Would you consider Zelda the best franchise ever?

Along with metal Gear Solid, I do consider zelda the best franchise ever. The great thing about it is that its such a simple game that is really fun. Even though the main story is the same in each zelda (Ganondorf tries to get the triforce, kidnaps zelda etc) there are enough differences in each game to make each game unique. i dunno why, but even if I have completed OoT and WW loads of times, I never get bored of playing them because it is something that you can just sit and play without the hassle of difficult controls and a complicated story.

You could say that, even though Zelda has had it's share of fluff games, but I'm hoping the next one brings the series back to the greatness of A Link to the Past.

Metal Gear Solid isn't even close with its disappointing sequel.

Hmm, yes i would agree, zelda as a longspan franchise hasnt lost its magic, while the majority of 8bit classics that keep going on mostly have cult followings and their qualities havent been keeping up with other games.

Metal Gear Solid 1:The Twin Snakes and Metal Gear Solid 2 were just about perfect. Its probably the only series to be better than Zelda.

Speaking of disappointing sequels.......

Would you consider Zelda the best franchise ever?

Absolutely. Only series that really takes my breath away with every single release. The quality of Mario with more attachment to characters and the world.

I think all anti-Wind Waker arguments should be made with a picture of the game, just to remind me how intensely beautiful it was and thus bolster my support of it.

I vote Mario, by the way. If only because of the language of the question - best franchise ever versus best series of sequels ever. With a handful of exceptions, Super Mario Anything has turned out to be good, from RPGs to golf to racing. The Zelda world doesn't have that kind of versatility.

I dont see why everyone thinks that wind waker is a bad sequel. The graphics were fantastic, the characters were great and it had a just as epic ending as Ocarina of Time.

I want to ask a question about the wind waker so i will ask it in this thread instead of starting a new one

SPOILER: When ganondorf wished for hyrule to be dried up or whatever and let him have hyrule, would that mean that he would rule the world that link and tetra lived on, since the islands they live on were the mountaintops of hyrule?

Outside of 2, maybe 3 pieces, the music sucked. In fact I'd say it was the most disappointing thing about the game.

I enjoyed it overall, but there are so many parts which annoyed me. I'm not getting into them again.

And that's about all the game has
It doesn't have a fun, intuitive, unique fighting system? Ingenious boss battles? Stellar control? Great puzzle design?

There's room for intelligent criticism of what Wind Waker got wrong, but I'm not one to take Nintendo game design for granted. Other adventure games wish they could touch Wind Waker, warts and all.

Mario. I`d go with Mario.

A smart man....

While I love Zelda... and consider it to be my own personal favorite franchise.. I would have to say it is far from a household name... So if your question is how do I feel... then I would say Zelda is one of my top three.... if not the top..

but from a worldwide standpoint... Mario takes the cake

Mario is probably the best franchise of all time. Can't think of any way to put anything above that - and I didn't even like all of the mario games.

Mario, Zelda, Winning Eleven, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, GTA: all of them are double thumbs up franchises to me.

Considering how people's reaction to the Spaceworld demo and Wind Waker has litterally shaken mountains within Nintendo, I'd at least say it's one of the most powerful.

Zelda? Without a doubt.

I just got, yesterday, the Classic NES series original for the GBA. Plugged it in while in the crapper, heard the original title screen music, and got chills.

c'mon, someone answer my question:

SPOILER: When ganondorf wished for hyrule to be dried up or whatever and let him have hyrule, would that mean that he would rule the world that link and tetra lived on, since the islands they live on were the mountaintops of hyrule?

Zelda is definately my personal favorite.

Overall, Mario really cannot be beat--neither in sales or in recognition. Mario is at the top of an elite group of video game properties which could be considered cultural icons. Zelda can't compete with that.

It doesn't matter. If he attained Hyrule, through that powerbase, and with the Triforce under his domain, he'd have no problem ruling the entire world. He wants Hyrule, and for the first time, WW has given us his motivation for... everything, his desires, his ambitions.

Are you sure that the triforce would be under his domain. If he made the wish, the triforce would disappear, most likely to the sacred realm ). when the king made his wish, the triforce disappeared

No, not even close. There isnt enough to the games to warrant such an award.

Oh come on, there are 10 original games in the Zelda series (ignoring CDi Zeldas) and 2 to come, next year (even another in the works for DS), how many titles exactly do you think you need to qualify for a successful franchise?

MamaSmurf, he said enough to the games, not enough of them.

I agree with that sentiment, anyways. When I was 14 I played through LttP in a single game... ever since that I saw no point in playing the game again. I still don't, today.

For the sake of discussion, what would you considered to be the best then? Or do you think this is a stupid question?
It's slightly stupid since my answer isn't Zelda related and I don't think this thread's point is to turn it into a piss-fest by ranking Zeldas against other series.

But, for example, I'd be willing to put Sakura Taisen, Dragon Quest, Castlevania, Beatmania, and Thunder Force over Zelda, among others.
