The recent state of play made me realize something concerning about Sony

Arrogant Sony is back and full in effect. A Days gone remaster and a bullshit cgi trailer from Sony studios. They don’t need to rely on first party because they can have all third party showcase games now.

Also now with Microsoft throwing in the towel they are now the default console of choice which means the price of everyone on PlayStation is going up hardware, services and games.

It's not even any of that. GTA6 will carry them to gen end, as long as it's not delayed they don't need to do anything.

Explain how this is arrogance?

What scares me the most is all the kid games showed in the beginning half of the show (digimon, sonic racer gulf war edition, etc.)
It looked like a nintendo direct if without nintendo creativity and talent...

What is up with sony execs are they so stupid they don't know sonyfags are edgy teenagers, not portable console playing menchildren ?

There are a lot of ways of looking at this. I think they have a marketing/production pipeline problem.

If they waited to have a showcase and in the showcase they showed Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Intergalactic, Saros, MLB The Show 25, and maybe Marathon and/or Venom... with remasters of Day's Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn it would have been considered a goated showcase.

The drip feed surrounded by a lot of games no one cares about isn't helping them, but the games are coming. You're complaining about getting a CG trailer for a game that's scheduled to come out next year...

Sony just finished last year with GOTY and ongoing game of the year... Destiny Final Shape was well received.

This year they're delivering at a minimum Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei...

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
They're not relying on first party because they feel they don't need to, they're doing it because they have no other choice after axing most of their first party portfolio post-Concord.

They've canceled .. what .. 6 or so projects in the last few months? The big SP games take year(s) to make and all those who got theirs canceled are probably now in early planning stages of what's next.

I'm not sure if you know the meaning of that word. Otherwise, no idea why you would use it.

It wasn't that bad, 6/10. They shoulda combined the last 2 they had into 1 good 8/10 showcase.

Xbox laid up with 3 solid multiplatform games and got huge praise, Sony has more than that coming(or at least that much) but they don't know how to advertise effectively. Also people are overly harsh on Sony because they are the market leader. The beatdowns will continue until someone not Nintendo overtakes them.

They barely showcase there first party titles. This whole gen from a first party gen has been remasters other than a handful of Sony first person exclusives. From a first party perspective it has been weak in comparison to the previous generations. Didn’t they just also up the subscription services recently too?
You know it's February, right?

We know one of these is having a show soon (March I think?).

this is what destroyed XBOX back in 2010. They relied too much on 3rd party games and did not do enough first party games after that. That costed them two generations.
The difference though is Sony can survive this because Microsoft on Sony now.

But how is that a sign of arrogance?

They've been saying for years that their AAA titles take longer and longer to develop.

On top of that, people had been flaming them throughout the entirety of last-gen for announcing their games too early. Hence the 'Soony' jokes.

The "arrogant" Sony has released goty first material every year since 2020, when the generation started (it already won two TLOU2 and Astrobot) and in the last events it has presented an AAA in each one, Ghost of Yotei, Intergalactic and Saros, releasing this year DS2 and Yotei, it never ceases to surprise me the level of demand there is with Sony.

6 or so projects? Come on, sapple...

My bad, it's more than 6.

Cancelled:

10: God of War live service game from Bluepoint (dev since 2022, cancelled Jan 2025)

11: sci-fi live service game from Bend (dev since around 2020, cancelled Jan 2025, screenshots were leaked back in Dec 2024)

12: Twisted Metal live service game from Firesprite (previously worked on by Lucid Games, moved to Firesprite before being cancelled in Feb 2024)

13: The Last of Us multiplayer live service game from Naughty Dog (dev since 2020, cancelled Dec 2023)

14: Spider-man live service game from Insomniac (dev since 2019 according to leaks, cancelled sometime in 2022?)

15: unknown live service game from Deviation (dev since 2021, cancelled May 2023, studio shut down March 2024)

16: unknown sci-fi live service game from First Strike (this could've been Deviation's game since they were a support studio and the news of the cancellation happened the same day that news broke of Deviation laying off 80% of their staff in May 2023, but nothing confirmed from what I know)

17: Operation Payback from Bungie (dev since 2022(?), cancelled back in Aug 2024, thought to be Destiny 3)

Sony has no direction, no clear leadership. It’s like a headless chicken, chasing trends but stumbling and never reaching the finish line in time.

If only Shawn Layden wasn't pushed aside, it'd have been very different. The arrogance for me is their lack of communication and no personalities. Even Herman didn't show his face!

Only two were from the last few months. Over there you have shit that did not even get into production (TM and SM), and one that is not even from an internal studio. Lol with counting the First Strike thing.

Most of those are reported canceled in 2024. Don't focus on the semantics of 'few months' as meaning something only in January of February, these are all first party projects that could have been previewed by now.

Now most of these studios are conceptualizing their next project, the one's that still exist at least.

Sony completely fucked up their first party lineup thanks to that illbegotten GAAS push. They are course correcting now but with development times as they are this gen is pretty much fucked from a 1st party standpoint, no way to really save it.

Luckily for them Xbox managed to fuck themselves up even worse...or rather just continued with it....so that they are now officially out of the race and Sony realistically doesn`t even need their first party anymore when they are getting literally everything from everyone bar Nintendo.

Except that this is literally only the case of Bend and Bluepoint. It's certainly not with Insomniac, Naughty Dog or Firesprite.

You people talking about arrogant Sony to describe current Sony show you were not there in 2006 and deserve to be ignored.

You can (and should) dislike many things about modern Sony and the recent State of Play, but they are obviously having issues with their output and being mismanaged.

They specialized in the kind of games that take longer and longer to make and should have invested in smaller studios. They made a bet on live services and failed spectacularly at it. This isn't arrogance, just incompetence.

Well, yes, certainly not with Firesprite .. cause they don't exist anymore.

The team which worked on Factions is probably either preparing for their next project or has been absorbed into other ND projects.

Same for the team at Insomniac which was working on the MP Spidey game.

Shawn Layden started this shit LOL! He even admitted the PC push and other things were his idea during his tenure.

Them releasing the pro console at the price they did and in some games the base PS5 is running better is arrogance to me.

Firesprite is not Firewalk, dawg.

Insomniac most definitely doesn't have any teams, devs jump from project to project, which is why you see all of them working on all games. The GAAS project was conceptualized, started some kind of pre-production, they quickly stopped at it and all those devs moved on to work on SM2 and Wolverine.
IDK for ND, but the organization as a whole has been working on a big SP project all this time , anyway.

They're not going to drop their heavy hitters in a February SOP. That'll be reserved for a future event in the Summer.

There have been a fair few remasters this generation, but it's clearly not just remasters. The reason these remasters are being made is because they're relatively cheap to make and they perform well sales wise.

Yes, first party has been slow, but that's an industry problem. Games are taking longer to develop and are costing more money. A typical AAA Sony game would now take longer than five years to make, and that's being generous. However, as stated this isn't a problem exclusive to Sony.

All the above has nothing to do with arrogance.

You would have a point if they stopped selling the base PS5 and made the pro the only console. You can still buy a base PS5.

They released the PS3 at $599 20 years ago. They tried to force the Cell processor and blu rays on everyone. They made a system impossible to develop for. They were the epitome of arrogance and get bashed hard by the competition.

You're, at best, describing incompetence
