You can only play it solo. It's like the sims. You create the people and interact with them but you can't control them. They form relationships, friendships, and do whatever they please while you act as a watcher that can "push" them into directions. The fun of the game comes more from how they react to things and there are mini-games and activities you can play with the Miis. What made it better than The Sims for me is there feels to be more randomness in the interactions plus you provide actual voices for them rather than a random jabber langue.
This was a perk that Nintendo themselves have offered for the entirety of the 8 year generation, because they knew the consumer loses a lot with digital ownership.

i do, spider-man 2 was disappointing and God of War Ragnarok was also disappointing, they are fun games just like MP4 will be but all of them arent doing anything interesting, I'm not chomping at the bit for ghost of yotei either for exactly that reason.

Makes me think Nintendo will focus hard on Switch 2 this year. Still curious if any of the Switch 2 announcements are also for switch. We will see soon.
