The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

PS Direct here in Portugal has them since yesterday without selling out. I bought it from a different retailer last week here no problem as well.

Wtf... it was 99 two hours ago.

Douches took down the listing and added an £10 extra.

Folks in the UK should just subscribe to hotstock alerts, other retailers are dropping reguarly and are not being scummy like currys.

Currys is just trying to make some money.
Retail has gone to shit because of internets.

It was available on PS Direct Italy this morning for a couple of minutes, went to buy it and i got presented with the "currently not available" as i was checking out, FML...

This has gotten ridiculous at this point

So, received an email from a big retailer over here this morning (Euronics) about the drive being in stock and i actually managed to order the damned thing and it's already ready for pickup.

Here's the thing though: I'm having second thoughts since the only games I have on disc are CP2077 (finished the main game, haven't started the DLC yet), Armored core 6 and Nier Replicant.
Grabbed CP2077 digitally for 25€ a few days ago where it was on sale and AC6 is also on sale now, don't really care about Nier tbh.
Basically, 41€ + 25 = 66€ to get the games digitally compared to 120€ that the drive costs...

Basically, I don't know if I really need this but I'd hate for the drive to go to a scalper though 🤔

You could probably find a member here you could sell to for retail price.

I was able to get one within a week or two of trying.
Just keep checking Target, Best Buy, PS Direct and Amazon.
Usually early morning.
I was able to order one on Amazon (which I cancelled because it said Feb 2025) and was successful at Best Buy.
If you don't mind paying the Gamestop tax, they usually have it in stock for "Pro" members.

In the long run, it's going to be cheaper. You can get a ton of old cheap games on discs. I buy mostly digitally, but physical games go down in price faster and you can resell them (and buy used).
Maybe you just don't need it now, but you'll regret not having one.

If you don't use it just sell it

Well, managed to grab one yesterday, scalpers can suck my dick, 300-400€ for a disc drive of all things ? LMAO, get bent you worms...

Now, a couple of things :
- This thing gets LOUD the first 30 seconds to 1 minute+ after starting an installation, I'm talking about a loud buzzing which I'm pretty sure my OG PS5 didn't have.
Reddit/YouTube etc is filled with said problem and apparently, it's also dependent on the game inserted which is the darnest thing and yet, I can corroborate that since the Armored core 6 disc was pretty much quiet during installation but as soon as I put the Silent hill 2 remake disc inside the drive...fuck man, it sounded like a jet engine with an added plastic buzzing on top.
Apparently this is a detachable drive thing introduced with the Ps5 slim obviously and it's got to do with the plates mainly (?).
Some said that putting some rubber feet/a mousepad under the the PS5 helps, haven't tried it yet so...

- Installation times are...long ? Don't remember games taking 20-30 minutes to install, then again, I've been mostly digital this Gen so I might be misremembering things.

I just got mine yesterday and... everything you said here was my exact thoughts.

Friend, the noise being different depending on the disc that's inserted is the weirdest fuxking thing ever - and I'm not talking about PS5 Vs PS4 discs either (where there was a sound difference between them even on the original PS5), I'm talking about PS5 discs here...

Tried with a PS4 game some minutes ago and...the sound is even louder ffs, the buzzing is atrocious !

It's GOTTA be the plates since when i apply pressure on them the buzzing goes away (or at least, diminishes).

Tried to place a mouse pad under the PS5 and, get this, depending on where you place it, the sound changes, if the mousepad covers all of the surface of the PS5's belly, the sound gets actually WORSE, basically, you only have to have the 2 small feet touching on the mousepad as to drown the sound a little bit.

Fuxking hell man, I just can't anymore , I'm tired of doing the troubleshooting for these mega corps

Remove ve the disc drive with a disc inside. Turn the release screw until the disc is about a quarter out and remove the disc. If that hasn't worked repeat and turn a bit further each time until it's less noisy.

Got finally my drive after three months. I only had to order from five different retailers. In order to get the drive I had to order by phone(Media Markt). At least a sensible anti-scalper measure.

F*** this shit.🖕 😡🖕
Happy for you, man! Just in time for the holidays! My brother is still looking for a disc drive (he missed one that dropped a few days ago by just a few minutes, lol).

He's pretty upset about that since he's on holiday until the second week of January, and he'd like to play some of the disc based games I have in my collection (SM2, TLOU2 Remastered, etc.).

It's normal, especially with chonky games that are large in size. I've actually just finished installing FFXVI, and it took 50 minutes to copy the game from the disc since it's around 90 GB in size.

I already saw that fix on YT Frank but thanks anyway!

Here's the thing though : we shouldn't resort to these kind of fixes in the year of our Lord 2024, it's just a bad look and goes to show that the company doesn't give 2 shits when it comes to proper quality control.

Oh well, thanks anyway brother, cheers!

But did you try it?
It's a safety measure built in to remove a disc in case of failure.
But it works for this case. The original PS5 had this same issue and is fixed this way as well.

I bought a bar silicone mat on Amazon and it seems to help a bit. When I installed Miles Morales, there was a very loud rattling sound. My guess what that the vibrations on the wood it sits on is part of the problem.

I am checking the local PS Direct page daily and never saw it in stock once.
Meanwhile, our biggest Electronics Store, Media Markt, raised the price to 139€ with no stock either.

In case anyone's interested, I got a horizontal skates stand and the console is now almost whisper quiet even when installing games.

It's the fucking el-cheapo small plastic feet solution that Sony chose that's making the drive go BrrrrRRRR since they're not big enough (nor padded) resulting in vibration transfer throughout the furniture area.

I've tried everything and again, the Only thing that helped was the horizontal skates stand .

Here the drive is still over 200usd, and i mean actual big online stores that sell electronics:
Those are big nationwide stores with ads on tv and they still mark up price to double of what it should be by themselfs, they fricken flip those disc drives like there is no tomorrow.
On a positive side now at least ppl actually can find those disc drives in stores, still at crazy inflated price, so who knows, give it few more months and maybe big stores will stop with crazy 2x+ price markup.

Lol, went through the comments. People are reporting the store to Consumer Protection Agency for price gauging.

All this shows is that there's huge interest in physical media in a way the corporations don't want to acknowledge.

I fully believe that it is deliberately overpriced and scarce in stock to get people to embrace (i.e. lock themselves into) Sony's digital ecosystem.
100%
I bet Sony has very precise figures on how much money they "lose" on average from disc drive console owners compared to digital only owners and I wouldn't be surprised if you as a disc drive buyer offset this "loss" with the purchase price.

And also why these drives are in low supply.
