought one for like $4 shipped off ebay that works fine.

In modern games, middleware logos usually mask the initial load period. If they didn't have them, you'd just be staring at another loading screen.

Right, here's the two Everdrive labels I made by request on another site if anyone wants to use them:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/pn9htmbi65xvwpq/mega everdrive.pdf

And if you want one that doesn't have the name hidden whilst in the console:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/e7b8n4eqc77ex63/everdrive2.pdf

Print onto high grade photo paper without scaling the size. If you are using backed label paper then awesome, if not then just use decent adhesive without getting any on the front.

So where is the best place to buy an Everdrive from?

Every time I do internet window shopping, it seems Stone Age Gamer always has the upper hand on price. They also happen to be on the tongues of many well known retro you tubers. That's where I'd buy.

Here's a fun one for you guys; here's an old Jetzons song, apparently a fairly rare one at that. Despite its obscurity, any Genesis fan worth their salt is very likely to recognize it.

Now I need a loss less version of this...

When I first played Xmen 2 as a kid, I initially believed that my game was faulty because of that cold open. I was convinced that there should've been a scene to allow me to select my starting X-Man lol.

Thanks, just checked it out and their website looks great! I see two Mega Drive ones though, one is ~$80 and one is ~$145... I wonder what the difference is...

Edit: Looks like the more expensive one has a few extra features...

Well prices go up another $15 just for a shell... A shell you can acquire form a dollar madden game and just dremel a bit...

I'd be surprised if making your own cart, artwork, and case ends up costing $15.

That would be the Mega EverDrive. That's a real bad mamma jamma. :p It has an ARM processor on it that in theory lets it emulate other features or entire games and feed them into the megadrive.

Hmm...that would be something cool to have. I could go with the 40 dollar back for just the book.

EDIT: Err... 48.

Yeah, I got the mega everdrive because:

1. Can exit to menu during gameplay with a button combination.

2. Savestates

3. Instant game loading

4. Full Sega CD support

5. No flashing games to RAM, meaning the cart will essentially outlive me.

6. ARM processor technically allows NES and Gameboy level emulation - whenever it arrives

7. Support for large size romhacks. For example, Sonic Megamix and Mortal Kombat

8. Got a good deal on it - wasn't much more than the basic Everdrive MD

9. Micro SD and USB ports.

10. Full Master System support.

I was only able to order the PCB by itself, but I had a spare Sonic 1 cart lying around so that's no issue at all.

^damn...so the vanilla model doesn't bring that stuff?

pretty awesome to have a single cart for SMS, Genesis, CD & 32X stuff on it, much less with save states...one less reason for me to grab a retron 5 as well

The basic model is just that, basic.

Similar to the Super Everdrive vs the insane SD2SNES (which is more expensive because it has almost every cart expansion chip apart from the SFX on the pcb)

It even has a BSX chip!!!!

*Smug face* I got that song in the first second that it played. *Smug face*

Seriously though, I need to buy that song, put it in the car stereo, and roll the window down. Thug life!
