He really just wants to make movies so let him

TLOU2 is a linear movie movie with forced gameplay to unlock the next story cutscene.

Nothing in TLOU uses features that are specific to games media (interactivity, interaction, choice, personal experience..)

Imo he nailed Uncharted 4 story and ending but TLOU2 story is very bad.
Story was fine. Ending was fine. Pacing was AWFUL. Replay ability non existent. People replayed earlier uncharted games multiple times (sometimes in a row). Drake's brother was a very repulsive character. Nadine the super woman was weird because earlier games showed drake a capable fighter. Not a wimp.

Amy is one of my design heroes, and this is a great conversation.

She's one person I'd dearly love to have a discussion with on game design because even though I don't necessarily agree with every opinion she holds, I'm sure she'd have robust reasoning behind those opinions.

He can stay there and suck corporate cock. Time for him to satisfy his fetishes without any blocks. He has been drooling over Hollywood corporate cock for years now. The rest of Naughty Dogs can finally make games.

Disagree entirely. The gameplay in TLOU 2 was superb. But how does the game not have "interaction" or "interactivity"? It is a game. Of course it does.

Why are half of all game directors only doing games until they get a chance to work in hollywood? is nobody the real deal anymore?

TV directing is not like film directing. It’s probably a courtesy and doesn’t mean he’s jumping ship to Hollywood.

Just listen to the TGMN episode with Amy. Very insightful. You listen to it and in the end you get an epiphany of sorts.

What epiphany was that? Ironically enough she's the one who's more interested in reaching the people who aren't interested in videogames. Instead of trying to evolve the medium for the new generations of people who grew up playing videogames, she's more focused on old people like her who don't respect videogames the same way they do Love Island. Joke.

It's like watching There Will be Blood and arguing that really, the movie should've tried to be more accessible to people who aren't so interested in movies that make them think.

Just another director from a generation that felt unrecognized for working on videogames and therefore spent their career wishing they could turn games into something they are not just so they could get recognition from Hollywood. Just make a great game, with a great story and characters. All that talk about making a game with no challenge, no fail state, listen, if it's interactive and I have to make choices then by default I can do something wrong, or something with negative consequences. Trying to avoid that is just stupid.

"Oh I don't finish games anymore", you're 57 years old, big deal. Steven Spielberg says he can no longer watch movies, oh noes, films are dead. God.

I expect the petition mob will be logging into change.org in full force soon.

Why? He already ruined the game none of us that dislike him are going to watch it. Just solidifies it’ll be shit actually it might be good since it’s what he excels at but I guarantee some woke story line shit in a post nuclear world.

Some number 1 society issues relevance there.

Good for him. He will be great.

But I worry what this means for Naughty Dog if he is the creative lead on their next game. HBO will clearly take priority and if hes out for months prepping then shooting an episode then who is going to be running the show over at ND?

Let new blood run the studio for a while. Neil needs to take a break and shift to tv shows.

Actually want this to happen. maybe it's a way for Sony to soft move him out of ND

Exactly. Not sure why this is a surprise. Typically, TV shows have multiple directors across the seasons. So Druckmann is probably getting to direct one or two. Often times, actors in the show get to direct episodes. I think people are mistaking this for Druckmann becoming the show runner and overreacting.

This is why Naughty Dog is working on remakes instead of a real next gen game
The U4+UTLL remasters are being done by Iron Galaxy, the TLOU1 remake was being made by the 2nd Sony San Diego studio, that were people from Sony's Visual Arts Service Group (the ones who make the cutscenes of the Sony games and also work as art/animation support team).

That San Diego team pitched it because some of them wanted to make their own project instead of working as a support team, pitched first to make CG movies/tv series of Sony IPs, Sony declined them and asked them to focus on gaming. Then they thought about making their own game, and in order to reuse material they did for the tv pitch they thought about an Uncharted 1 remake because they thought it would be easier for them as their first game and would be easier to get greenlighted by Sony. Then they realized they needed to update the gameplay and many other things, so thought about a simpler remake, some other game that wasn't that outdated: TLOU1, one that also they could bundle with TLOU2 PS5, got greenlighted and they started to make it. ND only provided them material and overviewed the usage of their IP.

