What if they switched to white DVD boxes?
They should go just colorless clear. Like a criterion blu-ray or whatever.

I hope they use the smaller bluray size cases.

Now that might bother me... Xbox doesn't use blu-ray.

If you think about it, 360 and Wii using DVD sized cases makes perfect sense.

Eh, I just like the smaller cases. The big DVD size ones seem really clunky in comparison.

God dammit, stop rebranding shit halfway through the hardware's life cycle! (No matter if this is true or not for 360, my rage still stands.) Either actually pick decent packaging design from the start, or come to terms with what you have and stick with it.

It drives me crazy when I have games from the same library that don't look the same due to packaging changes. Yes, I know I'm anal about this. Shut up.

I'm still angry that Nintendo dropped the black box look for NES games. My Mario games don't match dammit!

It's a shitty name, but everything is pointing towards that. Garnet also hinted at it during this weeks Weekend Confirmed, where he talked about it being matte-black, slide-in harddrive and thin.
It's a good name, the "+" stands out for better so casuals will know what to get.
I mean, if you have 360 Arcade, Elite and slim, some would go for the Elite because it sounds the better deal.

Let's hope for some cutting edge 1st games to fit this rebrand.

It seems like they're just changing for the sake of it.

Which is something corporate America does very well. They do things like this for nothing all the time, every day. And the launch of a significant peripheral and possibly a slimmer SKU isn't nothing. I wouldn't be surprised.

They'll probably just put them in paper sleeves to "save the environment and costs"
That's also a good way to reduce game trade-ins.. knowing the typical westerners habits, those plastic cases are the only thing that end up preserving the disc...

Garnett lee won't know it was purely speculative on his part. But I hope they keep the 360 as is there's nothing wrong with it.

It's just marketing.

Do nothing and make the same money or less than you did before...

...or tweak cosmetics and possibly refresh sales?

What would you do?

I fully expect the natal games to have a design exactly the same, or maybe a color tweak with natal in place of xbox360.

They all look fugly. I wish they could just do away with the whole branding thing and maybe just put the small xbox circle thing somewhere on there. The new PS3 cases look much sleeker.

With a new Slim etc. I am sure all those SKUs would disappear. There'd just be the new SKUs.

The whole '+' rumour is very old. It's not actually part of this current cycle of info about the packaging. The packaging itself suggests the name will remain the same (although of course it could be changed before this stuff hits the shelves...but if that were the case, why throw out this new cover art now? Why not wait til you're ready to announce a changed name?)

^ Same.

I really expect to see Natal games with a different branding.. and these normal 360 games are probably being tweaked to match up with that alternate look.

Looks like they're mostly moving away from the rings and going to wavy lines. I wonder if they update the UI and bootup logo.

He probably has more insider knowledge then most people on gaf has. But the 360 needs to change, it's still noisy, big and could be prettier to look at. It's not ugly by any means, but there's a long way up to the Wii field of pretty design.

Exactly. I am still pissed they did this with ps3 games. All of them have the same sides besides the new games. Looks out of place. The spines for these new cases better match the older ones.

I agree with noisy.

But I also don't think the Wii is "pretty". It's simple. And also, 4 years down the line, even its look is a little stale in the mind of the public.

I would aspire to something more.

Logical move if they're actually going to release a 360 slim.
This, this, a thousand times this.

Sony redid the PS3 game packaging when the PS3 Slim came out, so there's precedence here.

They need to stop with this bullshit, really. How hard is it to come up with one design and stick with it throughout the generation? Jesus.

I gotta say they have grown on me. At first I didn't like it, but now... they are kinda iconic in its own right, even tho the layout is just like the 360.

I like the changes they did to the platinum games boxes, much better, but I see no reason to change the current xbox 360 box design, it works and looks nice.

Where's the Xbox Live label?

And for people saying that the new label is bigger -- it's not. Just look for the already made comparisons or compare it yourselves with boxarts of the same size. They're the same size.

If this is true, I'm going to be sad. Had to buy a new Xbox 360 last month because my old one RRODed just before Alan Wake's release date, and I would like to have a slim one.

Hopefully it's true, I think it's an improvement over their already fine box labeling. However, the new labels still say Xbox 360, that's not exactly rebranding.

Did Microsoft say they were doing a rebranding? I was under the impression it was a refresh/rejuvenization.

It looks ugly as hell, and I like the way the front is just fine right now. They better not change the spine, or it won't match up with my other 360 games.

Half way?

You do realize, that if this were any other generation. Xbox 720 would be released in November right?

People give too much credit to the PS3 Slim so call rebranding. NO. What really matter was price drop plus the lack of a real 360 drop thus making them both evenly price, and finally, making the "PS3 VALUE" argument actually work.

Thus, if Microsoft wants to be smart, rebranding Natal + Slim better be less than (at least $50 or prefer $100) Move + PS3. Doubtful, but getting price to be equal to Wii would be a real killer.

Looks fine. It's a box.

I guess it makes some sense for Microsoft rebrand or you could say "refresh' the brand with the Natals coming out and everything.

It must be tough for platform manufactures.... balancing the needs of making money... and having to worry about how game collections look on people's shelves.

If this is real it makes me think that they are NOT going with black as their new main SKU for whatever reasons, I don't think so anyway.

If "more" means more crazy curves or angles or fanciness, then lord no. I'm very much along the Apple way of thinking: make the hardware as un-obtrusive and "invisible" as possible. Create beautiful style via the materials you use and the "less is more" approach. The 360 was a huge step up from the original Xbox, which looks like a god-awful "l33t hacker" PC or something.

The Wii isn't outstanding, but I think it's the best design of the current crop. Video game systems needs to stop looking like video game systems. That doesn't mean they need to start looking like stereo components, but they need to stop looking like things you're embarrassed to have next to your TV. Current crop of consoles is probably the best in that regard, but we still have such a long way we could go.

Garnett has been saying there would be a redesign of 360 since Shane was on 1up yours.
