South of Midnight - Reviews Thread

I'll preface this by saying I hated Hellblade, and played both for about 15 minutes each, but it's really annoying that some people can't accept not every game is built for them, and gaming needs more experimental games, more risky games. I'm glad Hellblade got funded and released, even if I'm not going to play it. I'm not sure if I'll like South of Midnight, we'll see, but I like that these less 'blockbuster' style games are given room to exist, not least because I find the Sony output that people seem to love so much (the third person adventures at least) to be the gaming equivalent of a Fast and the Furious movie - technically competent, but largely pandering and soulless affairs. I can feel like that, but still be glad they exist and happy for the people that enjoy them.

I've really enjoyed Indy, Avowed and even Starfield so Game Pass is fantastic for me. I wish people would stop sucking the fun out of gaming. I need to stop reading it, but I come for the news, not the opinion as much as anything.
Hellblade 2 is more of an arthouse project.

No idea why it would be confused with summer blockbuster type of games.

Its an actual walking sim.

As per IGN's and GS's scales, those scores are not accurate. It puts most of these games in the 'Good' category. Yet none of these games can be considered 'Good' by anyone. Every single one of these games - maybe with the exception of Biomutant - is considered atrociously bad by pretty much everyone.

Eh....why are you dictating opinions dude?

What makes Concord an atrocious game?

I have a few highly rated games that have more “atrocious” elements like gameplay and movement.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Yeah there's some weird thought policing going on here, lol.

Nah, I'm just talking about the general consensus, based on the aggregated scores.

Does the majority of people really think that Concord, Redfall, Destruction All-Stars, and Suicide Squad are 'good' games? lol. Wouldn't they be more successful if they were considered good games? Or wouldn't more people be playing them right now if they were considered good games by the majority of gamers out there?

The proof is in the pudding.

Nothing to defend, the guy is labelling a game as mediocre without even touching it, just a troll. You've come in with a nothing post with absolutely nothing to add to the conversation, why even bother?

There are some reviews that say it's mediocre and they've played it.

If you want me to post some more reviews, here you go:

I posed this question to my partner who was sitting on the couch scrolling IG reels throughout my time playing south of midnight and I asked her who she thought this game was for and she as a very Casual Gamer responded that it's for casual gamers so I thought okay would you buy this or play this she said no.

Which unfortunately leaves south of midnight to be just another game pass game to add to the catalog that you can play when you get around to it.

I wish that compulsion Games took more risks here tried to make something totally new for the Xbox library, but ultimately south of midnight just ends up being another game on the Xbox game pass catalog.

Enjoy.

That has basically been my point every time people get mad about me calling any game mediocre.
I can't speak on behalf of those mad, but I think it may be less about calling it mediocre, and maybe more about the constant pressing in a thread about the game you think is mediocre / you don't care about, lol. Personally, I've never bothered. I'm just happy that people can find games they enjoy, regardless of how I feel about them. 🤷‍♂️

Seems like the majority think most of those games are just "ok" or "fair", as the scores indicate. That's a step down from "good". Like I said, just being "ok" or "fair" isn't good enough these days. Even great games can fail financially. A game being just "ok" can mean the end of a studio. Either way, reviews are incredibly subjective and there is very little accuracy involved, just opinions.

That's the thing, people think I'm attacking the game in question or saying it isn't enjoyable.

You are not only attacking this game, but all of Xbox games. Doesn't take much to go through your post history in this thread.

I don't understand why would somebody make twenty posts to a thread about a game you will never play while dictating what is considered good or not. But keep on displaying your bias here.

And, please, don't try to say next that you are not biased.

I challenge you to go through my post history and look up what I said about Hellblade 2 and the upcoming Fable.

Edit:

And Blops 6 and the rumored Oblivion Remake.

Most of those 20 posts are me responding to butthurt people quoting me.
If multiple people do that, you easily get to 20 posts.

Is there a setting to turn off the hack and slash combat and skip it? Perhaps a story mode? I just want to do the platforming and see the world.
I'm completely burned out of the hack and slash genre.

The few minutes of a twitch stream someone posted here was just the protag wall running jumping back and forth (Jedi Survivor/Fallen Order style) on the same surfaces over and over again and jumping from same looking cliff to same looking cliff over and over.

It just looked...boring as shit. And samey. Nothing stood out at all. Cheeky backdoors not withstanding.

But hey if you play and enjoy it rock the fuck on. There's plenty of "duds" out there that I enjoyed immensely (like Biomutant and Immortals of Aveum)

There is a difficulty setting called Story that tones the combat down but I don’t think there’s anything that removes it altogether. You can do custom difficulty too and make the combat as easy as possible.

Yes, there is an option like that in the game.
Yep. It's an accessibility setting. Turning it on will prompt you to skip combat entirely, wherever possible

I wonder why Atomfall, a game with a similar (lower even) MC to this, never got half as much attention from those that don’t need named? Can’t quite put my finger on it. 😂

Pretty decent score. This never truly appealed to me, but the beauty of Gamepass is I get to try it regardless. And I may be pleasantly surprised like I was with Avowed!

I like dunking on bombs as much as the next person but let's wait until the 8th when the game is actually out, anyone playing it now are those who paid extra for early access or got review codes.
i mean, what do you think it could happen?

Even if we expect a 300% increase at release date, we are taking about 2000 CCU.

Indiana Jones had like a 140% increase (stablished IP and better reviews scores).

this game is cooked

Show me the groups of Nintendo and PlayStation fan sites all over MC that are always over the averages for their games.

Just a quick check on the last Sony game on MC and it looks like this:

PlayStation Universe
PlayStation Lifestyle
Push Square
MeuPlaystation
PSX

I’m sure I could find more if I looked any deeper and I probably missed some sites that aren’t obvious. It’s not hard to find sites that rank games sometimes even just a few points higher. And there will always be more PlayStation fan sites because there are more PlayStation fans. It’s a silly thing to try and nitpick reviews about.

Dont stop at posting the names, also post the scores and the increase from the average meta score.

Are you not tired of shitposting?

So true. The art style of avowed really turned me off during previews. Game is really a hidden gem. Everything is pretty average but loving the world and it's way of making you explore with its rewards. It's a breathe of fresh air with alot of vertical exploration.

I know websites exist.

Okay, so some early impressions:

POSITIVES:
  • The game looks pretty. Visuals are good.
  • Looks unique and has its own charm.
  • I thought I would not like the stop-motion style, but it's fine.
  • Game performance is good.
  • The environmental effects are well done.
  • I haven't encountered any bugs so far.
NEGATIVES:
  • The writing is truly awful. It looks like it was written with AI or by a teenager. The less said about it, the better.
  • As it is a platformer, there is a lot of jumping and running in the game. And both running and jumping have atrociously bad animations. So you'll be seeing bad animations for most of the playing time.
  • Movement feels very floaty (and not in a good way).
  • Cutscenes are 30 FPS, and it always felt jarring going from high FPS to 30 FPS suddenly.
  • Some weird QoL oddities. For example, you interact with objects in the game, but the game does not give you back the controls automatically when the interaction is done. You've to press a key. It's a bizarre design choice.
  • Early game, but I've already encountered a few forced walking sections.
