Super Nintendo Switch was once considered as a name for the Switch 2, Nintendo confirms

“There were a lot of ideas for the name, and we really struggled to find the right one. We even considered ideas like “Super Nintendo Switch.” However, Super NES, which came out after the NES, couldn’t play NES games. Since Switch 2 can play Switch games, it didn’t feel right to use the same naming convention as Super NES. Switch 2 is a new system with improved performance, but we’d like players who get their hands on it not to focus on the specs, but rather to think of it as the latest system developed by Nintendo.” So, in the hope that it becomes the new standard for Nintendo Switch, we named it Nintendo Switch 2,” said Kawamoto.”

Always thought it was dumb when people came up with 'Super Nintendo Switch'. Kinda scary that Nintendo considered it at some point.
Honestly? After the Direct and additional info, I'd kinda say that the console name was the only thing they got totally right, lol.

Super Nintendo Switch would've be so cool. Then at some point release a limited edition model themed SNES. But let's be honest, nothing super about the Switch 2 at all.

I’m more of a fan of Switch 2, but Super Switch would have still been good.

Reverse groomer.
The legacy of the terrible Wii U name and wanting to leave no margin for error.
Wii U was a confusing and hard to understand name with bad branding compounding the error

Super Nintendo is literally one of the best names for a console. Simple, with pizzazz.

If they named is Super Switch I guarantee half of GAF would have been shouting "It's not worthy of the Super title!" at the top of their lungs.

Beyond the initial novelty it would only serve to cause confusion. It's not very creative, but there isn't a person out there that is confused by the PlayStation numbering. You know what probably still even trips GAF members up on occasion? Xbox's naming.

When they were naming it, they only had to go one back from the current product on the market to remember how much of a risk it is.

An iterative name for an iterative console.

People saying it's amazing have no idea about marketing. What about the sequel to the Super Switch? More Super Switch?

Ridiculous.
Switch 64. duh

Ridiculous.

The problem with experts in marketing is that they all show a general lack of creativity. Idk, perhaps a... new name for the successor. Surely someone could dream that up.

I've got an idea. How about a Super Maio Land reboot and it's a big open land game.

While I'd love the hit of nostalgia, calling it Switch 2 was 100% the right call
Pretty much this. I was on board with Super Nintendo Switch since the Switch Pro days but thinking about the average person, Switch 2 would cause a lot less confusion. Hell, Super Nintendo Entertainment System actually caused confusion among parents back in the day.

I don't know. I feel like 90% of the SWitch users weren't around for the SNES. And those who were don't associate it with "can't play NES games."

I think they probably might think it's a Switch Pro though and not a Switch 2? And you'd have to explain to everyone it's a sequel not a rerelease in 4k.

I get why they ultimately decided not to, but as a nostalgic old man, I wish they had.

I also wish they had gone with the SNES color scheme, if only for the buttons. I don't buy special editions, so I'm mildly sad that I will be stuck with the boring black default design for the next eight years.

Super Nintendo Switch is mostly for people old enough to have nostalgia feels for the Super Nintendo. Switch 2 has broader appeal.

The problem is people would just call it the Super Switch. Then it would be abbreviated as SS, and then they would invite a bunch of Nazi memes with Mario dressed up as an SS officer and Kirby in a gas chamber. That shit would be hilarious to watch, but a disaster for their brand

I'm not buying one and I would love it if they could lean into the SNES heritage. But they just can't get away with it.

Super Nintendo Switch would be dumb as fuck come on.

Kids wouldn't get the NES >> SNES reference...and not even their parents.

It would turn into a Wii > Wii U kind of situation.

Just keep it simple...just add the next numbers and you're set.

Hard disagree.

You don’t need a history lesson on NES-to-SNES to understand what “Super” implies. It’s kind of the most straightforward power-up prefix in pop culture.

Saiyan to Super Saiyan...
Man is less than Superman...
There's Head then there's Super Head...

“Super” = upgrade. Not exactly deep lore shit.

As for the Wii U...its whole problem was that people didn’t understand it. The name and branding left a lot of folks confused about whether it was a new console or just an add-on for the Wii. So yeah, clarity in naming really does matter...

The reasoning Kawamoto gave is ridiculous. Backwards compatibility wasn't a thing until well after the SNES, technology was moving too quickly and the industry had not matured. Super is a simple modifier that people can easily understand. You literally have an entire industry with dumbass names like "Xbox 360", or whatever bullshit scheme they are using for GPUs and CPUs, even Apple products have shit naming schemes that people somehow understand.

But no, "Super" would break everyone's smooth brains.

While I’ve gotten used to ‘2’ by now, I still much prefer ‘Super’. Would’ve been a great callback to their legacy as well.

Personally I'd prefer Super Nintendo Switch I see why they went with Switch 2. They probably wanted to avoid a Wii U situation and calling Switch 2 easily solves that problem.
