Titanfall Review Thread

Why stop at 4 weeks, why not 4 months?

Because unless the game really is that poorly optimized or the servers poorly balanced 4 weeks should be enough time for it to be stable.

Put another way if after 4 weeks the online community view is that game isn't stable to experience then I won't be touching it until it is or skipping it entirely. As an online only game I expect an extremely solid experience and netcode or I'm not interested - it's not like there hasn't been exceptionally stable online only titles on PC since forever and if MS and Respawn are going to bang on about Azure and "the power of the cloud" then I expect them to deliver.

87 metacritic? That's a very good score.

And it will be regarded as such in hindsight.

The immediate backlash is not really against the game, it's more against those who decided this was the greatest thing to ever happen to the FPS genre, and belittled those who weren't entirely convinced of it based on shill hype and screenshots alone.

It might be an inaccurate score, however, if the actual launch doesn't work as well as it did in the review environment, but I have no doubt the metacritic score will correct itself if that's the case.

I'd have to watch the video to find out why he thinks it's a pile of crap, but I like the cinematics, and various other events that occur on maps that don't occur during standard matches. I'll admit that it's rather stupid that you can't affect the campaign's story in any way by defeating the opposing team, or losing to the opposing team, but I honestly didn't come in expecting much from the campaign.

And it's not just the improvement on graphics that benefits the PC version. It's the fact that you don't have to deal with the framerate drops or screen tearing from the console versions.

Also, I didn't expect TB to be one of the ones vouching for 720p (or relatively close) in the 1080p vs 720p debate.

The problem is what campaign is forced on you (in order to unlock the other two titans) and is a limited game-type and essentially worthless filler cutscenes...

Mission FAILED

Nah its ok though will give you a win for effort!

"It’s not just a single-player campaign that’s missing, it’s the ability to play the game alone or offline in any way. If something happens to your internet connection or to EA’s servers, Titanfall is simply unplayable, which seems inexcusable for a game with so much functioning AI." - Toronto Globe and Mail

I think this is a pretty good point. At least when Battlefield 4 was a hot mess for me on PS4 online I could dive into the single player. Would have been good to have a 'bots only' mode. Still I'll get it on PC when it's a bit cheaper.

Exactly. Titanfall will be a lot of fun, but I was annoyed how it was hyped up to no end and anyone who had any reservations or even realistic expectations were shit on.

Even after the beta, I felt like it was a solid 8/10 but nothing revolutionary. My concern is whether or not I'd find it fun to play a month from now since it tends to be another really easy game.

What is the reason PC reviews aren't live?
As much as I hate to say it, it's probably because critics aren't currently being paid to hype a version of the game that won't sell Microsoft's consoles.

Just take the score of the Xbone game, and increase it by however many points the reviewer took off for framerate and screen tearing issues.

WoW sucks. If my internet goes down, I cannot play anything! All that Raid A.I for nothing! *pushes over magazine rack*

Open the EGM review to check the review. The first thing I see is a big Titanfall banner-ad. Lost interest and didn't read it.
I already think that it's strange to review an online game and give it full marks, before it gets enough players.

From the Polygon Review:

If there are complaints to be had, I'd point to performance. Titanfall sits at 60 frames per second most of the time, but when three or four Titans are on the screen at once, firing rockets and arc blasts, things take a dive. It's never not playable, but it is noticeable.

Isn't this most of the time? In the Beta, there were 3-4 Titans on the screen for at least half of the game round. That is why we have that stupid AI, to farm the grunts so we can get into a Titan quicker, right?

Hopefully they can get this ironed out considering Last Titan Standing was one of the most enjoyable modes, but sounds to be the worst performing from the Giant Bomb review. And isn't the whole point of the game to get in your TItan and F shit up? It would suck for that to slow down performance every time more than 2 people get a Titan.

We will all find out tomorrow!

See the thing is, all this hype was really being promulgated and pushed by Microsoft. So, if anyone deserves the blame for this thing being sold as "God's gift to gaming", its them!

So PC version's getting a 90+ meta, right?

Justice!

First prediction: 5/5 from GiantBomb.

GiantBomb tends to rate good shooters fairly low, though.

And it will be regarded as such in hindsight.

Titanfall is the best thing to happen to shooters since FEAR, based on my time in the Beta.

FEAR is the greatest first person shooter ever made.

FEAR has a metascore of 88.

Metascores do not matter.

I am hugely geeked out for this game! That being said, I can completely understand some of the criticisms/concerns about it. The no offline/vs bots mode sucks for when the internet connection dumps. The presence of only 5 modes (though I will refrain from too much criticism until I play it tonight/tomorrow). Stuff like that is good to here about in these reviews. It makes me feel more confident that it is being looked at objectively. Hell, even the dude on IGN who has been smokin' the Respawn pole has some good criticisms. I feel like what is said in the reviews is far more important than the scores or what metacritic says (I wish there was something closer to RottenTomatoes for video games).

All that, I can't wait to call in my first Titan! Standing by for Titanfall!

That doesn't seem like something that could be concluded yet does it? And on the contrary, didn't some reviewers even say that could possibly be a knock on the game since it is limited in gamemodes compared to CoD?

I guess you take away from a review what is important to you. I'm personally more interested in core gameplay mechanics than game modes. If the mechanics are there for a good online shooter the mileage tends to follow. This paragraph from Edge also stuck in my mind:

Edge said:
There's a substantial amount to do across every map and mode, and in the course of ten hours' play we didn't find ourselves getting bored or seeing the same circumstances crop up enough to feel repetitive. Likewise, unlocks arrive at a refreshingly fast rate – your options are varied at the beginning, and diversify quickly.

The fact Titanfall has been played to death in its beta prior to its media runout also suggests any concerns of longevity should be obvious by now.

It will, but I think it being available on PC and 360 will hinder the impact it has on XB1 sales.

If I have a perfectly decent gaming PC, or my friends are still on XB360 (which a huge amount of people are), then there would be no reason for me or my friends to pick up an XB1 for this.

Titanfall will have some impact, no doubt, but Halo will be the one to really shift boxes.

Seems that way.

As I said before, I think most people who were interested in this game, bought the console already.

Especially given how much promotion and hype Microsoft had for this game in advance.

Yeah, but it's just your opinion that it's the best thing to happen to shooters since FEAR. That won't be the case for most people. For some, definitely - but not for the majority. You'll always find some people who love a game more than the average person does. It doesn't mean you discard what the consensus is.

87 for a FPS is good but hardly groundbreaking if anything people should compare it to the first modern warfare witch got a 94
