To say a bit more about the subject of yuribait, a lot of shows kind of are in a no-win situation. I mean, what are their options?

(Note: This would mostly work perfectly in reverse with yaoibait and guys, I think)

What most shows do: Have most of the girls (or guys) who are in the main cast be straight, but ... bi-curious, I guess you could put it, so that they have both yuri/yaoibait and also romance with the opposite-sex main character Alternatively, have a single-gender cast where the yuri/yaoi-bait is the only romance-hinting you get.

The problem: For either of those situations, that leads to a very unrealistic number of gay/bi characters versus reality, and creates a situation where there is lots of same-sex stuff in the series purely for fanservice reasons. I often like some of these shows, for instance Saki's a favorite of mine, but it sure does have an unrealistic proportion of girls interested in other girls. :p

But what's the alternative? You don't want them to mostly just be straight, that'd be boring and hurt your ratings! Few girls groping eachother, yuri-goggles incidents, etc? Who'd want that?

So, in the fanservice goes, even if it makes no logical sense.

I don't want no yuri in anime; I like the stuff. I would just rather see more plausible characters, and less stereotyped stupidity. For instance, "Every single girl in the main cast just happens to have never had a boyfriend" is such a comically convenient thing so many animes like to do, for instance... I know why (they must stay pure!) but it's silly. (My issue here is the "every single" part.) I mean, I like fantasy in the setting, events, etc, but the extreme unrealism of the CHARACTERS in anime is an issue I have with it that just keeps coming back.

Of course, the other alternative would be to make a higher-quality show which actually takes its subject matter seriously, is well-written, etc (Wandering Son and such), but such things are incredibly uncommon because it's the otaku base who keep the industry afloat, not people who want something that actually respects the subject matter it's covering.

I do notice a lot of yuri baiting and pendering. Lots of boob groping, licking, longing looks, pouncing between girls. That stuff is damned obviously designed to pander. I dont think that this scene was really meant to do that in the context it was shown, but it cannot be ignored the subtle hints at something going on.
It doesnt always have to be overtly sexual to throw out those kinds of signals to people.

I have learned stuff from these kind of conversation about media, and I do think media is more important than people give it credit for, so I don't mind the discussion. Heck, I am cool about it. As far as I can tell everyone here is pretty cool. I love all these different perspectives. I am a gigantic nerd and love arguing, though, so I get it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I have no problem with discussion of different viewpoints. what I hate, and what happens A LOT in these threads, is looking down on other people for a differing opinion. Like saying they are sick or wrong or stupid. Implying some sort of moral high ground or superiority because of holding one particular belief or another. Thats as wrong as the things we argue about.
Frankly Im pretty sick of seeing it.

Shokugeki no Soma this week reminded me that Hinako is voiced by Mamiko Noto, so it's basically her reaction to Soma's food. I highly approve. Love the way the ED was incorporated into the show. Would have been better if they didn't go for the abrupt jump into the actual ED.

Yep, this is what I was going to post. Really good stuff.

If next weeks episode is the one I think it is from the preview many hnngs will be had.

Man, the preview got me hyped up for next week's episode.

For me it is more of a people having experiences and knowledge way too different and so understanding is hard to reach, you know? Those experience and knowledge will dictate what people care the most about. I have learned not to take those personally because in many cases, I have found that it is an understandable facet of the person, and it is not something people do due to some malice. For example, I have found that sometimes, issues that are not important to one person causes pain to another person and that person may not be aware he or she is causing the pain, and so the other person may lash out. Just my two cents. I understand your frustration, though.

Little Busters ep. 9-13
Ok, I hate myself right now. I just wasted my couple hours of gamimg time as I got stuck on the last arc. It was total craziness, no, literally. I got lost in the story and what was going on since thete was no real "supernatural" elements to the show (well, outside of that nonsensicle, funny and creative foreshadowing episode in the middle of Nishizono arc) Anyhow, in these episodes you really dig deep into Nishizono's psyche and damn does it get thought provoking. I kind of figured it out when Naoe mentioned he
saw her in the city when thinking about her, but the personality differences kinda gave it away.
What didn't make sense was the whole
shadow not being there stuff
were they just using that as a metaphor? You could make it work there, but then they added the
memory loss stuff when she wasn't there
I mean, didn't they cross the lines between mental and physical perception of someone there? Very thought provoking and definitely riveting, but I just gave up a gaming night because of that, lol. This is an excellent series so far as its tone is so much different than other shows..

