The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

Playstation consoles without discs have no purpose, might as well go full PC in that case.

This is pretty wild. There are PS5 pros just sitting on the shelf at my local Walmart, but there isn't a disc drive for sale at retail price within a hundred miles of here. I was literally going to buy a Pro today but I'm not bothering until I get a disc drive first.
Same here. I want to buy one, but there are no drives for sale so it does not make sense for me to pick one up. Every store is fully stocked with consoles though.

This again.

I went all digital in the early 2010s. The only physical game I have is Dragon Age: Inquisition for the PS4. The reason I bought a physical disc is because DA:I is banned in India and I couldn't buy it digitally on Steam or PSN. I did not know that the Indian government was actually protecting me from generic thrash, I fully regret the 6$ I spent on that disc.

I've got Rise of the Ronin, Cyberpunk, Armored Core 6, FF7rebirth all on disc that i can't play because Sony morons cannot manage their supply chain or whatever, and im that close to buy a one way ticket to hermen hulst office in Amsterdam red light district (or wherever this whore of a man works from) to tell him how i feel about his managing of the company.

A japanese CEO would have committed seppuku already, but of course we're stuck with an honorless westerner.

I've had this thing sitting around for 2 weeks now. Still no drive. I have reserved it at 3 stores. Ps5 pro mountains are everywhere. You might think that Sony might have produced a few drives as well, but nope. Maybe you could have learned from the broken ps5 launch, but no, that's asking too much.

Been out of stock since September in Japan. Luckily I have a massive digital library so I can wait though there are new releases like DQ3 remake that I'd prefer to get on disc, itching to play it.

I scored one drive yesterday, at dutch online retailer bol.com. when they where sold out they costed 119e. The few new drives they had in stock where priced 149e. This is a huge retail site that scalped me 30 euros. But still better than the idiots asking 500e on the dutch marketplace. Still a huge miscalculation from Sony.. no drive on their site here in .nl for the last 8 weeks. im starting to think they are doing this to force people going digital..

anyways. just stuck my GT7 disc in. got a whole tower of blurays waiting to be installed again ;p

All this because of the Pro? Seems Sony was able to anticipate the demand for Pro but not the drives. Either way, Pro is driving this shortage which tells me it is doing pretty dang well.

This seems a bit disingenuous. You're comparing apples to oranges. The PS5 launch was not "broken." Sony produced a ton of units for it. However, demand was absurdly high, and it would sell out instantly partly due to demand, partly due to scalpers buying them all up. PS5 launched during peak Covid, so this was not just a "make more units Sony" issue. Chips and parts were in extremely high demand across the tech spectrum, not just for gaming devices. Demand was at an all-time high while supply was at an all-time low. It took a lot of time for this situation to correct itself, but once it did, PS5s became easier and easier to get until you could just walk into any store or log onto any site and buy one as you can today.

The current situation with the add-on PS5 disc drive is a completely different story. There isn't a shortage on the parts. Sony can manufacture them. The issue here is that Sony isn't used to having to. The demand has never been high. Because until the PS5 Pro launched two weeks ago, there was no real demand for the drive. If you wanted your PS5 to support discs, you just bought the disc version. The add-on literally only existed for people who bought the PS5 Slim All Digital edition and then later regretted not getting the disc drive and chose to get that feature. It was an extremely niche product.

The PS5 Pro launching without a SKU featuring a disc drive has made demand for the drive astronomical. Sony seems to have thought demand for physical would be less in 2024 vs. 2020. Moreover, it's in their best interests for gamers to opt for digital over physical as those games can't be resold in much of the world and they make more money off the digital games. So we're now in a situation where Sony likely far underestimated demand for the drive with PS5 Pro on one hand, while on the other they aren't feeling any great urgency to resolve the situation. These factors combined will make the situation continue for some time.

PS5 disc drives are readily available on eBay. I see them go for as little as $120 and as much as $200+. Unless you want to be very patient for the shortage to pass or keep trying your luck at stores and on websites hoping to catch a restock, you can get one without much trouble, but you will pay scalper prices. It may very well be worth measuring how much you're losing out. Stores do a ton of Black Friday deals on physical games. If you can snap up some titles you've been long wanting for a great price, it may be worth getting gouged on the disc drive. Otherwise, keep waiting or keep trying your luck. Or screw it and be digital only.

Its doing well in the US, for now, everywhere else its priced terribly and discdrives are nowhere to be found except from scalpers, hell here in eu/poland smaller stoles scalping the discdrives themselfs and selling online for over 250$ a piece, thats how ez it is for scalpers to fuck us up when they need to scalp not 700usd/800euro console but 80$ discdrive.
To give u comparision if i wanna buy ps5pr0 now, with discdrive from scalper(coz no1 else is selling, all major stores got it sold out with no info on avaiability) i gotta spend close to 1200usd, suddenly ps5pr0 doesnt sound like good deal anymore.
And lets not mention salaries here are roughly 4-5x lower vs the US, but that affects all electronics, including my upcoming new pc rig(still on the verge when to buy it but with ps5pr0 being big bust coz of disc drive scalpers its pushing me towards spending that cash and more on pc instead, simply ;)

here proof
1189pln so 285usd :messenger_ok:

Oh please tell me how is that?

Specially considering the majority of PS5 game sales are digital lmao.

There is only 1 digital store for playstation, aka 0 competition, on pc u got many that compete with eachother which results in lower prices, simple as that.

Yep.

Plus actual ownership of digital games is a thing on PC, you can keep offline installers from GoG forever.

Steam on the other hand compared to PS Store has actual refund options, you can return games you don't like AFTER playing them (you have to know you don't like the game before downloading it on PS, lol).

Sony has monopoly and they are greedy motherfuckers in the last few years.

Physical is no. 1 but no. 2 is PC DD, consoles are far below on the list...

Just got notified by a Portuguese retailer that they have this available for delivery in 12 days tops. Europe is getting units as we speak or during the next 2 weeks.

Just a heads up. If Portugal wirh 10M people is getting them, must mean every country in europe is as well lmao

edit: Sony really made me spend 800€ on a console and another 120€ on a disc drive like this...

I managed to snag myself a stand-alone disc drive. Planning to trade in my launch disc PS5 on Monday for a Pro and have the ultimate PS5.

The quest for the ULTIMATE Playstation is finally over. Black plates, disc drive, and Pro power.

(Seriously, it feels a little like we got Samus'd are on this quest to get back all the stuff we lost at the start of the sequel)

Good stuff. Take advantage of those physical sales. How does it usually work? Port cities and countries get them quicker?

That's fair. Pricing/demand is going to vary from one region to another. I get that.

I would say "actual ownership" would mean you can resell the license, but beyond that, I agree 100%. This is why I only use physical on console unless with a subscription.

Still nobody mentioning why the "conglomerate" had the same stock issues with a charging dock at PS5 launch. That's just some damn cables wrapped in plastic to charge your controller. People don't invent a conspiracy for that one. Just that they sold out quick and they were manufacturing them slower than people were buying them up.
lol I remember that. I don't think the remote was easy to find either. Yea Sony needs to figure this out.

Yeah I don't get it. Readily available. Even just before the reveal the rumors were saying no drive. I don't give any sympathy.
In the USA you could easily have bought one up until a few days before the Pro came out.

Damage control for what? That Sony had no problem making ~40 milion drives for PS5 and slim and now they can't manufacture them anymore?

All I see are fools defending every anti consumer move from Sony. Almost like apple fanboys...
Wait until Apple bankrolls Sony and they buy Sega and Konami.... We're all getting tattoos
