She texted, we kicked her out

I just find it sad that apparently people are incapable of turning off their phone for just 2 hours.

Unless you're a doctor or surgeon on 24 hour call in or something along those lines you can live without your phone for 2 hours.

I HATE texters in movies. The phones are SOOO bright it immediately distracts.

However...

I do very much appreciate it when douchbag texters at least cover up their phone when they get a text. I give you one free pass (meaning turn that shit off after the first text) and assume you learned.

What I hate worse is people who bring children to R-Rated movies, or violent action loud ass movies. I got into a screaming match with a guy I work with over this because he told me him and his wife were taking their newborn baby to the last twilight premiere.
He was doing everyone a favor. The infant's cries would be more nuances and subtle than Bela's dialogue. As long as he kept the infant from crying when she wasn't talking, nobody would have noticed.

Sorry but a movie theater screen illuminates the entire theater. Does your theater somehow manage to stay pitch dark while a movie is playing?

Have any of your discreet texts ever been to let someone know where to find you in the audience after the lights went down? Why would they need to know this?

Warning: This may be a trick question.

Bonus question: Would they be able to spot you if you held up your cell phone?

The worst is sitting next to some asshole who clearly does not wear deodorant. I don't like having to move to another vacant seat God knows where just because of some greasy haired prick.
Then he won't put down his Gamestop bag, crinkling that plastic all in your ear during the important plot scenes.

People who take babies or small children who can't behave (to non children's movies) are the worst. It makes you wonder if they have any sense at all.

I still remember seeing Inglorious Bastards at the Ritz downtown and was completely blown away when they unfurled a series of huge Nazi banners down the side of the theater, perfectly timed with the theater entrance scene in the movie. Why, I almost spilled my second pitcher of beer at the time (and even then, the theater was still quiet).

Really, it's that kind of theater.
That's pretty amazing.

I don't mind someone who occasionally texts/uses his phone during a movie but constant use is annoying for those behind you. Smart phones are really bright and are distracting.

The light from a cell phone during a film is a pisser. Worst in stadium seating situations because the person isn't blocking the light from their device. It is distracting as hell and I keep looking to see what idiot it is who can't pay attention to the film they paid.

If you can't do without your phone for the 2 hours a movie runs for you shouldn't have gone in the first place. Before cell phones existed people were able to do this all the time.

You know how you're driving around at night and you drive head on towards someone with their high beams on? Cell phones are that glaring to me when it gets whipped out during a movie.

The old Ritz location is my favorite too. They're always pulling little magical touches out of their hats.

I'm going Thursday Night to see The Rock. "Tough Guy Cinema" nights are a riot. I'm gonna shoot some shit with my cap gun.

*slow clap*

Man, i wish my local theaters did the same! Seriously, some people have no shame! During the latest PotC-movie some random girl started to talk in the phone... about the movie!!

hipsters getting their knickers in a twist...

oh noes, that several inch light is distracting me from the 30 foot giant screen

They crapped out a thing they don't know how to properly manage. That's your answer right there. :\

Why do you need to text if you're incapable of reading?

(I ask ironically)

Fucking stupid. People that let texting bother them during a movie are pathetic. Are people really so ADD-ridden that a few seconds of a small, glowing light in their peripheral distracts them? Petty.

Almost knocked a guy out over bothering me about this shit (pulled out the phone ONCE). God, I wish that were me. No way in hell would they get me to leave that theater without giving me my money back.
And also, people who let assault bother them in a movie are pathetic.

That was my only point. I just don't understand how this is an issue, but the overwhelming responses in this thread against have convinced me to pause and look around a lot more next time I'm at the movies. I honestly want to see what I've been missing this whole time.

I'm not trying to be cheeky. I honestly have just never noticed a phone screen come on before in a theater while watching a bright 100 foot theater screen. So I'm going to pay more attention next time.

Perhaps you should read the thread? Clearly, people are bothered by the light from it. It appears those that text during the movie are in here trying defend their actions asking how it bothers people... they answer and the answer is ignored.

If you go to a theater with stadium seating I don't understand how you haven't seen a bright iPhone screen lit up below you.

You only go to movies that are filmed in daytime, I presume.

Hahahaha, ok, I won't get anywhere with this. Everyone's just saying the same things over and over again.

End of the day, I'll just accept that some lights bother all of you, and they don't bother some of us. I can make peace with that.

Bullshit. Put the fucking phone down for two hours. You're not that important and nobody else who paid money to see the movie should be subjected to distractions and annoyances because you have a tremendous entitlement complex.

Almost knocked a guy out over bothering me about this shit (pulled out the phone ONCE). God, I wish that were me. No way in hell would they get me to leave that theater without giving me my money back.

So basically you're the reason people hate going to movie theaters these days. Bravo.

Again... what?