My mind is still a little wonky right now.

Looks like I came back just at the right time. Awesome.

This weeks SNAFU and Soma were sooo good. More impressions on that tomorrow after work. For now, onto Nisekoi before I pass out.

They will.

On topic of not giving credit to proper characterization, it would be nice if people could call great female characters just that instead of 'best girl'. It's one of those terms that people use jokingly but via excessive usage and over time it has become this ubiquitous, no longer funny that doesn't have a clear meaning either.

When someone says "xyz is a great character" I understand that the character is supposed to be well written.

Calling a female character "best girl" though that's more ambiguous. Does that person mean she's a well written character? Or she'd make for a good girlfriend if she were real? It's someone to fantasize about? Does she fit your kind of fetish?

I mean for downright ecchi and poor harem works that term may be suited well enough. But it's partially because of that, that the term appears degrading when used for actually well written characters. 'Waifu' is of course one step worse.

Also, whether you consider it to be still a funny anime terminology or not, it really is a major turn off for anyone new getting into anime and see stupid terms like that being used widely, especially when you don't know who's actually using them somewhat seriously. And let's be honest, there's a bunch of people who really do seem to watch shows just to get fantasize their rocks off and tell us about their favorite waifu's. Dakimakuras are a thing after all. Though I'd assume there are few if any here on AnimeGAF.

Context etc. also always matters. So when someone I've come to know uses the term I have a easier time placing it than say I see a 30 comment tree on reddit where faceless people show their favorite waifus.

That is a legitimately amazing video though.

So did Nisekoi have a Madomagi parody in the manga itself, or is this a Shaft invention? The fact that it started with the Kyubey eyes made me want to watch the episode, but then I realized that it was Nisekoi and stopped. :p

From what I understand it was a joke extra in a volume of Nisekoi that somehow became its own thing in another magazine.

Wait, so there's a Nisekoi parody of Madomagi out there? Did that happen before Shaft picked up S1? This would be some weird convergence of coincidences if that's the case. lol

Okay so from what I can tell the original Magical Patissier Kosaki chan was an extra in volume 8 of the manga which released September 2013 and then a spin off based on that started late 2014.

Ah, they knew about the Shaft thing before, so maybe they were just doing that on purpose. lol

Exams been done for little over a week now so I've had time to catch up on anime after not watching much at all for months.

I think my favourite new series of this season has to be Kekkai Sensen. It reminds me of Baccano! in a lot of positive ways; it's got a great setting, animation is topnotch, and the music is pretty good too.

Level 2? Did they steal this leveling system from Baldur's Gate?
We got this post about Bells "All S" stats from the last episode. It covers the level, skill and stat systems pretty well.
To prepare for incoming questions of what the hell "all S" means, I'll info dump a bit.
Stats are rated in letters from I (i) up to A and then S above that. These correspond to the number values:
0-99 I (i)
100-199 H
200-299 G
300-399 F
400-499 E
500-599 D
600-699 C
700-799 B
800-899 A
900-999 S
These are applied to attributes: Strength, Endurance, Dexterity, Agility, Magic.
You gain stat increases by using the attributes, so if you hit people a lot, STR goes up. If you take a punch in the face, END goes up. Sneak attack, and DEX increases. Dodge, and AGI is boosted.
Magic is increased by using magical spells, which can be acquired by reading magical grimoires, basically spell books that get used up once read.
In addition, there are "development abilities", which are generally gained on level up. Usually you get a random assortment of choices, but they tend to be related to what you've been doing a lot of lately. There are abilities, like poison resistance, increased damage to beasts, or advanced smithing. They increase in power just like attributes, the more you use them. There are also "skills", which are actively triggered specials that can help you in various ways.
Leveling up is tricky business, and usually requires a "heroic feat", rather than just increasing stats. What exactly constitutes a feat is hazy, but it helps if you fight a monster much stronger than yourself, etc.
Once leveled, your power is virtually doubled, creating a massive gap between Adventurers of different levels, even though your attributes are all reset again. Every new level your attributes restart from I 0, but there are hints that previous level stats are carried over in some hidden form.
The anime's official website gives Bell's current stats as:
Lv 1
STR: S 982
END: S 900
DEX: S 988
AGI: SS 1049
MAG: B 751
This is before the minotaur fight, however.

