The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

Damage control for what? That Sony had no problem making ~40 milion drives for PS5 and slim and now they can't manufacture them anymore?

All I see are fools defending every anti consumer move from Sony. Almost like apple fanboys...
You could easily find these discs not that long ago. Scalpers just took advantage of the situation before the Pro release and that was obvious. They are clearly ramping up production on them if they will be available in a week or so. Yes it was 3 weeks after the PS5 Pro released but you can't always just have sold-out products in stores by clapping your hands.

This isn't a Sony problem, it happens with literally every brand and scalpers are an industry wide problem that the internet brought us.

You can find these discs all over eBay and other marketplaces. Clearly the problem wasn't with Sony manufacturing no units. There isn't some massive conspiracy at Sony for people to stop buying physical games. Even if physical games are like 30% that's still a lot and i'm sure they make money from each disc drive unit sold.

Oh please tell me how is that?

Specially considering the majority of PS5 game sales are digital lmao.
I can buy keys from dozens of stores, both legitimate and sketchy. I can buy games from different platforms such as Steam, GoG, EGS, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net and Windows Store.

There are constant sales and deals on these games due to having many options and competitions. Developers can often generate keys for free depending on the platform and sell on 3rd party shops.

This is night and day as compared to PlayStation store.

PS store is expensive compared to retailed disc-versions.

Right now on black friday I can pick up latest God of War for less than 30 USD on discount on disc or pay 50 USD on black friday sale on PS Store…

The disc needs to be manufactured and shipped before being sold and is still way cheaper… Sony is scalping off of lazy idiots who are too fat to get out of their couch to change discs.

Yep, Sony could have easily had Pro Disk sku if they wanted their customers not to have these issues.

Instead they only have a Digital SKU and under shipped disk drives. And hey, why not as clearly seen in this thread. Between people jumping in to all digital train and Corpo defenders Sony doesn’t have much to lose.

Let's be honest. There's no BoM reason why this discless console should cost 1.75 times as much as the base model with such modest hardware upgrades. Factoring in R&D, it's still a ridiculous price. Even pricing a disc version at $700 would've seemed excessive. They made a move based on greed, they expected that there were enough people who would literally buy anything with a PS logo on it at any price, and it appears to be blowing up in their faces.

Sony really made me spend 800€ on a console and another 120€ on a disc drive like this...
POV when you have a perfectly functional PS5 with optical drive and stand included, but Sony makes you replace it with a digital-only “pro” console with no stand.

Is it blowing up though? It seems that Sony is actually successfully converting its highest spending customers to a digital platform which brings the highest profits.

Lack of the drives is a boon to them basically since it forces people toward digital. So higher profit on the Pro is then coupled with higher profit from digital sales.

Everyone wins except for the customers. :(

They launch PS6 digital only, and I'm out.

PC all the way if that happens (owner of all PS systems through the years)
The writing is on the wall imo. I'll be shocked if they offer a disc drive for PS6. The fact that they didn't have a proper supply of drives for the Pro launch sends the (not so subtle message) to its physical userbase that this is the last dance. :(

My PRO is sitting idle so I have to play on PS5 Peasant because of this fuckup.
I have downloaded Nikoderiko and Pennys Big Breakaway because of this bullshit.

Retailer promised me that they get the drive sometime early december.

But you shouldn't rely on Sony's delivery dates anyway. They supposedly wanted to deliver the drive at the beginning of november and I'm still waiting.

You can find mountains of them out in the wild at local stores and online. You can buy one of several PS5 Pros on ebay right now for substantially less than MSRP (excluding 30th Anniversary and bundles, of course). Demand just isn't there. I'll be shocked if it doesn't get a price cut next year.

Demand is inline with their forecasts on a mid-gen product. As it was last gen. It's actually selling more than the 4Pro and 1X did.

This is a scalpers folly.

As I said before, it is possible that they are relying on a portion of hardcore PlayStation fans who will buy literally anything they put out to foot the bill for a niche and expensive product, but I don't see it doing PS4 Pro numbers. Not without a substantial price cut. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

It seems priced to allow for cuts.

It’s going to be interesting to see if they will have a model with the drive for say $650 mid next year.

There are a ton of PS4 and PS5 discs out there. It's possible that PS6 games may become digital only, and the PS6 may not launch with a built in optical drive option. But unless Sony wants to leave behind a ton of gamers, they'll likely go the route of the PS5 Pro and sell the drive as an add-on for those who want it.

Sadly though, we are in the twilight of physical media, especially for games. We're at least three years out from PS6, likely four. I would not be at all shocked if there are no physical PS6 games, or that they perhaps become a very niche thing only available through sites like LRG.

