Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Big oof:

"Compulsion Games says that while they expect gameplay to be engaging, it isn't nearly as much of a focus as the story, music, and other elements they've clearly put the lion's share of work into. Instead, they're keeping levels relatively short for a ten-ish hour story and putting all of their chips into South of Midnight's exceptional presentation and worldbuilding".

I'm a fan of the setting, not really enough games explore that part of America or the legends and mythology thereof. Let's see how it plays out.

10 hour story mode is big oof?

Seems fine to me for a game like this, closer to Kena's length than a 20 hour bloated one.

Yeah, pass for me. Another studio more interested in making a movie than a game.

Just by looking at the developers i can tell this game's going to be meeeh

Even more when some of them are saying how we need more games with young and powerful black women.

No ty, another flop incoming

Graphically it is beautiful from a graphic and artistic point of view, I love it. As far as the gameplay is concerned, they don't show much in depth.

Very good presentation and leaves me with good feelings. I see a new IP trying something with a certain originality. And that is in short supply today

PS. The only flaw is the popping that can be seen in some scenes that I hope will be solved all or to a large extent in the final game. In the gameplay of the XBOX game Show it was not appreciated.

In before "woke".
Game looks pretty decent.
I'm as anti-woke as it gets, but this game doesn't seem to be headed that direction so far other than being a black cast of characters. I guess we'll know more once dialogue gets out there. Sweet Baby is involved so it could be a mess, but at least this is a new IP, and we aren't shoving diversity into an old IP.

This project looks like a unique game.

10 hours is not really an issue as long as it's priced appropriately. If anything, it becomes an advantage for it.

Even if this is true, what a terrible quote to give to a journalist.

Frustrating that a game that is so artistically unique has such bland gameplay mechanics. Gameplay will always be king for the majority of gamers

That's a good looking game. I love the style.

I need to make sure to play nothing else when I buy this. My guess it's going to be jarring if you like to switch between games and this one is in your rotation.

They've got the priority list hanging upside down in their offices it seems.

2024 release and a focus on representation?
Good luck

Art is nice though. But I don't like the stop motion animation style, just looks like constant framerate stutter.

We are starting to see this wave of games coming out that were green lighted in the 2020-2021 time period and are just entering a totally different world and will not find the reception they were looking for. This looks like one of them.

Xbox loves these kinds of personality/style-driven AA games. I don't disagree, necessarily, I love stuff like Hi-Fi Rush and Hellblade, but I wonder if they're not blunting their impact by not pushing for something a little bigger than an 8-10 hour experience.

Even Astro Bot, as great as it is, is just in another realm from Sony's bigger offerings.

I mean it's a game based around Southern US lore, a black cast should be the norm, not 'diverse', in this case.

The bigger studios like Coalition are doing their thing, this is from a studio whose only made two small 8~10 hour games before as well.

It looks and sounds great, really interested. If they manage to get the combat loop to be satisfying even if not overly complex then I'll be a happy camper

Oh boy, and I assume next you'll be telling me there were only white people in ancient Greece!

Do you think only black people live in the south or something? I don't mind the choice, but a story about Southern lore only starring black characters is not "the norm."

No, of course not to your first question, but the lore, musical cues and everything that they are showing in the trailers seems to be very heavily inspired by black folks inspired tales, so it just makes more sense to me as a viewer.

i absolutely hate the framerate decision they made here, it hurts my eyes.

Better suited for a movie, but not a game imo

I believe it's the art style and purposful jerky movement of characters and world that's making the framerate look unstable and not reflective of the actual framerate.