I love the food reactions but more than that as a foodie I really love the food porn in this show. When it comes to shounen contests, I love a great cooking contest. Soma has absolutely filled the void that Yakitate Japan left.

This is very clever. Great amv.

That is a legitimately amazing video though.

Ill tell you what best girl is to me personally.
Best girl is the girl in a show which is the least aggravating to me, the most interesting or approachable, better written than other characters, cuter (to me), least toxic to the main character or others, and as a bonus is voiced by one of my favorite seiyuus. The girl reflecting the most of these traits for me is the best girl. It has nothing to do with the sexiest one or "waifu" material because those dont matter to me. Another thing that I do look for is which characters make for interesting figurines so Hestia loses quite immediately.

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO! Episode 9 – And, Yukinoshita Yukino Is...

Why no direct Hikki Hayato moments? I guess we did get that last scene
was hoping Hikki would run to him, but I guess he'll go to Irohas since the writing is kind of wanting to make Hikki x her canon. In any I think its strongly signaling hikki hayato as being possible too

Tobe x Hachi is the worst ship that girl could have said. Tobe is kind of annoying too.

Lupin III (Red Jacket) 1-51

I just finished what seems to be considered the first two "seasons" of the 2nd Lupin show. I wasn't fond of the initial episodes, but afterwards they seemed to strike a better balance between goofy Lupin and the worldwide famous criminal.

Like I said regarding the first season, something nice about Lupin's format is that he can actually lose or win. Although he obviously won't die, there's some tension involved in the success of his heists. The 2nd anime initially seemed to lose that balance, always featuring him losing the objects he tried to steal for several episodes straight, but after a while there was a more even distribution of losses and successes.

It's kind of odd that they seem to have created some kind of rule where Lupin can't kill people with guns, but we still see him killing people (although mostly villains) in other ways, like explosives or driving cars out of the road. Until... they throw away that rule and we see him firing a machinegun at people. Well, once it was against pseudo-nazi soldiers, but there was one episode where he did it against the police. There's also one other episode where he explodes a police truck, and the only survivor shown afterwards is Zenigata... but then we go right afterwards back to him just knocking out cops, Jigen shooting out their guns, Goemon cutting their clothing, etc. It's kind of odd, since, especially compared to something like Gintama, the general atmosphere of what's supposed to be a "serious" story generally isn't very different from a lighter one.

Overall though, this Lupin is clearly more heroic than in the first show, and although in some episodes he steals from innocent people, or even empties banks to the point of leaving no money at all in their safes, he never had a moment like the one in the first show where he actually attempts to make someone work for him at gun point. His "evil" is always strictly limited to stealing, if it's even there at all.

In spite of some slower episodes that couldn't keep my attention, I've been enjoying this. Also, like expected from a long episodic show, there are many stories very out there, like cyborgs, vampires (
It was meant to be serious, I guess, but I was laughing hard at the Jesus' vampire twin sister story
), zombies and not-zombies. In fact, regarding those last ones, I guess it's a product of the time. There's a certain story where through scientific means a villain manages to reanimate corpses into zombie-like beings, and yet they're never called "Zombies", but rather monsters or even ghosts. I guess Zombies were still only associated with the supernatural at the time?

Backgrounds and mechanical designs are significantly better than in the original show, however, during some of the goofiest moments of the series, we basically get Scooby-Doo chase scenes. With characters running in a single plane or just appearing and reappearing randomly from different locations of the background. There were some stretches of episodes where it seemed like they'd forget the "worldwide locations" theme, but so far they always managed to return to it, avoiding the generic locations of the first anime.

Lupin III - Secret of Mamo
And... there's this movie. I was wondering how a movie would be able to top the over the top stuff already seen in the series, but I quickly saw how. Starting from a standard heist, we end up with the American army involved and also a villain who claims to control the world. The last segment of the movie seemed like it was stretched too thin, I was left wondering how there was still half an hour left in the movie, but otherwise It had a nice balance between Lupin's usual antics and attempting to be bigger than a tv episode.

It's kind of odd how the commanders of the American army are portrayed as just as arrogant as the villain, but yet they aren't treated as enemies and receive no comeuppance for their confidence.

I also really liked the color changes done to Lupin's outfit, and wish they had used it in the show.
