Silent Hill 2 |OT| You promised you'd take me there again someday...

That’s new to me. Looks wonderful.

Taking notes.
I like it hyper-gothic and contrary to what people think, legit Gothic flicks like Black Sunday etc. are actually not THAT numerous. So this one scratches that itch. Also Mrs. Steele is fantastic.
Bruh. All day. Especially Bava, Blood and Black Lace is mind blowing with the shots and colors. That shit is from 1964, it is absolutely insane how well it's filmed.
Blood & Black Lace is one of my favorite Italian flicks. The more stylized and dramatic, the better.

Honestly, some budget constraints aside, this is right on par with RE2 remake. Especially considering that the original game was never a big-budget action-oriented game in the first place. They've nailed the reworked pacing, new locations, atmosphere, sound, music (yay! Yamaoka!), voiceover and overall feel. Rarely does new games captivate me so easily, let alone remakes.

And listen, I genuinely hate Bloober's output prior to SH2, but I really struggle to find a real palpable fault here. There are some things that can be too janky or strange for a modern gamer, but they are the parts that made Silent Hill 2 so memorable.

Plus, god, I REALLY enjoy new voice acting. Especially James and Maria/Mary. That scene behind the bars? Pure shivers. Plus, there are tonsof very subtle (and not so subtle) nods to the series all around you. This game is packed to the brim with warmth and care, it's really a love message to franchise from very passionate lifelong fans.

I'm replaying it alright, to see the Dog ending. Thank you, Bloober.

I think that with this remake Bloober made the decisión that SH2 is a loop and James is death. And the endings (except UFO and Dog) are diferent ways that James "end" that loop. That explain the music when you see the parts of the original.

I really really love the background of the menu. So great detail

So is anyone else still slightly pissed about part 2 of coin puzzle on hard? It legit made no sense in any capacity. It's the only riddle all game I've been forced to look up, and the answer was senseless.

That or I'm dumb, which is possible. Either way, I feel stained having had to look up an answer like an inbred.

Finished. Took me about 22 hours.
What a game! I didnt think anything was going to come close to Wukong as my GotY but its damn close now. Yes the graphics are amazing (played on PC with RT on and 4K) and the sound is bar none (play with headphones at night to shit your pants), but its the atmosphere that takes it to the next level. The most atmospheric game I've ever played, with the most mature story I've seen tackled in this medium. I now know why the original game lovers are so obsessed. This game makes you feel like you've been to fog-filled, soaked, damp and cold streets of Silent hill, and then you've been to hell and back. Absolutely blown away.

"In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent hill."

The puzzle with the blind lady, man/sword, and snake? Maybe, but not as far as I know. I was able to context clue part 1 and 3, but not two. How did you do it?
I remember one poem has something to do with the previous one so you had to keep that in mind? Might have been that one

Edit: yeah that's the one:

"His blade strikes that which from the roots doth rise,
followed by guilt and the mark of demise.

The life he once had (=position in poem 1) he has left behind,
where once there was love, now a stone resides."

I finished the game yesterday. Here are a list of mods I recommend everyone use.

  • Ultra Plus Fixes and Visual Improvements This is the single most important mod you can install. It improves practically every aspect of the visual experience. Better ray tracing. Better hair rendering. Better black levels. The list of changes is vast.
  • Less Shiny Hair Gets rid of James's shiny hair by replacing the actual hair textures.
  • No-Intro Just a basic intro movie skip mod. Standard stuff.
  • Classic Health Indicator Replace the low health vignette with the classic red cross in the corner.
  • Clean Flashlight Cleans up the flashlight texture to get rid of the dirt/grime that's present on the stock version.
  • Original Jacket for James Adds the patches back to James's jacket.
  • OG Menu Sounds Adds in the iconic menu sounds from the original SH2.
I also did the usual engine.ini tweaks to remove chromatic aberration, film grain, etc.

Why is everyone using the classic health indicator mod? James' bloody jacket is a good indicator itself (it gets more bloodied as his health gets lower). It worked perfectly for me.
There is also his movement which gets more laborious as his health goes lower.

I can't remember how but I ended up solving it. Part 2 however sticks in my mind as a big wtf as well so you're not alone. I'm unsure if I solved Part 2 by just fuckinf around or actual thought.

Playing this reminds me of how I miss games like these, they really don't make them like this anymore (except for this)
Also I keep hearing people bring up lack of budget
Come On What GIF by MOODMAN

Sure the game has a few bugs like any release, but in term's of quality I think Konami had a blank cheque for Bloober, Akira Yamaoka & Masahiro Ito.
This is strong release in every sense of the word.
Actually curious how much it cost Konami.

