Xbox 360 packaging rebrand incoming?

Half way?

You do realize, that if this were any other generation. Xbox 720 would be released in November right?
Wave being a next-gen console instead of Natal confirmed?

Looks like shit.
I also agree that the green boxes need to go.
The green really tends to clash with the box art of many games.

It must be tough for platform manufactures.... balancing the needs of making money... and having to worry about how game collections look on people's shelves.

The solution would be to put games in a box, or not display them in the house. Then everybody wins.

The moment they announced Natal, they announced their next console. Natal is the next Xbox, and while it is not the typical new hardware box cycle, it will be treated as the next Microsoft home console.

To those saying this new design on the boxes is fake, I have seen at least one official box (direct from publisher -- can't say which right now, but you'll see it soon) that will feature this design. Additionally, as I mentioned in my story (at Destructoid.com), I've gotten word from a few other folks that designs have been altered to match this. But yeah, I thought it was a crap hoax at first, too.

So uh... Where will they put the Only On Xbox 360 sign?

If "more" means more crazy curves or angles or fanciness, then lord no. I'm very much along the Apple way of thinking: make the hardware as un-obtrusive and "invisible" as possible. Create beautiful style via the materials you use and the "less is more" approach. The 360 was a huge step up from the original Xbox, which looks like a god-awful "l33t hacker" PC or something.

The Wii isn't outstanding, but I think it's the best design of the current crop. Video game systems needs to stop looking like video game systems. That doesn't mean they need to start looking like stereo components, but they need to stop looking like things you're embarrassed to have next to your TV. Current crop of consoles is probably the best in that regard, but we still have such a long way we could go.
I definitely don't mean more garish and I agree with you about aspiring to simplicity.

And I loathed the Xbox 1 "turbo charged car amp" look.

But Wii is no longer a very fresh design. White plastic was very hip in the mid 2000s but I think it's no longer cutting edge. Even Apple has abandoned it.

Give me brushed steel :D

Brushed steel looks like ass. ;p

Oh yeah, if that's the direction you're talking about, I'm all for it. Nintendo just needs to figure things out for themselves, instead of doing what Apple was doing around the time Apple is set to go in a totally different direction. *heh*

Yeah it looks way better than that giant black brick.

Doesn't look too good but no one should be praising current 360 boxart either. Platinum hits games with the black look boss though.

It's just marketing.

Do nothing and make the same money or less than you did before...

...or tweak cosmetics and possibly refresh sales?

What would you do?

Yeah, I fully understand that. I'm just saying - don't be surprised that they would change just for the sake of it. Besides, it seems to me that they have a decent reason for it anyway with Natal on the way and console cycles lasting longer.

Mafia and Kane & Lynch hits on the same date, august 27th, so thats the earliest we can pin the re-brand/re-launch of the 360. (which is now presumably the 360+)

Also, the wave'ish design fits with the E3 invite:

Microsoft Wave confirmed then?

Wow nice find. "Wave" is starting to grow on me.

Xbox 1 was the ugliest console of all time. It matched the design of car amps or energy drinks... a kind of macho monster truck ideal of cool. Felt very 90s.

The design of the 360 actually sold me on the Xbox brand finally. That EXTREME GREEN GOO shit wasn't doing it for me.

If they're going to redo something, it should be the neon green boxes.

Not at all. The neon green boxes have personality. They stand out as "Xbox 360" the same way Blu-ray movies stand out. I love the design of the Xbox branding.

Eh, I think I like the old one better. I just hope they don't change the spine like Sony did with PS3 and Sega did with Dreamcast.

Jtwo said:
I hope they use the smaller bluray size cases.

Hell no. That will just look even sillier than a new spine on a shelf display.

Not liking those new headers. They need to pick a soild color background for it (green or silver would look good). The sharp contrast of white to green makes the art look choppy and ruins the flow (no flow; no wave?).

It could be worse. They could be using the original 360 platinum hits design of shrunken art pasted in the middle of the cover.