This makes no fucking sense. Who wouldn't be bothered by assault?

The talking this is pretty much a huge problem I had in the U.S (except at the excellent Arclight). American audiences don't know how to shut the fuck up in a theatre unless they're paying top dollar in my experience.

In theatres here you'll get somebody talking once in a while, but not something you should have to factor into your decision-making about whether you want to see something at the movies.

You and your kind are the reason i rarely go to the cinema.

Kimosabae said:

You would not get your money back. It's a private establishment that warns that after repeated warnings you will be removed and will not be refunded. If you refused to leave, they'd just call the cops and have you hauled away for trespassing. Is that worth $10?

If you get kicked out of any place and don't leave when they tell you to, you're in for a world of hurt, regardless of whether or not you've paid to get in. They don't refund idiots who fight at sporting events and get kicked out.

Good. You won't be missed.

I can understand if the phone in view is chronically visible and is in direct view, but this is rarely, if ever the case. The phone is typically out for a few seconds and in your peripheral, unless you're so obsessed with the phenomenon, you're staring at it directly - in which case the problem lies with you. People understand smartphones are bright and typically attempt to shelter them when texting in theaters. I see this everytime I visit a theater and only ONCE has it bothered me - it was the first time I realized how bright those things can be in a dark theater. I was only irked momentarily.

This is the technologically inclined world you live in. If you're willing to let the truly infinitesimal and innocuous behaviors of other people distract you from enjoying social entertainment events: do stay home. For the sake of humanity, we beg you.

Things I hate:

People who bring loud kids to movies that are not appropriate. If your kid can STFU cool, however, we all know you don't bring a six month old to a midnight release of an action movie.

Texting during the movie or previews. Nothing worse than seeing a big ass bright light in the middle of a movie. It is distracting.

and people that continually text or talk while watching a movie. Not just at the theatres. It's right there with people that surf the internet while watching a movie and then ask what is going on.

Quite the opposite. This theatre begs YOU to stay home and if you don't and decide to not follow the posted rules, then you'll be removed. It's a big selling point as you can see.

How about they follow the fucking rules? They are there for a reason.

It's also a sign of disrespect to those around you and the filmmaker.

Umm, no. Maybe for some backwater theater in Austin, Texas, but not where I live. Sorry to disappoint you.

I'm going to see Thor tomorrow. PM me your phone number, so I can update you via text, how not-kicked-out I am from moment to moment.

We'll see the internet article tomorrow night after you assault someone for telling you to follow the rules.

The big Arclights in Los Angeles, the top line cinemas in Los Angeles considered to be some of the best in the entire nation, have a rule against cell phones being used as well as people arriving late. You will be kicked out.

It's not just for backwater USA, it's also in the prime movie theaters of Hollywood.

I'll keep enjoying my little backwater theatre that is widely considered to be the best in the country and you keep enjoying missing out on it.

Answer me this: Why do you think theatres ask patrons to turn their cell-phones off? Should the patrons who follow the rules for the sake of their movie experience really be the ones that should stay at home?

Of course there is, but it doesn't come with the threat/stipulation of removing people from the theater without refund for being caught texting on their phones.

Seriously, I'd much rather deal with people silently communicating via an intermittently illuminated screen I can ignore, easily, than them talking, which is much less plausible to ignore. Don't see how texting isn't the concession that sees everyone winning, unless you're a fucking deer at the movie theater. People with an actual, relatively busy social circle shouldn't be forced to go completely incommunicado for 2hrs because some people are easily distracted by bright lights. Ridiculous.

Maybe I'm just being "out there," but I assumed the concession was everyone shutting the fuck up and turning off their phones until the movie is over.

Is it really so hard to do both?

what? really? How did people with social lives in the 50's-90's ever get through a movie without ever calling their friends? THEY FUCKING WAITED!

exactly...loud talking is much much more annoying.

this whole jihad against texting in theatres seems more an ageist tirade.

ie: young people on their mobile phone, no respect for society etc

if its such an inconsequential matter ....harden the fuck up

I've got a shitty phone btw...barely text at all

Erm, how about because the whole reason the no talking rule exists is because it DISTRACTS PEOPLE from the film they have paid to see. So how is being distracted by another form of rule-breaking inconsideration 'winning' exactly?

If your social circle is so busy and integral to your life to the point where you can't unplug for two hours, then it should be you that stays at home, rather than acting like an inconsiderate (am I allowed to say cunt?) cunt and ruining a film for many others who don't share the same perspectives as you. That is what being considerate is, it isn't adhering to what would only reduce offense to yourself, it is recognizing that other people are adversely affected by something (and in this case a set of etiquette is even formerly asked of you) and acting in the interest of not offending them.

texting isnt nearly as annoying as talking, but when someone pulls out their phone i usually notice it and look at them, but then try not to pay attention anymore.