I have a lot to say once I'm done with the game, but I can give you a teaser of the theme; "Silent Hill 2 Remake confirms that feels dated critiques have always been gatekeeping BS"

Seems like some riddles are randomised even within the same difficulty. I just got to the Xray riddle in the hospital. I found one on the table and two were on already on the wall. Then I died and had to replay like 20 minutes and when I came to the same section there was no Xray on the wall.

Come to think of it… I hope it’s not a bug…

A guy in a Discord group I'm in called this "too game-y". THAT takes the cake. It's too much of a videogame. Actually enjoyable to play. Fuck this game.

It's crazy what some people will come up with.

Some of my posts might seem overly critical of the game but I really don't feel that way. It's a visual/audio masterpiece all day. I hope my eventual thread will bring a good discussion and help people to view some games in a different light.

Part one answer:
Man, blank, blank, tombstone, snake

Part two answer:
tombstone, sword, flower, blank, blank

The life he once had left behind makes sense, but he becomes a sword. The tombstone isn't even where the woman he loved is, it's all the way to the left where he was (I guess he had love there and not with her for some reason?).

Were you able to make sense of the root doth rise? I would have thought the sword was going to be placed at the base of the tree where the roots are, but for some reason it was off to the left. Instead, you place a flower at the roots. Wtf is with the flower? I could see that being the mark of demise (like leaving flowers at a grave), but the poem makes it seem like that's two spaces away from the sword instead of right next to it (and they should have "guilt" between them).

The glowing of the PS5 controller is a god tier health indicator too. It goes from green to orange to red to blinking orange/red. Multiple tiers of indication.

I'm keeping the UI as minimal as possible.

If anything by today's standards is not so game-y.
Switch to retro interface and I imagine a lot of people being lost.
Which is good.

Just defeated abtract daddy. It was very intense, I absolutely loved it. The fight was definitely designed by Bloober, it has Layers and Blair Witch written all over it.

Soilers: The small closet you retreat to throughout is Angela's 'safe' space. Her teddy bear is there with a blanket and a family photo of the three of them with the father torn off

Angela is my favorite character (she also was in the original) but in the remake she's even better and the actress done a phenomenal job. The cast for this have just been so good all around and really knocked it out of the park.

I knew from the announcement Bloober would make GOTY. I didn't expect them to make game of the genre though.

I removed all health indicator vignettes and mods. The menu screen shows the health deterioration in the background. It becomes more red the lower the health. Also, James walks lethargically when more hurt. So there are enough signs to work out health.

Just finished the game, got the In Water ending just like in my OG playthrough, I only played it once, yeah yeah I know, but I didn't feel like playing it again, this one though I'll play again for sure and try other endings.
Fucking amazing, I can't remember the last time I felt so much dread while playing a game. Between this and Astro Bot I honestly don't care which one wins goty, I'll be happy with either one. I just hope one of them wins.

And I sure as hell hope Luke Roberts wins best performance, what an amazing portrayal of James... I actually felt bad for him this time, when I played the OG I just remember being amused with the absurdity of it all when the final twist was revealed.

Now I'll just be waiting for STALKER 2 and hope it has some scary vibes but man, Dead Space Remake, Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2 Remake, all excellent horror games releasing within the span of 2 years (coupled with some amazing AA and indies as well like Amnesia The Bunker), we horror fans have been eating good.

And James' jacket, like I said above. It gets bloodier the lower the health.

I do like how they done hair in this game, mainly in cutscenes.
Probably the best I've seen.
On to Maria, I still would have preferred the OG outfit but she's grown on me.
She also walks and does gestures just like the original which is interesting that they mimicked the original so closely.

Eesh, fuck that hospital section, creepy as fuck. I'm calling it a night.

What a game, never played anything where the environment and music were more scary than the actual enemies. GOAT atmosphere.
Yeah, I think my head is making the game way scarier than it is.
The enemy variety is pretty small so I kinda know what to expect at this point and how to kill them. Still, I feel uneasy whenever I enter a new room.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Oh my god they actually did it lol

edit: spoiler tags mean spoilers, big one's here.

Mary's body *is* in the back seat, you can clearly see something covered by a tarp.

Damn, the enemies hit hard in this (or James is a weakling), 2 hits from the starter enemies and he's already limping.

I dont understand why after the hospital, the game throws at you so many supplies and ammo, I have like 20 health kits, another 20 drinks, and more than 100 bullets of ammo. I think Bloober should fix this, it doesnt feel right in a survival horror. I am playing on medium difficulty tho, does the games gives you less supplies on hard?