I don't like it.

Neither do I. Looks like ass. Thicker bars are them trying to shy away from "RRoDBOX3FIXME?" Seriously?

Eh? The green/white has worked fine for a few years now.

The Xbox 1 looks ugly as hell. So, yeah.

Whoa. Sure, the original Xbox was XBOX HUEG, but I still think it looks far, far better than the regular white 360 (it looks like something inbetween a melted lump of white plastic and a butt ugly toy made in Taiwan). The Elite looks pretty neat, though.

I like the current headers. The new one makes the art look incomplete.

I see the current one and I "get" the whole image.

I see the new one and my eyes dart around it trying to "clear" the eyesore.
I have no idea how to explain it better, I just don't like that new version

it looks cool, but it's really dumb to remove XBL logo.
Isn't it a little redundant to have? Is there any game that doesn't have the logo on it?

I think the new header, as a stand alone header vs header, looks better. When coupled with the actual game artwork on the other hand, it looks much worse. It distracts far too much IMO.

God, gamers really do hate change. How can you hate this? It's BARELY a change. OMG NO XBOX LIVE LOGO THAT SHIT WAS SO SLEEK AND STYLISH LIKE MY KMART CLOTHING. Everyone screams it's awful but in like a week everyone will get use to it and maybe even start liking it. The bars aren't even bigger, they just look bigger without the green stripe.

+1

Tell you the truth, barely notice any difference. As long as it says Xbox 360, same branding to me. And, who really looks at the freaking box art for longer than a few minutes any way.

I wonder if that Xbox 360 logo (with the silver globe) is temporary. Perhaps there'll be something different that works better with the new "wavy" branding.

Or, maybe the new cases work with the branding on the label or something.

Or, maybe, JUST MAYBE, this is the final design and its crap.

*shrug*

I think it looks nice enough, though it's honestly not a dramatic change overall even if the green is more dominant than before. I like the bolder strokes of color and cleaner-looking template that ditches the gradient use. Again, not a huge difference overall...just cleaner. If that's real, the X-globe's tone is also lighter in appearance.

I can't see the difference. Different header maybe but still using current xbox 360 HW Box designs.

It's not only gamers that hate change. Everytime ANYTHING changes, some people bitch and moan like it's the end of the world.

This. I don't get why people think there is going to be a 720 with extreme graphics and quad core processors. Natal is the next system, just like Revolution was the next system for Nintendo.

MS is going to copy those who are successful. When it was the Playstation that was kicking ass, they came out with their own bigger and badder version of it. But now the Playstation model isn't so good and the Wii model is kicking ass. And what is the Wii hardware? Basically a GameCube under the hood with totally different branding and control scheme.

Looking at this thread makes me wish IO would stop making this Kane and Lynch crap and make another Freedom Fighters...

In their defense, 2 looks pretty cool. And we will never see another Freedom Fighters. The rights to the game sits in a split between IOI and EA, and since they're owned by Eidos that will never happen.

I gotta agree that the original Xbox looked abit better. The 360 doesn't have much characteristics. The ring of light is probably the only one. In all other aspects, it just seems like a failed merge between something simplistic and hardcore.

Also, the first logo was cooler.

Yeeeeahhh!

I think the header is way to bright, I always have. That is the first thing I see, it really detracts from the actual boxart.

PS3 rebranding is sexy as hell, I wish 360 could make some compact blu-ray sized cases, the ones we have now seem so bulky now.

The Blu-ray case is green a la Hulk would be cool for 360 games, but it's too far into the gen for that sort of thing.

I'd expect the next Xbox will have green Blu-ray cases.

That would make my shelf cry. A lot.

I think the new box looks fine, but I'm not really a fan of all these mid generation reboots (NXE, slim rebrand, Natal). Kills the look of having a nice collection and the constant changes make it difficult for out of the loop consumers to recognize the product (Arcade, Elite, how many gigs now?).
