I was going to wait for a Steam sale for Hollow Knight, but I might get it now instead. It's like a 20 hour game, but if you want do everything then up to 40 hours...

This video made me realize that James Avery, aka Uncle Phil / Shredder, has been dead since December 2013...which I completely missed at the time due to my own dad dying in the same year around the same far too young age...

...now I'm really sad...

A much belated RIP to this father / uncle figure to a generation.

I mean, this video was kind of pointless. He tries to have his cake and eat it too when he acknowledges that he lost focus in the video when he goes off on the Crash tangent. Also does the exact same thing with the tired trope of building a strawman from youtube comments to knock down. Also his scale doesn't make any sense, a 3/5 = 60% which is a shitty score. Uncharted 4 isn't a 3/5. What is the additional 40% additional improvements to be made to Uncharted 4? It doesn't exist. A very disjointed and convoluted video. 9/10

Yeah seriously the video actually just feels very poorly argued. It feels like he just took common complaints he saw other people make, rather than coming to these conclusions by himself after following the work of various game critics.

This is my issue with most youtubers. I can predict jim sterling's video content depending on the major gaf topic that week.

Dunkey kinda just slayed ign critics haha. Dang. Love that it randomly but seamlessly transitioned to a crash bandicoot review

I'm fairly certain the 'lost focus' part was completely intentional...
and his scale makes sense if you listen to what he says. 3/5 isn't 'shitty'. It is when when lock ourselves down to the gaming worlds 7-10 scale for everything, but when using an entire scale and understanding where he's coming from and what a 3/5 means to him, it fits.

It feels like it was unintentional, but that he noticed that he lost focus and tried to make it look like it was part of his point. Even though it didn't back up the point he was trying to make at all.

The loss of focus was intentional but not a very strong argument for his point. You're right about the UC4 part though it's a 2/5.

The regular discrepancy between numerical values and the actual text of the reviews is what finally clued me in to the fact that number reviews are meaningless bullshit.

I love his videos but I actually think that was garbage criticism.

"Decentralized criticism"...

You mean... web sites aren't intellectual monoliths? I mean, what even is a byline?

Are you fucking kidding me? I swear, only gamers have this much of a chip on their shoulder about reviews. No other fan base does this shit. Contrast this attitude with anything you see in OT about film criticism. It's not even bottom of the barrel it's underground.

The internet will bring up IGN's God Hand / Imagine Babyz review until the end of time.

Which is really funny, considering God Hand should be an example of what people claim to be asking for, in part: A spectrum of perspectives.

A reviewer stepped outside of the 7-10 range, but it didn't benefit a game you like, so it's bullshit. Just exposes how disingenuous these arguments are.

Watch the video again, he explains his scale.

3/5 = above average (literally).

I was riffing his joke on the NSMBU IGN review criticism/review score disconnect, joke fell flat though

The point I found most important about his video is the thing about getting an idea about your favorite reviewer's tastes. That's the only way reviews can be useful because, honestly, games are too subjective. If someone who hates JRPGs says a JRPG sucks, I won't take it under consideration because of course they'd say that. But if someone who prefers JRPGs also hates that game, then man maybe Arc Rise Fantasia is really a bad game. (It is)