Time later Hermen Hulst joined his current position, saw this remake, didn't like it and didn't like they spent a huge amount of budget and resources on it, asked them to switch their roles to complete the last stages of development of the remake: ND as lead team and San Diego VASG team going back to their original support role.

So only a tiny portion of ND is working on the remake. After TLOU2 the other ones have been mostly with the TLOU2 MP game and at least during some time with an Uncharted spn-off with help from Bend, until Bend got their next new IP greenlighted. They also made some TLOU3 preproduction (at least they have the story, Druckmann wrote it) just in case somewhere in the future they decide to do it. And who knows if they also started to work on a new IP, since they said they would like to work on new IP and to continue working with their existing IPs like Uncharted or TLOU.

Neil has been wasting his time doing the TV series instead of prototyping their next big game IP
He's co-president of Naughty Dog, Creative Director and Writer, his job isn't to prototype stuff. They have been busy with TLOU2, the TLOU2 MP game and seems that also an Uncharted spin-off (which may be cancelled). He wrote the main story of TLOU3 to have it ready if in the future they decide to develop it, so pretty likely he also wrote ideas for different new IPs, that later the rest of the team and Sony would have to greenlight.

I hope he gets Brie Larson to play Abby just to piss people off.
Jason Momoa would be a better fit.

Man, what is wrong with people - he makes one controversial game and makes two amazing ones (UC4 and LoU) and was involved in many other amazing games and they lose their minds thinking everything is woke.

Watch it be amazing and win all the awards and have a great story and these stubborn people will still be like wahhh Neil is so woke bro can't believe he put a gay person in the show they don't exist irl.

Zero interest. Don't want to be a hater but I'm not a fan of grief porn.

This is just gonna be The Walking Dead with melodrama on overload.

Do you mean how literally every linear game is designed?

Cutscene > Linear Path > Fighting Section > Linear Path > Cutscene

The Uncharted series and Gears of War series have the exact same formula. Only major difference is that in Gears of War is there are boss battles at the end of levels.

Hopefully they offer him a permanent position. Or Sony could make him something like "Chairman of IP adaptations" and have him oversee and direct multiple TV/Movie projects.
And ND can go back to making games without awful pacing for the sake of story.

There are 2 directors already for TLOU HBO show, I think he's there more to provide information/guide/LEARN but not necessarily full on direct. I highly doubt he's directing directing, plus it's something new for him as well. There are differences between movies, shows, and video games obviously. This is probably a good learning experience for him if he wants to get into that industry.

The direction and acting in TLOU2 is of the same quality of a A* movie/show.
So as long as he has the same quality of talent and complete creative control, im optimistic.

Amy Hennig had nothing to do with TLOU1 and Bruce Straley was actually the gameplay director and had little to nothing to do with the story. Even many of the harshest critics will admit that the gameplay in TLOU2 was a huge improvement so like it or not ND was the guy responsible for the first game.

Amy hennig wanted uncharted 4 to be like 80% non violent.

Which I actually like the idea of, I like the non violent parts in UC4 and RDR2.

That might not be the worst idea.

He had nothing to do with The lost legacy and it was the best paced ND game since Uncharted 2.

TBH, I was quite surprised by just how good the characterization in LL really was. They even made me like Sam and Nadine. Two characters I really disliked in U4.

Yeah Lost Legacy was my favorite ND game from last gen and it was mainly due to the better pacing. Felt more like the Ps3 era of Naughty Dog when it was more about fun characters and the story being used to give context to cool gameplay moments instead of the Druckmann era where story rules everything.

You really think games critics are any different? How do you think TLoU2 would have scored if it had the wrong type of ideological messaging?

You'll never convince me that you can slap together Netflix TV show cutscenes onto a game with standard stealth gameplay, turn the graphics to 11, and be anything more than meh.
