Sega has filed trademarks for 'Ecco' and 'Ecco the dolphin'

Maybe a hot take, but Ecco was never good.

We say this because we were never good at Ecco

I found the first game super fascinating and beautiful on the Mega Drive but it was way too hard for me as a kid - I could hardly get anywhere.

Eh who am I kidding, I still can't get anywhere 🥺

It's the future Ecco now has arms, legs and lungs, and can handle swords and guns.

edit-I just realized Dolphins already have lungs.

Awful games. Hated them.
My (much older non-gamer) cousin got me Sonic 2 for Christmas 1992 and it was fucking awesome. I didn't even ask for it. He told me he asked the guys at the store what the biggest games were that Christmas, and they told him Sonic 2 and Ecco the Dolphin, so he went with Sonic.

to this day I'm thankful I got to have a joyful Christmas playing Sonic 2 instead of a shitty rage inducing Christmas playing Ecco.

Reading on the wikipedia page for the series (I didnt know it was made by a Hungarian developer). They mention trying to make a spiritual successor to Ecco called The Big Blue, which I guess refers to the 1988 Luc Besson movie.

I have a vague memory of ignoring a street party to play this and then getting stuck and going outside for the party after all.

I don't recall what the street party was for or what year it was though. So a bad dolphin game sticks in my head more than cake and bunting.

Both games on the 16 bit machines were great- they both had fantastic music and were a novel idea really. The first game was a little punishing and the levels were uneven, but good overall, Tides of time was an excellent game, it looked and played great.
The CD versions of the games were even improved beyond that, the first game even as far as I recall had better graphics, the graphics you got in the second cartridge version were closer to those enhanced graphics and the levels
were a little more varied but less "naturalistic" - and STORY was quite good for what it is. I know they were not everyones cup of tea but they were good.

Soundtracks though, SO good. Memorable for sure.

The Dreamcast game later ported to PS2 with some changes was a graphical showcase... they got a lot right but a lot wrong and didnt really bring ecco forward, also the weird story and odd narration made the game feel
much less epic and cool and just kind of strange and touchyfeely.... EXCELLENT work on the game, really - just didnt hit the "ecco" vibe for me or most others Ive ever discussed it with who were fans of the original games.

Ecco junior? No idea never played it. LOL. Game gear/SMS version I did bit but not enough to weigh in.

The original Ecco the Dolphin was a classic. It was pretty tough, but I did finish it. It's weird because even though a lot of the games from that era were hard as nails, I managed to complete the majority of the ones that I enjoyed.

Anyway, for its time the visuals were great, as were the music and sound effects. It was a seriously moody game with a superb atmosphere.

That doesn't necessarily mean I want to see a reboot though, as it was a game of its time.

I must of spent so many hours just fucking about in the first area as a kid, didnt know what I was doing but loved it anyway, stupid little cunt I was, and im in to do it again with a new Ecco .

It wasn't well telegraphed how to unlock the glyphs. I feel that was 90% of the problem.

Seeing the name Ecco the Dolphin makes me giggle since I'm currently learning Italian. If you know Italian, then you probably know why.

Finished both of them. The CD, PC, and IIRC Japanese cart versions of the first are superior to the original version by virtue of one big change: unlocking a barrier glyph acts like a checkpoint. The difficulty in the original cart version could be a little dickish without any checkpoints.

The Tides of Time was fairer, generally, with one big exception: Tube of Medusa. The level can be a bit of a crapshoot, and if you fail it throws you back and makes you do Sky Tides again, which is an annoying forced scrolling level. This happens pretty early in the game too, so feels like it might have been an anti-rental level.

As for this; we've seen this type of story many times before with different IP, so I'm not expecting anything.

Ecco but not Outrun?

When was the last time Sega gave a shit about their unrealistic blue sky arcade racers?

I think it was Sega Rally 3/Revo in 2007. And that PC port was a travesty.

After that there are a few games in arcades only that never got ported.

Defender of the Future 2 lets fucking GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Or even just a remaster. Game is low key fantastic. Excellent music, too. The game's music is seriously so haunting and ambient. A beautiful successor to the Genesis originals. DoTF really is one of Dreamcast's hidden gems. It's too bad the PS2 version was basically completely forgotten/ignored.

I tried Ecco once on the 3DS and that octopus in, what? the second level? was the most split-second, pixel-perfect thing I've had to do in a game in a long time. I didn't play the game again.
This is probably a nothing burger - Ecco wasn't a seller then, and it definitely wouldn't be one today.

Wow didn't think this game was hated??

I would love to see a new entry….

I don't know if I would call the Ecco games hated... But the first one is notoriously pretty hard. The lead designer was paranoid that people would be completing the game in a rental session, and made it stupidly hard on purpose.

I had it for the Sega CD back in the day. I really liked the Spencer Nilsen CD soundtrack. It was very 90's 'new age'. I always thought the game looked pretty good graphically. It played well, but has its' quirks. The first one has a legitimately dark tone to it that gives the game a slightly unsettling atmosphere. Ecco II was more balanced and a more refined game.

I also had Defender of the Future for the Dreamcast, which I thought was under rated. The game looked impressive for the time. Appaloosa had a sequel in development for the Dreamcast, but it was cancelled.

Ecco Jr is a better game than most will give it credit for.

Overall, it is still a unique premise. I wonder whose going to develop a new Ecco game, if Sega funds a new one? It's really not a terrible franchise as a whole. At least, I don't think so.

Why file a trademark for an old game? Who even remembers Ecco the Dolphin? It's not like it was hugely successful. Just make a new IP. Wouldn't make any difference.
