Sega has filed trademarks for 'Ecco' and 'Ecco the dolphin'

Weird. I don't think the franchise was that popular.

Maybe Sega received a quick buck from greenpeace or climate change activists... 😘😂

The Dreamcast game was a pure beauty and the DC Ecco 2 alpha version is possibly one of the the prettiest title of the 6th gen.
(I also like the Sega CD BGM...not very fan of the genesis game though.Exploring the deep waters on DC was much more colorful, appealing in 3D)

Don't like underwater levels in any 2d game.

Mario absolutely didn't wanna be there without a frog suit. But when you're a dolphin, you hate flailing around on land.

There's no excuse for TMNT though. They should be more comfortable in the water, dammit. Where did they put Raph when he got beat up in the movie?? A BATH TUB!

Defender of the Future with the cinematic camera was amazing and the animations were incredible, and still are.

Just like the 2D games, I never really progressed with the story. I'd just swim around and chill sometimes.

I can't wait to hurt this dolphin.

I remember freaking my sister out by making it jump out of water on the genesis. Now I'll freak out my daughter.

Hmmmm. I guess I haven't grown up.

I've been waiting for a follow up to Ecco for decades now. Spooky, eerie alien invasions never go out of style. This was a straight up horror game to me as a kid.

This was a hardcore game. I can understand why many people wouldn't enjoy it because it could sometimes be too hard and the game doesn't exactly hold your hand and guide you from A to B.
That's actually my fear for the new games: I don't want SEGA to remake their hardcore games into casual games. We will see!

When you compare the two, Ecco looked a generation behind DKC on the SNES, and DKC was the better game as well

How come they never rereleased the Dreamcast Ecco game? It looks interesting AF and the graphics do still hold up.
They did on the PS2. Dont know about anywhere else. The PS2 version had a few improvements to the gameplay experience .... You could easily get and play that game or even emulate it and kick the graphics resolution UP a bit. It did not exactly keep everything that made the first games great but it was OK. it wasnt like a sequel or a remaster, just a whole new reimagined ecco. Very beautiful at the time of its release though.

Ecco came out YEARS before DKC and you should consider comparing the 2nd game , Tides of time, which had better graphics (more like the graphics on the CD version of ecco)... But yeah those are totally different games.

I would have liked to see the series continue in 3D. But this is actually a nice looking remake...or reboot? of the original game.

Are they using Unity engine, or UE4/5?

Dude... Ecco is an action-adventure game not a platformer like DKC. (released years later)

I consider the original Ecco to be a puzzle game, at its core. But it does have adventure elements.

Tides of Time for the Sega CD was one of the earliest games I remember seeing that had CG animated cutscenes. As grainy as they were with the shitty Sega CD colour pallet, I'm pretty sure they were produced on an SGI workstation. Not bad for 1994.

The original Ecco the Dolphin was a classic. It was pretty tough, but I did finish it. It's weird because even though a lot of the games from that era were hard as nails, I managed to complete the majority of the ones that I enjoyed.

Anyway, for its time the visuals were great, as were the music and sound effects. It was a seriously moody game with a superb atmosphere.

That doesn't necessarily mean I want to see a reboot though, as it was a game of its time.
Came to say this. They were unique games that had a lot of good qualities. They were just bastard hard.

Edit: wasn't there a failed Kickstarter a few years back from the original creator of echo for a remake or sequel?

Maybe a hot take, but Ecco was never good.

I disagree, I really liked the one to PS2. It nailed the feeling of swimming like a dolphin and I'd spend a lot of time just jumping out of the water or swimming upside down. It was a pretty chill game, but it had this weird unsettling undercurrent that gave the game a certain atmosphere.

I recall ecco, that's the first time i saw my first AAA graphic in video games back then. Looks so real by my 90s standard. I almost forgot this game existed. I tthink will want to replay this game

Probably just renewing the trademark. Not news.

Ed Annunziata (creator of Ecco) already revealed that there is a new Ecco game in development, here:

There was a Kickstarter for some sort of spiritual successor to Ecco that was going to be called "The Big Blue", s Ed does not own the Ecco IP.

It's a game that I always wanted to buy at the time. It seemed to have a sort of cult appeal surrounding it, then the PS1 came along and it was completely forgotten about by everyone.

Things I'm looking forward to in the new Ecco:
  • Oil spills
  • Drift netting
  • Floating garbage island
  • Being stuck in a pool at SeaWorld and having to do tricks for dead fish
Game of the Year

Ecco 1 and 2 still get re-releases in Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive compilations and their mini 'classic' systems. The Japanese Sega Genesis Mini 2 came bundled with the Sega CD versions of Ecco 1 and 2. Plus, the games were also ported to PC back in the day.

Ecco : Defender of the Future was developed for the Dreamcast originally, but did get a PS2 port. There was a sequel in development called Ecco II: Sentinels of the Future. But it was cancelled.

Also, interestingly enough, Appaloosa Interactive also made a Jaws licensed game for the PS2 called Jaws Unleashed, which used the Defenders of the Future PS2 engine.

Can't wait for the DLC, eccos trip to the canning factory

Are you sure ? Is it official or is he just hinting at a new game ?

It's not official media from Sega. Ed Annunziata posted that .gif a few hours after Sega announced renewing the IP. He didn't explain where it came from. Sega did anounce that they are developing a new Ecco the Dolphin game, quite a while back, so there is a high likelihood that Ed is in charge or overseeing the project. It looks like a WIP version of a new Ecco game.. or a remake or a reboot...

Also, interesting that Tom Kalinske reposted that tweet (errr... x).

Do you have a link ?
Tom Kalinske retweeting the gif is interesting though.

I guess I don't. For some reason, I thought Ecco was one of the franchises announced a couple years ago, when Sega made claim that they were reviving some of their old IP's.
There are a lot. (Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Monkey Ball, Virtua Fighter)

On top of that, Sega said "More" are coming in the VGA trailer.

Unfortunately, Ecco isn't exactly the most popular and bankable IP. (but who knows?)

Mentioned in recent financial reports as evaluated IPs and simultaneously seen in recent trademarks, the following franchises could be the next revivals:

After Burner
Outrun
Altered Beast

Sega also had filed trademarks for Eternal Champions, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon

I don't know if Ecco has a good sales pipeline but I suspect people don't like playing with real animals.
