The show continues to be great. The music is really a highlight for me and takes me back to those days when I watched
Macross so of course nothing but good vibes are in the air while I watch this. From the OP which fills me with excitement to the ED which is bittersweet and emotional, reminding me of the impeding end to all of the music in between, its all great.
The animation is also a highlight in this series, very painterly and beautiful. A lot of it is static, like many old series, but to be fair it’s pretty much a staple of the late
Osamu Dezaki (the director) and if you’ve seen
Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow’s Joe) and such, you’ll know what I mean. It’s generally known as the pastel freeze frame but
Osamu dubs it postcard memories and I’m a fan of it in these types of shows as it really drives home the childlike nature of them and the adventures that awaits, almost fairy-tale like in its presentation. It’s a cost cutting measure no doubt but in the end it works well here and is incorporated wonderfully and blends in with the painterly visuals.
Osamu Dezaki is actually a really fascinating director that brings along many of his signature techniques across his whole portfolio, almost like a stamp making sure the viewer knows that this is undoubtedly his work. His series from a visual standpoint are unmistakably his and striking, making subtle use of dutch angles in order to disorientate the viewer, a use of low key lighting, with deep shadows and high contrast in order to create a sense of isolation and loneliness and transitioning from detailed paintings to normal animation and vice versa. One technique in particular was the use of negative colors which was incorporated in a flashback and came across as very really striking.
I’m really enjoying the story so far. It’s very simple and easy to follow but fun all the same. Things seem to be getting into motion and the introductions are all done and dusted so I think things will get more interesting from now onwards. I really look forward to watching more and seeing how it goes on.
