Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Its crazy how HPB prices fluctuate for games. Sometimes they'll be below online prices, others will be at the online average, and some seldom are above.

Coincidentally I played Bloodlines for the first time in a while last night. Eric makes the game so easy. Maybe they should have balanced it so he couldn't use sub weapons or something. With the spear's crazy good hitbox he sure doesn't need them.

I'm looking to pick up a Genesis to add to my growing retro console collection. Was never into Sega as a kid, so my knowledge is pretty light. I understand that out of the three base models, I should look for a model 1 that has "High Definition Graphics" on the top for the best audio/video, is this right? I also read that I should get a splitter for the headphone jack to get stereo sound. For video, is there a composite cable that I can get easily? I know model 2s have this capability out of the box, but I've read that their audio/video is typically inferior to the model 1s.

Some non HD graphics model 1s are as good as HD graphics model 1s but its not a guarantee. A check of the ports in the back is the way to tell. The main reason to get a good Model 1 is the audio. Model 2 has more muffled sound.

I think you could probably use a standard 3.5mm to composite audio Y cable if you want stereo out on the headphone jack? Never tried it myself. I have a spare cable at home so i might try tonight.

For video you'll need to make sure you get the right cable. Model 1s and model 2s have a different output jack so double check when you are buying. Genesis AV cables are very common so you shouldn't have any issues finding a cable on amazon or eBay. The genesis also supports RGB without modification if that's your thing. Svideo requires modding.

a bookstore near me has a whole retro game section that's pretty nice, but the prices have creeped up to a few bucks over eBay prices. Really sucks.

Out of curiosity what do you check for on the ports on the back to get a good one?

You can, thats what I use. Grab a decent length one from monoprice or something.

If the back of your Model 1 looks exactly like this with or without the EXT port (a large blank space where the EXT should be)?

If it doesnt look like it would have any room for the EXT port at all, and the ports on the back are all moved over to the left?

Yeah I thought that the site image links would still be good, i'll try to find some better images.

Just saw your edited pic, I'm in the clear!

I woulda been surprised if I had the stinker though, I love the picture and sound on my Mega Drive.

*hugs it while no one is looking*

^from that pic, i think you do actually (could be wrong though, i only know to look for the gap at the end for lower audio chips)

Is it rare to have one of those?

I'm pretty sure that it came with my Sega CD when I bought it back around 1993 or so at a Blockbuster along with Sonic CD.

I also still have the box for my Sega CD, as well as 32X, along with a whole bunch of other boxes. I don't have the box for my Genesis, though...but I do still have the manual, at least.

According to the link posted earlier, it's one of the "stinkers." Oh, well.

I have 4 different Model 1 Genesis's. 1 Non-TMSS version, one regular TMSS HD graphics model, the one with the blank portion where the EXT used to be and the "stinker" model. I can confirm the last one does have slightly bad audio.

Ever since I watched the Street Fighter Assassin's Fist trailer, Youtube's recommendation algorithm has been returning a bunch of live action fan videos for games.

This one for Streets of Rage came up, and it's so campy and awful, but I couldn't look away, haha.

Gunstar, any more thoughts on the high score contests?

Im in for fun regardless since it'll give people reason to jump around their libraries, or experience new games.

They do something at racketboy.com and I quite enjoy the idea of doing something similar on neogaf. The Together Retro is once a month-ish, they pick an old game and present it to the community, then play it and compare their score or completion or whatever. It's meant to be half competitive, half cooperative, but more importantly bring the light on forgotten classics or unknown gems, games you may have as a collector but never bothered to play seriously, etc.

I know some folks in this thread follow Generation 16, so I figured I'd point out that the series has its own (kinda ugly) website now. You'll find semi-daily progress updates here from now on.

You know I'll never get why some of these damn used book stores charge ebay price including shipping or even more. I guess there are always suckers that will buy it.

Never got to mention it, but did decent at PAX: 100 bucks for 100% complete copies of NBA Jam, RBI Baseball 95, and T-Mek for the 32x. I only need BC Racers, Toughman Contest, Star Trek, Virtua Fighter, World Series Baseball, and Spider-Man for a complete set of games (i need Wrestlemania and Doom manuals, on top of boxes and manuals for Blackthorne and Primal Rage)

Also got Generations Lost and Centurion complete for 10 bucks. Not too bad.

It takes a special kind of crazy to spend a bunch of money on a bad game.

It's interesting how the Atari 2600 Spider-Man game was actually pretty good, especially considering the hardware it was on. At least I remember having fun with it as a kid. =)

It would drive me insane if i was only missing one game though. Plus, as a big Spider-Man fan, i want to do a video on all the Spider-Man games, and how almost none of them are any good : (

Its also a special kind of crazy to go for a complete library of any system. =P

Something about them not having MSRP prices anymore, so like classic out of print books, they can charge what they deem accurate value. Remember reading that on the back of a half price books receipt.

Asterix and the Great Rescue is an old favorite of mine, actually, even though I'm loath to call it a good game outright. Guilty pleasure, I suppose you could say.

Just a tip: let the enemies walk into your fists instead of throwing the fists while walking; the hitboxes are a lot more reliable that way.
