Sony has filed DMCA to Lance McDonald to Remove the Bloodborne 60fps Patch

I mean .. even if it is, kind of a dick thing to dmca this community-loved patch... the fandom who really loved it will still buy a properly authored remaster anyway..

Just seems the Nintendo kind of petty.
Can't do this shit on a normal console.

Spitting the dummy out far too late on this one. If they are really that butthurt about this then get a fucking move on and give us a remaster or a re-release on PC already.

I dont how legally they are allowed to do this. isn't free ?

if its free and he is not gaining any money from this, then it should be 100% legal to do this. since he is not making money off sony owns IP.

Can someone explain the business case for this? Like, someone's done their work for free, which results in a better game and can equal more sales... like what am I missing?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

That they're about to launch their own remaster at a higher / full price point and they don't want people to be able to access the $10 original game with 60fps anymore.

I have yet to understand why Sony threw Bloodborne in the closet and forgot about. Or else, has tried their damndest to forget about it.

I hope the impending Remake has been in development for a while and is close to launching. I thought we saw a rumor that BluePoint had people working on it along with their other game (which turned out to be God of Live Service), but then the latest news about them killing the live service game made it sound like they had the whole studio working on that.

It would suck if they're just getting started on it now and it's going to be another 2+ years.

Or, you know, you could have hired this dude and the other modders working on Bloodborne on PC and commercially released a quick and easy remaster and charged $10 to $20 for existing owners and $30 to $40 for new owners.

It just seems to me PS might need some quick and easy cash after all the complete busts they've released recently.

But that's just me. What do I know?

Sony will wanna sell us 999$ ps6 in holidays 2028 to us, so they already know they gonna need proper bloodborne 4k60fps remaster by then just like they needed demons souls remaster in 2020 to sell ps5 xD

Come on guys, I'm with you all, but please help yourselves from saying dumb shit...
Did they or did they not just lose $400 million dollars on Concord? Has their PC been or not been a bust? I'm not saying they're broke, but this seems like easy cash they're leaving on the table after a string of misfires.

If I'm not mistaken, Lance's patch is only for the PS4 version, other people ported it to PS5, but in both those cases it requires owning the game. No piracy involved.

Well for a start there is, and only ever has been a PS4 version! Lance's patch puts the game in a faked-up PS5 container file in order to unlock system resources sufficient to allow the game to hit 60fps consistently - because obviously prior to a PS4 emulator existing there was no alternative and PS4 -even PS4 Pro- is capping at 30 because it can't run at 60 - even dropping to 720p.

Either way, the key point is that the emulator isn't magically going to break a hard frame-rate cap, especially not without triggering the same side-effects that Lance's patch has to fix due to certain features being tied to the original cap

Ok? but that's not piracy tho. You said it lets pirates enjoy a better version of the game.

Lance's PS4 mod and whoever ported it to PS5 explicitly requires owning the game.

Torrent .iso.
Patch .iso.
Run on Emu at 60.

Early on in the video Lance specifically mentions back-porting chunks of engine code from PS4-Pro Dark Souls 3, then manually patching a bunch of stuff that works based on fixed intervals including stuff like patrol pathing and cloth physics. (in itself a DMCA violation)

And even then he says it only gets to 60 a majority of the game, not all of it on PS4 Pro.

We don't even know, but before further derail, Sony is one of the last companies you will say that needs some quick cash to cover the losses of one bomb. There's a reason the quarter from Concord's launch (Q2, FY 2024) was still one of its most profitable ever.

Emulation =/= Piracy, I think GAF has been over this many-a-times.

People who pirate games don't represent all emulation users.

Ah the good old "digital open borders" argument... we don't know who they are but we're sure they are all fine, law-abiding folks!

Disregarding that, downloading an .iso is way less effort than transferring from BD-Rom... especially when, lets face it, the hardware isn't something every PC owner has!

And sorry, but unless you've been sleeping under a rock for the past few years you'd notice Piracy under the guise of emulation is pretty big these days. I've lost count at the number of YT videos showing HDD's of up to 12Tb in size, fully loaded with games up to including cracked versions of modern PC ports of console titles being sold by Chinese vendors on Amazon.

Even disregarding all the above; as I noted Lance in his own video ADMITS to back-porting code from Dark Souls 3 in order to make the patch. That's straight-up illegal. Period.

And my point about future loss of earning is just common-sense inference: If a "free" option exists, then it stands against motivation for an official port because you can't compete against free. And like it or not, charging is not unreasonable given that developing a port is going to have an actual price-tag attached for anyone who does it!

I'm so tired of arguing this topic. Unless you are willing to look at the pro's and con's of the situation from the perspective of the actual IP holders as well as that of the "community", its definitionally bad faith argumentation based entirely on supporting your own self-interest.

Its not "corporate boot-licking" to point these inconvenient truths out either. Before some joker tips-up to throw that one at me.