If you want physical games on PlayStation, vote with your wallet. Buy the SKUs that come with the drive or purchase the drive as an add-on. Buy every game you want that gets a physical release on disc over digital. Keeping these numbers up is the only way to convince a large corporation not to exit a segment of the market.

They won’t be left behind. They will catch up on their own by switching to digital

Poor sony screwed by evil scalpers. Like maybe they could have predicted increased demand before launching new DISKLESS consoles aimed for hardcore gamers that like buying discs?
Scalpers buys shitload of disk drives = lol Sony is retard

Scalpers buys shitload of ps5 consoles at launch = lol it's not selling well it's just scalpers buying them

You guys are batshit crazy, get a clue

I don't really anticipate seeing them. Again, the PS5 Pro is an enthusiast product. It's for videophiles, professional gamers/streamers, and the most hardcore of PlayStation fans. PS5 sales in general have not slowed. The OG/Slim models are the mainstream product, and they're still selling incredibly well. The PS5 Pro is an elite product that will continue to command a high price. If they lower the price of the PS5 Pro, it will devalue the OG/Slim PS5. And Sony won't be in any hurry whatsoever to cut price on the primary model unless the sales become sluggish.

The PS4 Pro was never a huge part of Sony's strategy last done. It had a much lower priced and the overwhelming majority of PS4 owners/new buyers opted either not to upgrade, or if coming into the PS4 to save $100 and get the PS4 Slim instead. Armed with this data, there is no reality in which Sony launched the PS5 Pro thinking it was going to equal or outperform the PS4 Pro. It will be lucky to do even half the sales the PS4 Pro did. I suspect it'll be even less than that.

The entire reason that the PS5 Pro exists is to occupy the highest tier in the market. Xbox is no longer competing on this front, there is no equivalent of the Xbox One X coming for the series. So PlayStation has captured the high end of the market by default and is now servicing it. Another reason why they didn't include a disc drive. They don't have to. If you're a high end PlayStation gamer, you don't have any other option if you want the best console performance--otherwise you'd have become a PC gamer at some point.

So no, I don't see the price of the PS5 Pro suddenly dropping even if the sales numbers tell the story that it's a flop. When you're at the head of the class, you don't suddenly wave a white flag, put on a dunce cap, and go sit in the corner to think about what you've done. Unless/until the OG/Slim PS5 stops flying off shelves, there's no reason for Sony to change strategy and they might as well milk the elite end of the market. Some people want these things and will pay for them. Let them. For everyone else, there's the plain PS5.

So, I managed to snatch one at Argos and I should get it on Monday. I will keep the pre-orders I have with Shopto and Very. I'm not sure when they plan to ship (Very said it was by the 27th of this month but who knows) but I'll happily sell it to one of UK gaffers in this chat for retail price if it actually happens.

So it looks like they are "re-releasing" it in Japan:

bVAf8TK.jpeg

¥30,000 is real fucking obnoxious, afaik it's still $80 US? That would be around ¥12,300 at today's exchange rate, PlayStation getting silly in their home market, economic factors be damned. On the plus side my Pro has that highly prized "Made in Japan" seal of quality, if you know you know.

Edit: didn't realize it's a third party seller, let's wait and see what the actual price is once Sony has it back in stock 🤷🏻‍♂️

More expensive than the Nintendo Switch OLED

Them some scalper prices bro

Still no stock here in Australia. Have an order in with JB in case they get some but still waiting unfortunately. Just a balls up by Sony yet again.

I mean you would rather wait an indefinite timeframe for it? I mean it sucks, but that's the way it is.

These were available before the announcement of the Pro. No one cared. Now look.

While it's sad in a sense, I'm glad that I've sold off my physical collection besides retro stuff and went all digital this gen. Hope you lads can get a drive.

Ordered one from GameStop two weeks ago and arrived within like 2 days no big deal for me. Sucks if a lot of people are having issues from what I have heard or been seeing.

Send me a link to this rather than a screenshot.

Nevermind; it was a red flag that you took a screenshot instead of linking it and the reason was obvious.

This isn't from Sony or Amazon. It's a 3rd party reseller...

418 Euros
Sold and shipped by Amazon themselves, no 3rd party scalpers, now what ?

Who the fuck puts prices like that ?
At that point, I might as well get me a PS5 slim with a drive but I guess, it's my fault as consumer that I didn't buy a drive 2+ months before the Pro released according to some people in here...

Say what now? I've never seen a 3rd party sellers offer pre-orders so I assumed this is the new price but you're right, I double-checked and it's not Amazon. However, do you have evidence to the contrary that this isn't the new price? Whether Amazon, Rakuten or Mercari sellers have it at *minimum* 30K.

And I don't know what screenshots have to do with anything, tread carefully with your implications, homie don't play that.
